I was just wondering what people's opinions are of the work John Squire has released over the last 12 months or so.
I haven't seen him mentioned on here for a while and was wondering what people thought.
I personally loved the works at Smithfield, SW1 and Signal but not so much the Dazed and Confused.

They were still selling mind, mostly to ex-baggies-come-city boys and obviously the "celeb" buyers like Jamie Oliver.
I think he must have done 4 or 5 solo shows in London over the past 18 months. New work each time, so he is pretty prolific, but I'd rather seem him slow down and develop a coherent style of his own rather than continuing to knock up canvas upon sub-standard canvas, relying on his past glories to guarantee the sales.

John could write great songs and his solo albums clearly show that , BUT , he cant sing or write lyrics for toffee. He needed Ian Brown's lyrics to compliment his music.
Ian Brown did offer the olive branch but John was too proud after seeing the success of Ians first 2 solo albums and his complete flop of an album to go back to Ian and record as the band again

The Stone Roses were legendary and set the scene for all of Brit Pop they did some truly amazing gigs in the late 80's and early 90's I was lucky enough to see them an a few occasions and still maintain they are one of the best all timne bands
John's art is average, it certainly isn't street art as he to my knowledge has never done anything outside his studio. He should swallow his pride and stick to what he did best, writing great guitar riffs to Ian Browns lyrics.

Its great to see the influence of one my heros (Jasper Johns) onto another (John Squires). I remember presenting John's flag and map paintings to the back drop of Fools Gold, during an a-level art presentation back at 6th form in 1994. The Roses album covers screamed of American Abstractism and I loved them. To think I may have been cool once. Incidentally, Encaustic (wax and pigment) is a great material to work with, as is PVA with paint (a cheaper option).

A lot of works have gone unsold probably due to high prices and the current climate but maybe you have a point there jay1882, but I did think the work at the last show was the strongest yet.

Not too keen on his new wok but it has always been an ambition of mine to own one of his early Roses paintings. I dont think one has or will ever come up.

I remember a couple of people saying they loved the early stone roses work and wanted to buy one.
Just in case anyone was thinking of bidding on the one on eBay, don't, it isn't genuine. I think it was used as a live performance backdrop but it wasn't painted by John.
