DFace โข Fools Gold, What Wars are For, by reados on Jun 18, 2007 21:52:39 GMT 1, I really like the image and I'm a big fan o D*face's work but can anyone explain what the corporate logos have to do with the Campaign for Nucular Disarmament? As we all know the CND sign is... One of the most widely known symbols in the world, in Britain it is recognised as standing for nuclear disarmament โ and in particular as the logo of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND). In the United States and much of the rest of the world it is known more broadly as the peace symbol. It was designed in 1958 by Gerald Holtom, a professional designer and artist and a graduate of the Royal College of Arts. He showed his preliminary sketches to a small group of people in the Peace News office in North London and to the Direct Action Committee Against Nuclear War, one of several smaller organisations that came together to set up CND. First public appearance... The Direct Action Committee had already planned what was to be the first major anti-nuclear march, from London to Aldermaston, where British nuclear weapons were and still are manufactured. It was on that march, over the 1958 Easter weekend that the symbol first appeared in public. Five hundred cardboard lollipops on sticks were produced. Half were black on white and half white on green. Just as the churchโs liturgical colours change over Easter, so the colours were to change, โfrom Winter to Spring, from Death to Life.โ Black and white would be displayed on Good Friday and Saturday, green and white on Easter Sunday and Monday. The first badges were made by Eric Austin of Kensington CND using white clay with the symbol painted black. Again there was a conscious symbolism. They were distributed with a note explaining that in the event of a nuclear war, these fired pottery badges would be among the few human artifacts to survive the nuclear inferno. (These early ceramic badges can still be found and one, lent by CND, was included in the Imperial War Museumโs 1999/2000 exhibition From the Bomb to the Beatles) text from www.cnduk.org/INFORM~1/symbol.htm
very interesting point, i had not even noticed or even thought of that, this is the problem with d face , i love his work i like his images but they don't actually mean a great deal, but they do look good on the wall. i have mentioned on this forum before if he came up with some original ideas and put his quality workmanship into it, he would be one of the best artist on this forum.
im still a dface fan though.

DFace โข Fools Gold, What Wars are For, by speebe on Jun 18, 2007 22:57:17 GMT 1, Me too... big fan! but we mightbe kept waiting for the profound deep meaning element to his work. I have to admit that ive always enjoyed the way he goads the art establishment... Brian Sewell must just stand on the spot and spit out profanities when he sees work by D*face and others of his ilk.
His work is fairly immediate, technically well produced and a not so subtle nod and clowning grin to Andy Warhol and the Factory team, Jeff Koons etc churning out their own popular icons of contemporary culture... If only D's subject matter were more focused on our own contemporary culture.
I suppose that Kurt and Saddam is/was current... perhaps more work focused in this direction... although we don't really have celebraties with the same longevity anymore... unless they're deceased!?
Still looking forward to seeing the show on the 28th though!

All those companies have been involved in some sort of crap to do with the world at some point and generally taking over our lives causing unrest.

D*Face Hates were signed with a silver paint pen I think, same as Eine's Circus. Wish Banksy's Flag had been numbered on the front using one.
Think it looks beautiful. Definitely an anti corporation piece rather than pro.

DFace โข Fools Gold, What Wars are For, by finsburyparkranger on Jun 20, 2007 14:38:45 GMT 1, Nope. Don't like it. The peace symbol should have included every person and organisation that has been and is currently a really positive force for good. That would have been so, so much better. Currently its a twisted version of LV lovechild and unlike LV lovechild makes no sense to me. Dface fails again IMO.

Fair enough. We'll see in the long run - it may be the first of a few that he's got planned and maybe it will become clearer. Im definately going to be there to get one and i cant wait to get it framed.

DFace โข Fools Gold, What Wars are For, by slowmo on Jun 20, 2007 15:05:51 GMT 1, On the peace symbol front. The thing is, officially, Texaco, NASA, McDonalds, Nike etc have never directly started a war. In fact they are global brands, unifying and recognisable symbols the world over.
They all have positive branding around them, but scratch beneath the peaceful and unifying global image they are all keen to promote and you can see that it comes at a price.
Peace at what price?

This has nothing to do with them starting wars. thats really literal.
These are the things that have at some point or another triggered unrest.
Theres no point in over analysing it. I could over analyse alot of stuff and come to the conclusion that it means fuck all, i just like it. Alot of stuff we buy might not have any meaning, it is just part of a great collection.
Give it some love.
