Something Fishy Is Going On, by guest2 on Feb 6, 2008 2:17:31 GMT 1, I...... I just saw alot of rich folk bidding like crazy. Thats it! As simple as that. All the recent stuff in magazines and newspapers about urban art and the fact a major auction house has put on a show for 'urban art' solely has attracted a whole new crowd. People with lots of money like to buy from top auction houses as they feel safe. It's a night out to play and spend some money and get something in return. You won't find them here on ebay or anywhere else. Let Bonhams do your shopping for you

Something Fishy Is Going On, by wildbill on Feb 6, 2008 6:42:22 GMT 1, They sure have! Damien Hirst and his Cube posse are f**king masters at this. Damien was recently (and proven) to be part of an invest group that bid on his own piece for 100 million. At the end of the day, no one on here knows jack s**t about what goes on behind the scenes. Its our passion to collect art, but to say you know for sure what is going on is playground chat. If you had any insider knowledge you would be working for Laz or POW and would not be spending such a great deal of time on a message board. p.s what the hell have Blur got to do with anything? Oh, Crazy Beat! Brilliant! Mammal - Damien Alburn (Blur) owns approx 60% of POW thats what!!!
;D ;D ;D LOL ;D ;D ;D
spoken with true conviction!
Actually,
Christina Aguleria owns 39% , Michael Jackson owns 55%, and the tooth fairey owns 78%
....its a fact....look it up

You have the knowledge! Since when did this happen. It must have been an aggressive take over with Coxon. I bet they did Laz out of his share of POW by threatening to reform! Idiot!

Something Fishy Is Going On, by ABC on Feb 6, 2008 10:31:59 GMT 1, If someone has an investment in an artist, then they will bid on a few works by the same to keep interest and investment high, this is fact!! it states the same thing over and over again in most of the art books from the past and many best sellers of today. Hugh grant allegedly did the same running up to the sale of his Warhol print,I know the interest is higher now than when he bought it but think about why? I do agree that naming people without hard facts is a little wrong (I have done in the past too) Whats more a person can bid on anything legally as long as it's not their own piece that they have in the auction.
That reminds me, whens the next auction, at those prices I'm offloading all of my originals now, Ive waited five years for this point....Joke.

Something Fishy Is Going On, by goffy on Feb 6, 2008 12:40:31 GMT 1, Who cares how much was paid out at the last auction. It's not as if most of the people on here think 'oh I'll just pop out to Bonhams and see what I can pick up' In fact they will probably going around to their mates and say 'do you know that picture that I've got of a monkey's head in a space helmet, well the guy who did that had one of his paintings sell for 54k at auction' Even if these pieces were sold for half of that it would still be out of our price range. If rich people want to invest in artists that I have work by then good luck to them. If it makes them out of my price range then I will continue to do what I have always done, and that is buy what I like at prices I can afford.

Something Fishy Is Going On, by artstylee on Feb 6, 2008 15:41:53 GMT 1, nothing lasts forever. Should've appreciated it when you had it easier.
SH*t's expensive now. And it's not changing any time soon.
I'm a 25 year old who owns one POW/BRP/Laz related print (Nick Walker Hollywood TMA),
but My older investing bro who owns property and has a rich family said that he's been reading in Business Magazines/Newspaper that they're printing often that art is one of the best investments available right now.
These expensive auctions you speak of could be the publics reaction to "Hip Art", Everybody wants to be current and "Cool". So to be "cool/hip" and turn a profit is something that interests most, especially to those w/a disposable income. Dumping out money to have a nice piece for one of my many houses walls, and turn a handsome profit and appear "Current/Cool" in the process is a no brainer for all business men/women.
For me personally, I Just coudn't watch while all others buy up the good stuff. Nick Walker is building more of an atmosphere in his pieces, and creates images that more people can relate to. Breathtaking what he's able to achieve using traditinal stencil//street/graffitti methods, Better than the majority of BRP/POW/Laz artists body of work that I've seen. And that LA show sold out.
Might prove to hold more weight than anti Brit gov./anit big business stuff Banksy does in the future.
Futher the Skateboard/Surf/HipHop/Punkrockers that grew up in the 80's and 90's are Adults now who's industries have given them serious dough, all of these skateboarding/Surf/Punk/Skateboard/HipHoppers all have grown up and want art that represents the lifestyle they grew up around.
And this street art movement reflects, the power of the rootsy homespunn vibe of HipHop/Punk/Surf/Skate/Street styles.
United States Started street art, It took forever for the London/UK printmaking process to legitimize the artform on a worldstage We've been living around this style work on the streets anyways. It's like bringing streets to your walls. Bringing what's usually seen outdoors, indoors. Movement is strong.
Keith Haring and Warhol Originals are all in the Millions, Banksy, Hirst and Nick Walker are just as innovational. Don't be surprised if their work fetches similar prices 10-20 years from now.
