P.s. Whoever has just negged me for making a contribution and others probably, can we please hear the reason?

Pay pal nightmare!, by GD303uk on Jan 3, 2008 15:53:59 GMT 1, paypal are t**ts , they are always on the buyers side and their stupid rules allow money to be recalled 5 days after payment ( I think I rem correctly) with no reason needed, I have heard of people paying with paypal receiving confirmation of the item in the post then the buyer recalling their money, this is why a lot of eBay sellers send their items a week after the paypal payment, and with paypal having your card number they can still pull money out of your account even if you close you direct debit. I had a situation where I new I was being scammed and tried to prevent the money being taken back from my account, I could stop the bank but not the card, I am with Jam on this get the pliers out and light up that blow torch, hopefully when the buyer realises that they cant get away with it they will see sense, I would contact eBay and paypal and even the police this is fraud and a crime, Was the item insured and how was it sent, is it possible if the item is still in transit to recall it? The buyer could have got scared about the print not arriving and recalled the money, and might pay when it arrives, I hope this is the case, it probably is. Also what is the buyerโs feedback, if they have a lot of positive feedback it is unlikely they are scammers, I really hope it turns out all good.

Pay pal nightmare!, by ABC on Jan 3, 2008 16:13:21 GMT 1, Why are you guys giving him bad advice? Wait for the paypal process - are you kidding me? Burnz - YOU ARE GETTING SCAMMED BIG TIME. Do what you can to stop that shipment from arriving. He can just claim that an empty tube arrived and you have no way to argue against that. He'll end up with the money AND your print. Thats just paypal for you. You are currently getting toasted by the Paypal loophole in which allows scammers to do exactly what they did to you. Unfortunately, you did not take the necessary precautions for a large transaction like withdrawing the money to your bank account first and foremost...
Thats not totally accurate either, I know by experience, I lost ยฃ900 a few years back. Whether you withdraw your money from Paypal or not, It does not matter, Paypal will put your account into a negative if the balance is zero and someone has opened a dispute.(My balance was -ยฃ900 and I had to pay it back as I was not covered) What I did wrong was sent stuff to an Unconfirmed address, You on the other hand have not. I would just wait, but keep on top of it. You have sent it to a confirmed address and the parcel is Trackable, If someone signs for it in the US then the details can be passed to Paypal, don't panic yet Ive had this happen 5 or 6 times with my art.

Also, to add insult to injury, the other person's credit card company will charge Paypal a few quid for initiating / handling the chargeback and Paypal will deduct it from your account too.
If it all goes wrong, they won't refund their fees either (though Ebay do). Been stung myself ![>:(](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/angry.png)

Is GOOGLE checkout a viable alternative?

In order for them to recoup this sum, they make you set up a Direct Debit and BANG, access to your life.
Basically the worlds biggest con artists

Pay pal nightmare!, by craigf on Jan 3, 2008 23:21:44 GMT 1, Crap thread, feel v sorry for all the guys who have been burnt using Paypal. I've had a few bad experiences, but no where near this amount. I didn't realise about the 5 day withdrawl. I almost always pay cash and pick up to avoid any issues and think transfer or the same for sales if I decide to sell anything in the future over a few hundred quid
Hope there is a happy ending to this one

Pay pal nightmare!, by BunnyBoiler on Jan 3, 2008 23:31:19 GMT 1, So after the 5 days ... Can paypal get the money back from you if you have already transfered it in to your bank account? Do they actually take the money out of your account or credit card? If they saying you owe them - ยฃ1900 ... what would happen if you don't pay them back? anyone know? I thought you would be ok if you sent it to a confirmed verified address and had a tracking code or is that not the case anymore. ![:(](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/sad.png)

Yeah, I would be interested to know this too - I'm sure if it went all the way to court, you could win if you had all the information documented and were prepared to fight. I wonder if that has ever happened or if Paypal just hand it over to a debt collection agency or something.

The answer to your question, YES. I got paid ยฃ900 from a Verified user, BUT..... the verified user did not pay me..his account had been hacked and a stolen Credit card used. I sent the item, then credit card company basically told paypal it was a fraudulent payment and was going to claim the money back, Paypal takes the money from my account. Bingo, Paypal has their money back and I'm out of pocket, the scammer has the item delivered. That was 3/4 years ago, I still use paypal now but have rules. Only send to confirmed account that is varified...The confirmed address is important. Anything over 1.5k use Bank transfer.

Pay pal nightmare!, by Richard on Jan 5, 2008 21:04:56 GMT 1, People saying withdraw your money first do not know what they are talking about. When you sign up to PayPal hidden deep within there T&C is something that means they can take money out of your bank if there is 0p in your PayPal balance.
So, if someone pays you ยฃ1k and you withdraw it then they do a chargeback PayPal WILL take it from your bank account.
My advice is don't use PayPal for anything your aren't comfortable about losing. It is really too easy for scammers to exploit loopholes.

My husband had his paypal account hacked last year. Someone had used it to pay ยฃ680 for a laptop. Fortunately, my husband found out about it just 4 hours after the transaction had been made and he got his bank and paypal to sort it straight away. However, the bloke who was selling the laptop had already taken it down to the Post Office, and found himself out of pocket
So he decided to start emailing death threats to my husband, for having the nerve to stop a thief from stealing his money ![>:(](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/angry.png)

Pay pal nightmare!, by f5ers on Jan 7, 2008 10:17:35 GMT 1, I thought there was a 40 day window to file a claim. I bought a poster for $100 last year and it turned up damaged. I sent it back to the seller who said he would refund me then didn't. As it was a UK-US transaction that was past the 40 day window paypal wouldn't do a thing.
