Personally, I couldnt possibly comment on individual companies without understanding what they and what they are about. Maybe they are merely creating a collection and showing the work to a wider public, through time refreshing the collection... I think an outfit like ArtRepublic tends to take the piss with some of the prices, but at the same time they do add value (minimal I appreciate, with their framing, but it is a processed item to a certain degree), and given that that activity specifically is their business then they are also open to the odd shot in the arse when an investment goes awry. That said, I am not too sure how many of these are the "ones" that cause the problem... it is a tricky situation to analyse when the demand is an unknown, so fluid and pretty much unquantifiable!
I'm only really talking POW releases and specifically really Banksy (when I mention the altruism), as I am aware it is only really him that has announced he tries to keep the print prices down in order to allow them to actually be bought by the people that will put them on their walls.
Kinda like the Live8 ticket kerfuffle, either you are someone that didnt like the "run-around" or you are someone that didnt mind the profiteering.

PEOPLE WHO FLIP, by jamesreeve5 on Dec 13, 2007 2:21:52 GMT 1, looking at the boards though I can only question if there really are 24 legitimate galleries and presses pertaining to street art in London... I am not saying we demonize our own here, but rather accept everybody as they are.

PEOPLE WHO FLIP, by leehambly on Dec 13, 2007 2:22:23 GMT 1, you know what i started to read that then got bored after the first line. Im not being serious. Where did you get your humour transplant from? They did a really good job. No i dont do maths or economics - they are f**king boring subjects. I get paid for designing stuff. nice. My repayments are now ยฃ100 a month and that only just covers the interest (about ยฃ45 from that pays the actual loan).
Don't do irony either... or maybe our definitions of "only just" differ? ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png)
Its a fairly considered, pointed and directed rant to be able to 'bout face on with a "I'm not being serious".

PEOPLE WHO FLIP, by Avian Security on Dec 13, 2007 2:26:35 GMT 1, 25: Drug dealers Unless you count "bagging it up" as processing/adding value.
Not sure if many of you are aware of the amount of drug money that gets laundered by the art market. It's very simple. Go to an opening with several grand in cash, buy some art, sell it a few months down the line in an auction/on Ebay. Hey presto! Clean money. Yes that's right boys, those dodgy-looking types with shopping bags full of cash who come to private views, probably got that money selling crack.

PEOPLE WHO FLIP, by leehambly on Dec 13, 2007 2:30:06 GMT 1, The commerce of art, in its very self, is one of the last signifiers of decadence really... practically useless items being traded... whether it is for money, food, hunting rights, berries, whatever... so it kinda comes with the territory, but what gets my goat about it is the inevitable march by those artists that do sell there work for reduced rates towards no longer selling at reduced rates since the buying market is so flooded with profiteering. It is inevitable and there is scant little to be done about it, on the whole, but any little I can do (which is mighty, mighty little) I will do... likewise, to be fair, someone on here has a tagline along the lines of: I may not like what you have to say, but I will fight for your right to say it. I would have to agree along similar vis-a-vis flipping, I may not like that an individual flips a print, BUT I would still fight for their right to act as they please... don't expect me to be quiet about it though.

PEOPLE WHO FLIP, by bullet on Dec 13, 2007 2:34:31 GMT 1, err. think i got that.
Also people that feel compelled to say i had to sell it to get my mums dogs cats budgees new leg are a bit strange.
I feel for them in a way (and their budgees). This is the only place where you need to make up an excuse for some reason. You would not say 'im selling my car as she does not fit in the garage very well' Who cares, if you want to sell it i dont care if you spend it all on hookers and pringles. Infact thats the next thing ill do. When i sell something next im going to state that its for hookers and pringles. Maybe the pringles first to get some energy.

Er... didn't you cite some unspecified, important personal reasons when flipping selling all your D*Face stuff?

Now green pringles and hookers is the best reason ive heard all year. I would salute that person.

PEOPLE WHO FLIP, by spanksy on Dec 13, 2007 2:44:58 GMT 1, rep the designers on this thread! flipping is a means to an end. you flip to make money to by a better print you really want. its a cycle. i defy anyone to say they have never flipped to make a cheeky. buck.
an excuse i tend too use is that im fed up of getting paper cuts from trying to roll out the prints and frame them. bloody paper cuts!

PEOPLE WHO FLIP, by Avian Security on Dec 13, 2007 2:46:07 GMT 1, I'm flipping selling a Kant Komplain on Ebay at the moment. The reason I give is that it isn't chick-friendly enough. However I now see that I can use the profits to procure a naked lapdance, thus solving all my problems. Thanks guyz!!11! and thanks D*Face!

totally agree about that one regardless of what it may be they have to sell... think it is partially a British thing, the excuses that is, not the hookers and pringles... ok, maybe that too!
Basically it comes down to this: I don't think we are now far away from a ยฃ500 unsigned and a ยฃ1000 signed print release from the big man, and at that point it will be the same old, same old establishment only with any of these. And even these prices are below the market rate, he could probably push it to ยฃ1000 u/s and ยฃ2000 signed and still sell out in hours rather than seconds! Good on him though, it is him (through all of us) that has put himself in that position. He is partly to blame for the price increase, after all he is fairly good(!)... but the fever pitch surronding the release of, say, trolleys whipped up by instant re-releases on to eBay, imho, is at least equally if not more to blame.

People should just embrace the whole concept. Everyone does it and everyone who does not do it wishes they did it. Its never going to go away and you cant stop it. Im not endorsing it as i know its annoying when you miss out. My answer to that is diddums. Be quicker. Snooze you lose.
