Indeed they do, its generally to a trusted few who will spread the word through other trusted people, to allow fans to get pieces before the flippers pitch in with both feet, and as a system I think it works pretty well, its not always sucessfull, but it can help. Its similar to your comment on the Dolk thread where you mentioned you wanted to keep the dolk release quite for a while to allow fans to get some of the prints.
It works for the galleries as they get a wee bit of cudos, it works for the fans to a certain extent, as if they get a heads up with a certain time and date, they can at least be waiting. How galleries choose who to tell is always interesting, alot of the time it goes on previous sales, ammount ( both physical and finacial) of sales and general interest, some times its just mates letting mates know.
I really dont think the galleries are wanting you to leak ( ahem) info to the 10,000 members here, as there isnt any real problem for most print sales, they may be giving you a nod, for the forum thing.
One way to see is leek the next 5 heads ups you get and if you never get another one again, then maybe they didnt want things leeked
Or keep things as they are, where the fans still have some chance.....

I get emails from galleries telling me about releases but I don't think I've had any "don't tell anyone else" ones. From my experience, the more "secret" a release is, the more it gets flipped - See Ian Francis 2nd BMG release and Choe's Driving Home for examples...

IMO its best to either tell everyone or tell no-one. That way everyone gets a fair chance.

I've been told that this is definitely going on, and to be honest, i'm seeing it all the time in my day job in the internet too, viral and buzz marketing is where it's at. Facebook may have just screwed up with their 'beacon' application, but they were going along the right lines.

Annoying though, cos i've now decided to start writing a blog on bristol graf, and am having to ask people each and every time if they mind me mentioning what's going on. Generally they say yes, but there have already been a couple of no's that have slightly surprised me, not relating to illegal street graf (which would be understandable) but just straight gallery shows. Fair enough though, their choice, but know i'm accidentally going to put my foot it in someday in an unwitting way.

i just hope i get involved in this little knowledge loop at some stage! Can't afford to keep buying stuff off ebay second time out!

As Stuey stated, most collectors get emails, PM, Calls etc etc when something is going to be released at a gallery, I also presume most get preview invites on the back of purchases made from the inviting galleries.
As far as I'm concerned the procedure is kept like that for a good reason.
