Lurkers, by blacksy on Sept 20, 2007 8:31:27 GMT 1, From all the people i spoke to in the queue outside Laz yesterday it seems alot of people know about the forum, but don't confess to using it. I must have had chats with at least 8 people about it, and everyone of them knew about the forum, but played dumb, no one said - hey im "user123" or anything similar - something which got me thinking.
In short - these people are merely earwigging conversations, and gaining their vast knowledge in the art market - no different to the man who wrote down everything he heard being discussed yesterday.
I am 100% sure that at least 70% of these flippers only heard of Micallef through this particular forum - yes the BANKSY forum. Meaning, that between us - we have created these monsters, ok well maybe not created, but we have educated them.
Your thoughts please...........................

Lurkers, by Adamski on Sept 20, 2007 8:39:03 GMT 1, To be fair, I only heard about Micallef through this forum, along with a number of other artists, that shouldn't make me any less worthy to own a piece of his work.
This forum is a great place for art lovers and artists alike. It gives the artists an arena to reach alot of people who they might not otherwise reach.
I say share the love, this forum has opened up a whole world of affordable art which I've been looking for for a long time.

Lurkers, by tokyojeff on Sept 20, 2007 8:44:45 GMT 1, Unfortunately it's the nature of the beast, isn't it. We were all new to art at sometime and have come together to disuss, share and find new and exciting art and artists. There really isn't any way to block them out, as that would be outright censorship. Thankfully we all live in the free world (well for the most part) with our own free will. Yeah it just eats me up that all those flippers ' stole ' what we the art lovers wanted for ourselves to enjoy and NOT to make a quick buck on. I'd like to think we could do something about it but then aren't we just going DOWN to their level ?

Lurkers, by paulah on Sept 20, 2007 9:46:15 GMT 1, Not all lurkers are flippers! I was reading the forum for AGES before I plucked up the courage to make my first post. Just thought everyone was so knowlegable and I didn't have anything interesting to add...
This forum is friendlier to new people than a lot of other ones however - so go on lurkers! The first post is hard - and after that it's a doddle.
(I still don't have anything interesting to add but it doesn't stop me posting any more!)

because most of those prints were probably bought before the forum existed ?
if you were into banksy enough to get those prints early on then surely you're already fairly clued up as to whats good, available and when
...just a thought

Lurkers, by Jef Aerosol on Sept 20, 2007 16:14:03 GMT 1, Maybe I can add a few thoughts... I'm very new to this forum. Have only known about the existence of those forums for 2 or 3 weeks... And Silky started the Jef Aerosol only a week or so ago... I'm one of the first stencillers in France (started in 1982, at about the same period as Blek whom I've known since 84, if i remember well) and so I've been a street artist for 25 years, also exhibiting my works in galleries, group shows, festivals, and other events... I've only known Banksy for a couple of years... I've ben into art since always, have lots of street artists among my good friends (Miss tic, Jérôme Mesnager, Speedy Graphito, etc...) and had never never heard of that Micaleff guy until last week !!! I pasted my "old lady" stencil at the bottom of the Vandalism wall last july when i spent 3 days in london, and didn't know who had made that painting. When I posted it on flickr, someone told me "you trying to steal Eine's fame" ! Eine ? ? ? I had to type that name on google and found out about the man ! (i love his work, by the way !) The only mails I get comparing my stencils to Banksy's come from British people, nobody here would... Here, they've seen my works on the street since the early 80s and have never seen any Banksy's here in Paris or anywhere in France ! Or they just don't know who he is and what he does ! I don't know if Banksy has ever done anything over here, but I've never seen anything by him in Paris or anywhere else. And I'm extremely surprised at that "print craze" this forum seems to be all about ! Actually, there's nothing like this here in France where most people have never heard of all those "street artists" who seem to be stars for you ! The name of Banksy doesn't ring many bells here , even in the ranks of street art aficionados ! I sell canvases and people have been following my work for years as well as other French street artists' works but they don't buy many prints ! We don't have many prints here... People tend to buy canvases in exhibitions or only take photos of street art when they can't afford buying artworks... It's strange how most posts on this forum deal with money and speculation and collecting as many prints as possible instead of talking and exchanging about art... I'm not judging at all but wanted to express my surprise. I'm very happy to start selling originals and prints to you guys, and I'm really looking forward to exhibiting my works in the UK and releasing more prints, but I don't really know what to think about all that crazy business that's going on around prints ! Might not be very healthy... So, my conclusion is : enjoy art, be moved, walk and hang around and enjoy street art in the city, take photos, go to the shows and buy WHAT YOU LIKE ! There's no point in spending money on a piece you haven't fallen in love with ! I'd so much prefer selling a piece at a low price to someone who really wants and likes it than selling at high prices to people who only think of speculation, whether my fame will grow or not, what price they migh re-sell the painting, etc... Mind you, I enjoy selling my works and appreciate that people buy my stuff, but I believe prices have to be "correct"... Maybe I won't say the same thing in a while if my prices get crazy (don't think I really want that !) : I'm 50 years old and what I expect from my art is that it touches people, makes them happy or at least makes them react, and of course allows me to make a bit of money... But making money certainly isn't what you think of when you start working on the street !!! At least it wasn't what we were thinking of in those early days of stencilling, way back in the early 80s... One last thing : Please don't stop buying my works because of this post !!! lol ! And thanks a lot to the forum members who have already commissioned or bought paintings from me ! And thank you Mister Silky for everything ! In spite of all I've just said, I enjoy being here with you, not hiding, in the same way I've shared with the people on the walls and galleries for 25 years... peace Jef

Lurkers, by GVD on Sept 20, 2007 16:36:20 GMT 1, Hey Jef,
I think its great that a big street artist like you posts frequently on the forum. You don't see somehing like that often. And I agree, too much money talk.
Here in holland absolutely nobody knows Banksy, let alone other big stencil artists. (and I first read about you in a promotion magazine for renault some months ago).
You should do some stencils in the netherlands . I would love that.

Lurkers, by Daniel Silk on Sept 20, 2007 16:47:51 GMT 1, Great post Jef spot on! ;D
This is a funny ole world, who knows what will happen in the future
So my aim is to not confine people by saying this is a Banksy forum and you cant talk about anything else but That would be wrong, and not forward thinking I also think Artists and Galleries should be able to get along together on here, and all the forums ;D I know some don't want to play ball and I cant really help that, but for any Artist or Gallery that wants to constructively join in they are very welcome ;D I hope to level the playing field, and give everyone a chance ;D for the good of everyone! ;D

Jef - it's really interesting to hear your perspective on all this print madness, which is a million miles away from what street art is really all about. Hearing it from someone removed from this part of the UK scene, and who has 20+ years of street work under their belt, really hits it all home.
I hope you realise that what brought a lot of people to this board (I'd like to say all, but I'm not sure that that would be true) is a real love for street art and not an obssession for prints and money. These last few days really don't reflect well on the board and shouldn't be taken as representative of what this scene is all about. Though there is of course that element. If you want some really positive examples, take a look at the amazing event Nu organised in Norway, which included many of the artists regularly discussed here, or the threads containing Banksy's street works or those of Blu, Eine, Sweet toof/cyclops and some of the other artists often discussed here who are really kicking it on the streets at the moment.
By the way, have you been down to check out the SEEN exhibition which is on in Paris at the moment (I'm guessing he's one graff artist you will be familiar with , albeit not a british one )?

By the way, have you been down to check out the SEEN exhibition which is on in Paris at the moment (I'm guessing he's one graff artist you will be familiar with , albeit not a british one )?

Lurkers, by lesbianwednesdays on Sept 20, 2007 16:51:44 GMT 1, i found it a bit odd as well... i was pratically screaming my screen name on line looking to meet other people and didnt get much from anyone... did anyone notice the very first guy on line? with the dreadlocks? i asked him if he was on the forum and he said no... when i asked if he would mind telling me what was in his collection he didnt hesitate to say "a signed laugh now, flying copper, cnd soldiers and a happy chopper" i forget the other. either way it sounded like a small fortune worth... how could u not be on the forum if ur that into it?
his name was will, seemed like a nice lad, when i spoke to him the night before he told me he was aware of the forum but didn't get on here. i didn't dwell on it, not sure if he meant he had an account but didn't log on or wasn't even a member , no matter he's doing just fine without this place, wicked collection too.

Lurkers, by Jef Aerosol on Sept 20, 2007 16:57:44 GMT 1, I have to add something to avoid all confusion or misunderstanding : I do LOVE Banksy's work ! I sometimes feel puzzled when people seem to believe he's the "inventor" of stencil art / street art, but I really think he has amazing talent... I've also very recently discovered new names thanks to this very forum : D-Face, Nick Walker, Faile, Beejoir etc ... Many of them are very interesting. Thru Myspace, I got to know Logan Hicks, Kgnee, Peat, etc... and I love their work... I met Charles (Pure Evil) once in Paris in 2004 during the Stencil Project Festival and I like his enthusiasm about everything and his talents in lots of different directions... And I got to discover Blu only a few days ago, and what he does is stunningly good ! In fact, I love discovering new people, new artists... We all have a lot to learn from each other, no matter how long we've been "on the scene"...

Lurkers, by Jef Aerosol on Sept 20, 2007 17:17:06 GMT 1, By the way, have you been down to check out the SEEN exhibition which is on in Paris at the moment (I'm guessing he's one graff artist you will be familiar with , albeit not a british one )? Nope, not yet... Maybe I'll go, just to see what his pieces look like, but i have to confess that I've never been into that type of graffiti much (even if some pieces are so impressive and skillfully done). And I'm not at all into hip hop, rap, tag, etc... It's a different planet, I guess. When I started stencilling, there was no tag or graf or rap here yet... As far as music and culture are concerned, those who have my book know that I'm much more into rock (psychedelic, garage, punk, sixties, folkrock, etc...) and pop, folk, blues, traditional, etc...

Funnily enough, I'm much more into rock (psychedelic, garage, punk, sixties, folkrock, etc...) and pop, folk, blues, traditional, etc than hip hop culture too. Though am a fan of Old Skool graff and SEEN really is the Godfather in that respect. It definitely looks like an interesting exhibition, particularly as he's done a few street pieces in and around Paris since he's been there. It's also interesting how prolific old school graff and tagging has become in Paris. Far more so than in London from what I could see on my last visit. Turning back to the rock, folk, blues, etc. I've seen that you've done stencils of a fair number of music legends. Have you done any of Nick Drake per chance? I have to admit I haven't had a full browse through your site yet. Though have seen a fair few of your pieces around London over the years.

thanks for the link to that video !
Artist: Lambchop Album: Nixon Year: 2000 Title: Up With People Print Correct
Yes there comes a booming sound It used to come from underground Now it emenates From a kind of welfare state Of the soul Yeah baby of the soul
And of the sweet sweet soul Let's be certain Of the deliberate monologue As sure as if it will fall Across you Unto you Will most certainly leave the doing undone
Come on undone
And we are doing And we are screwing Up our lives today What's that we chanted It's this we planted C'mon progeny

Lurkers, by Harveyn on Sept 20, 2007 18:11:46 GMT 1, Top posts Jef...... ;D ;D ;D ;D Can't wait to get my commissioned piece from you.
I have loved art from a very young age and this forum has not only reignited my passion to buy art but also to view art and take up the brush again.
I absolutely love this forum and by all accounts spend way to much time reading everybody's thoughts on art. But it is compulsive reading.
I have discovered so many new artists from forum members and I have managed to buy art from members that I simply would not have come across.
Case in point Pietro Psaier whom I was relatively uneducated about but managed to buy from a fellow member.
