Love and Hate, by pezlow on Sept 7, 2007 16:44:47 GMT 1, Been thinking a lot about this but there does seem to be a bit of a homogeneity of taste on this board and that puzzles me a bit.
Does everyone on here like Micallef for example? Does everyone like Neate? It just seems that whenever a new release pops up there is an almost universal (some notable exceptions!) flood of people buying it all up. Can we all really like exactly the same things???
So I'm going to say something that it is going to make me both unpopular and get negged a lot. There are a lot of artists discussed on this board that I just don't like and I just don't get. And 2 of them are 2 of the biggest names in the movement. There I've said it. What does everyone else think?

Love and Hate, by Michael Jacob on Sept 7, 2007 16:55:22 GMT 1, Well said. Im not a big Neate fan. I think his style if very nice, but very "mainstream." His work looks great, but it doesnt speak to me like Banksy or Micallef. Does that make sense? There have been alot of great art, but when I sit back and look at it, I say "that is some really great art." When I look at Banksy or Micallef, I see they are trying to say something with their art, and i get it!

Love and Hate, by dave313perry on Sept 7, 2007 17:01:41 GMT 1, nicely put, no neggin please!!!!
i do feel there is a sence of sheepism! (no its probably not a real word!)
there are alot of ameteur collectors who have been grabbed by the gonads by the art scene after seeing the rising star of Banksy,me included! and there are a few quite influential characters on this forum who, if they like an artist, soon have a few people taking note and following suite!
Dont get me wrong, when i first saw adam neate i thought what the fuck!! but i did a little research, asked a few opinions and after his recent show...WOW!! so to me it seemed like i missed the potential that others on the forum already saw before his show - so if somebody says its good i try not to write it off before iv given it careful consideration and try and learn from other members!
But back to the main point - im a little cynical and feel there are alot more people on here that a driven firstly by money and potential profit than their love of art - im obviously not branding anybody inparticular but its just the sense i get due to many factors....thoughts please!!

Love and Hate, by Strange Al on Sept 7, 2007 17:23:34 GMT 1, Been thinking a lot about this but there does seem to be a bit of a homogeneity of taste on this board and that puzzles me a bit. It just seems that whenever a new release pops up there is an almost universal (some notable exceptions!) flood of people buying it all up. Can we all really like exactly the same things??? And 2 of them are 2 of the biggest names in the movement. There I've said it. What does everyone else think?
I completely agree that there is a fairly high degree of homogeneity displayed on the board, though don't find that all too surprising. There's undoubtedly a bit of a herd mentality on the forum which influences purchases. And I have no doubt some people are purchasing works which they have no real emotional or aesthetic connection to. The kudos that comes with owning certain pieces and the avid collector mentality, which we all share, are big draws in themselves. Save to mention the chance to make a fast buck on the next big thing. However, I think (or at least hope) that the people that buy for these reasons alone are a small minority.
I think it's worth remembering that people have joined this forum because of their love for one artist, Banksy. When you think about it, most of the other artists discussed on this board display elements in their works which are common to those found in Banksy's work. Whether that be style, narrative, method of execution, etc etc.
Take Micallef as an example (I think he's one of the artists you don't particularly like). Mic's chosen medium, style and execution are obviously completely different to that of Mr B, though his use of iconography and the narrative of his works often draw on the same or similar themes.
Admittedly certain artists don't share this immediate connection. Though I would argue those artists are only a step or two further away, i.e., Banksy shares elements with Micallef, Micallef shares elements with Ian Francis, etc. Call it "6 degrees of separation" or the "Kevin Bacon game" (or should that be "Francis Bacon" game in this instance?). Therefore if you like Banksy and Mic, you may well end up being drawn to an Ian Francis. Even if only because something about it resonates or is familiar.
I for one am more than happy to say that I don't like every artist discussed on this board. Though I generally don't get involved in the discussions about them when they come up. David Choe's City Girl prints, for example, do very little for me. I appreciate that he's a talented artist and can see why people like the prints. However I don't connect with them. Some of his sculptures and original paintings on the other hand I do like.
I commented yesterday on how great I thought Artpartment's collection is, which he posted in the Get Your Banksy's Out thread. It's refreshing to see something so different and unique on the board. Check it out. You may not like it, but you won't be able to deny that it's interesting!

Love and Hate, by chrisps303 on Sept 7, 2007 18:01:23 GMT 1, Oh well here goes please be gentle im useless at getting my point across. I'm not a fan of neate or micallef, it just dosnt grab me or have any real affect on me. Its neither love nor hate i just don't get it particularly the micallef stuff. I prefer things with a message or meaning. I'm not saying micallef or neate dont have a message in there art its just that i dont see it. Im still quite new to his whole art collecting business and it was banksy that lead me into it but i find it hard to say what it is about images that appeals to me. Im not really a follower of any particular artist or any particular type of art i just buy the images i like. Bit of a ramble and i dont really know if i am explaining my self very well which is probably why i tend to not get involved in debates about art.

Love and Hate, by manchestermike on Sept 7, 2007 18:23:35 GMT 1, Tastes change I think, and develop. For example Banksy: I was a big fan a year or so ago, but now not so much. A lot of the old images I loved I don't any more, hence selling a fair few of my pieces. I never thought I'd sell my Grin Reaper, but seeing it on the wall was doing nothing for me, so it went, to be replaced with what is doing it for me now. That said I think Morons and Trolley Hunters are two of his best works yet and I really hope I get one of the Trolley Hunters prints when it is released.
Right now I think Neate, Micallef and Matt Small are three of the best artists around (as I know many people on here do) - it's work I can look at for hours when more and more work is provoking a "so what" reaction. I think there is some sense of the herd mentality (a lot of which has to do with the profits people make on the work).
Some work, well more and more, is leaving me cold, but I'm quite happy a lot of work I really like hangs about for a while (Matt Small, Logan Hicks, Conor Harrington).
I still think a lot of people are buying a lot of artists as they are new to art buying and are developing their tastes... I fell into that trap and bought a lot of work for fear of missing something I thought I'd love. Now my tastes are more developed I'm much more selective, infact I only have two prints on my shopping list at the moment, Neate's Come On and Conor Harrington's Where the Sun Does Shine. I'm quite happy to sit and let everyone else snap up (with no disrespect to these artists) Blek, Insect, Pure Evil, Sickboy, Nick Walker, Hewlett, Dolk, Static and Hutch (to name a few of the forums )... I just hope I can get a chance with who I like... although I imagine it'll be a secondary market job for any of the LA Micallef prints I like.
Ramble over (for now)

Love and Hate, by stuey09 on Sept 7, 2007 18:32:37 GMT 1, I think it is very much down to developing tastes. Whereas I would once stick to PoW and one or two other sites when it came to buying art, I now don't have enough hours in the day to check everything out. Lots of US sites in particular have an amazing array of diverse art that I would love to own.
So it is great that we don't all like the same art, and even better when we share new artists which broaden horizens even further. It's what makes the place exciting

Love and Hate, by RBK on Sept 7, 2007 18:42:31 GMT 1, Great thread...
Agree this forum is biased towards certain artists and movements since it was a love of Banksy's work that brought us all to join.
There is definitely a sheep-like manner of many on this forum. I think the most imporant question that need to be asked is... Am I buying into a certain artist because I really just like the image and don't care whatsoever about value (i.e. I still love my Eelus - Shat-at & Wotulookin-at) or is there an underlying thought (whether it be big or small) of future investment in buying a work?
If investment enters into part of your equation at all, I ask people to think of what artists will survive the test of time and not be forgotten. Everyone and their momma is a street/stencil artist these days. Ask yourself whose work in 10 years time will not be forgotten, let alone who is still producing art?
Lastly, not sure about you all - but 'street/stencil/graffiti' art is only a portion of my collection. I have works by much more traditional artists - but don't really discuss/share this on this forum as the majority don't seem to also be into other genres.

Love and Hate, by Daniel Silk on Sept 7, 2007 18:47:40 GMT 1, Yeah, about a year back most people were only buying from POW, but they seem to have lost the plot a bit sorry! So loads of other Artists and Galleries have appeared, and that can only be good for everyone ;D I dont think its ever going to be easy on a forum where we have so many different styles and tastes, so thats why we now have separate forums for most of the Artists. For those of you that use the D*Face, Faile and whatever forums, I think its clear to see that they are all very relaxed and friendly ;D

Love and Hate, by ab on Sept 7, 2007 18:56:48 GMT 1, i think there is a sheep mentality on this board to a certain degree but its understandable i lot of people get caught up in hype and theres a LOT of it on here it only takes a few people raving about an artist for another few dozen people who have a passing fondness for that artist to feel encouraged and buy more...then people with no interest in that artist feel perhaps they should buy now in case they get into it later and cant afford it....then those who buy purely for flipping see people buying a certain artist and think theres money to be made.... and some people just buy everything in the hope that artist become the next banksy and they can put the cash in the bank and the kudos in their swollen heads...
but there are a lot of artists discussed on here i dont like...as i am sure is the case with a lot of people...people shouldnt be afraid to speak their mind...and pezlow i cant help notice you dont mention the artists you dislike by name ! step up and speak out...its not being rude...its just stating an opinion....
for me dan baldwin looks like wrapping paper....conor harrington (off the street) looks like something from an 80s barber shop window....beejoir put out a fantastic first print and hasnt produced anything i feel is nearly as good since...pure evil looks like topshop doing punk.....chloe early, mcattee, parla....dont like any of it....
neg away baby

Yep! ;D We aint never all gonna like the same stuff but we are all introduced to new pieces and new Artists that we might never have come across before, so its just a matter of take ya pick ;D

Love and Hate, by a4mnt on Sept 7, 2007 19:10:33 GMT 1, I was having a similar conversation with Organics on Monday.
In a space of 8 months my tastes and learning curve have changed/matured/increased etc. I can pretty much leave all the UK stencil art stuff, all the artists MMike listed. Bought a Hutch (no laughing Mike) and as much as I like it, I won't be hanging it, mainly because it doesn't fit in with the style of art i'm collecting now.
My taste has defintely matured into the fine art realm. I didn't fight for a Beejoir SBFO and when I did get What Wars Are For and All Fall Down, I was a little disappointed to be honest.
If I could get my hands on a Chloe Early, I would. But who's talking about her. The Conor Harrington print at laz is great, even better in Paulah's frame, but not selling. And Neate I didn't appreciate until I went to the show, then was sold. Same with Parla. I'd almost sell my grannie for a Parla, and m ight have to.
So maybe people do go with the flow a bit, but only until they learn to swim against the tide and are no longer out of their depth.
I've definitely found my feet but every now and then something new comes along and drags me back out into the deep water of indecision.

Love and Hate, by chrisps303 on Sept 7, 2007 19:15:03 GMT 1, I do agree with the above posts as my tastes are changing, the prints i bought first i have either sold or are kept in a portfolio. Whos to say in 6 months time when my art knowledge has expanded a bit i may see the appeal in micallef or neate or any of the other artists i just dont get. I never really understood why people bought or paid to go and see art it just seemed odd to me, probably due to the fact my attention span is so short but the more i read these forums and see the art that is produced the more it all appeals to me.

It's really interesting to watch the slow shift on the board in the direction of what I would generally call contemporary fine art. Particularly as people seem to perceive it as a development or maturing in taste.
On the one hand it's a real testament to Banksy. His biggest success IMO is that he's opened the art world to a whole new generation of collector. Many people who would not ordinarily have thought about owning or, in some cases, even looking at art are now massive fans.
However, at the same time is this "maturing" in taste evidence of an underlying lack of artistic value in the street art scene? If so, what does it mean for the scene in the long term? Will everyone's tastes "mature" and the bubble finally burst for the more traditional graff and stencil based artists?
Some months back someone posted an article from one of the national papers (can't remember which - maybe The Times), which was fairly critical of Banksy's work. In essence, the article basically proposed that Banksy's work isn't really art at all. Naturally the article was heavily slated on the forum. Though the arguments put forward were pretty cogent and were pretty similar to the types of comments now being made in this thread about other artists in the scene.
Discuss.
