Its not about the money, by beefstockcube on Sept 11, 2007 7:33:43 GMT 1, I hear you on the Framing , I just got a few quotes for my Applause to get framed.
And everyone is in it for art & money I think - You don't want to buy something you love only to lose £4k or £40 for that matter, on the other hand Im not sure a lot of people would buy something tipped to increase if they realy hated it.
If you invest in shares you buy what you like, not for asthetic reasons but the rule still applies

Its not about the money, by themightyreds on Sept 11, 2007 9:27:30 GMT 1, Some of the prints on my walls cost a tenner and are now worth the same or less than i paid. Some i've paid a few hundred for and aren't yet on the walls because of lack of wall space/laziness in geting them framed. Others i've got wil never get hung because they aren't the sort of imagery i want on my walls. But all of them are one's i like so as cashman says above, i'll not feel any guilty for having them.

Its not about the money, by corblimeylimey on Sept 11, 2007 12:32:03 GMT 1, I've nearly reached capacity as far as the amount of work that can go on the wall, so I'm selling a couple of pieces for the going market value to make way for a couple of new pieces, one (Blek Le Rat, TMWWTW A/P) I'll hopefully get my money back on, the other (I'll announce when the replacement arrives) has gone up around 7 times the price I paid for it. Also I may sell my Banksy prints in the future (perhaps next year) and buy a new (secondhand) car.
So sometimes I'm selling at profit, breakeven or loss, for either more art or cash, anyone got a problem with that?

No problem here CBL. It's pretty obvious that you love the art. Circumstances change. That's life. This whole debate about what people do or do not do with their art is boring.
The only thing that gets my goat is people blatantly flipping a piece of art moments after they bought it and then deriding the art as being crap.

Its not about the money, by a4mnt on Sept 11, 2007 13:17:40 GMT 1, I'll be honest, seeing that is what Cherrypicker is asking for.
When I first saw Micallef's Minotaur Weapon on his website, I was instantly struck that that was my favourite piece of his. I had no idea that within a few months, it would be made available. I also didn't have any idea that it would cost almost £5k. But I was so taken by the piece, that I really wanted it.
I'll admit that I didn't have £5k sitting about, but I did have a boring old ISA showing me a couple of numbers on a PC screen.
I bought MW because I love it, but I might not have done if I thought that it would devalue. So am I right or wrong for doing so? I bought it knowing full well that it would increase in value and that effectively it is money in the bank if ever i needed it. Just like the ISA, only its pissed all over what an ISA makes. but the point is, I bought it because I absolutely love it. Look at my avatar. Thats what you all know me as. But the financial security is nice. And yes, I know there is truly no security financially in it, but the market would have to crash instantly for me to lose any value on it now. More to the point, I have no intention whatseover of ever selling it if I have to and would happily never recoup that £5k as long as I have a couple of quid in the bank and able to live my normal life. That picture will easily give me my money's worth in joy.
The other point here though is if I had bought it purely for investment, i would not hang it, but within the next couple of days, it'll be up on the wall. More money spent on a frame which will never recoup its outlay, so once again, I'm doing it because I love the art.
I know we all hate these money threads but its a fact of life, i doubt very few of us on here can afford to drop thousands of pounds on art and not have one eye on the fact that they are resaleable should the need ever arise. For those of you that can, then good for you.
But for me, I don't care about the money at the moment. My obsession with art is fascinating, its made me a better person and introduced me to a whole load of good people. My flat looks better and I look at all the pieces around my flat with immense joy. My metal Guy Denning came back home last night and I couldn't stop grinning every time i looked at it.
As for people selling prints, well as its already been said, tastes change, space runs out or simply you've bought stuff online and just dont like it as much as you thought in the flesh. I've got a couple of pieces i've bought and not liked, particularly when i was 'learning' but i've waited a respectful period of time so not to be viewed as a flipper and so far have not sold or swapped a single thing.
Hope that helps Cherrypicker.
