next best thing, by tokyojeff on Jul 3, 2007 23:11:41 GMT 1, I think brainthedog was only trying to get some input from everyone as to the ever changing urban art scene as to who will we all be talking about this time next year (with the exception of MR. B who will live forever in our hearts and minds). As for me, hopefully, I will have brought some new Japanese art to the forum for all to enjoy.

Thanks man. Yeah, here's the deal. I would love to own a Banksy but I can't even afford a print! I admit, I'm new to the scene and am trying to get my bearings and am reading forum threads, looking at stuff in galleries, etc...but, still can't afford the mainstream stuff. I love all the usual suspects work...Banksy, Eine, Insect, Micallef, etc...but they are all well beyond my price range. I wanted feedback on some emerging artists where I can a) learn more about them b) determine if their stuff moves me and then c) buy an original or print.
i can tell that this community is sensitive to flippers so apologies if i came across that way.

next best thing, by tokyojeff on Jul 4, 2007 0:01:04 GMT 1, + 1 for getting in the mix and sparking a heated debate ! I think the 50 link will be of some help to you. I found it very informative as to who is out there and what people are interested in. Honestly I too was unaware as to how wide a range of art is actually out there and jumped in with both feet earlier this year. I had no idea at how quickly what I bought appreciated in value but as a collector would never sell a single piece unless forced to do so. For me its all about waking up each day and having something that makes me smile and forget about all the crap that's going on around me

next best thing, by RBK on Jul 4, 2007 0:51:18 GMT 1, brainthedog - also don't limit yourself to 'street/stencil' art. There is amazing stuff out there. Agree the 'Under 50' post would be a good place to trawl through.

Can we pin the under £50 thread somewhere so we don't lose it? Its always going to be a populare thread after all. What do you think Mods? Also could we have an artist section with one thread on each artist in an alphabetical list?

next best thing, by corblimeylimey on Jul 4, 2007 10:59:22 GMT 1, brainthedog check out the links section too, but you shouldn't be disappointed if you buy something and the value is the same a year later.
About a third of my prints are worth no more than I paid for them, and 2 of those cost around £300 each, most of the rest cost around £35 -£70 each, some have doubled and the best performing has gone up 700% in 7 months, but the thing is you'll never know untill the time has passed.
I'm really happy with all my prints regardless of investment performance, you may not be able to say the same if you bought something for investment which didn't perform.

next best thing, by corblimeylimey on Jul 4, 2007 11:42:31 GMT 1, Blek Le Rats, Tango & MWWTW worth no more than I paid for them, in fact if you're lucky you may pick one up for £50 less, although my MWWTW is an AP so that might put some wind behind it, but they're not for sale anyway so it doesn't matter.

next best thing, by corblimeylimey on Jul 4, 2007 11:43:28 GMT 1, i'm leaping in here, also new-ish to the scene. i buy prints primarily cause i want them on my wall, any increase in value is by the by. Same as a house - people buy purely to make money but the point of a house is to live in, i see the point of art is to have it on yer wall, come home from a long day at work and look at your print and go 'jeez i really love that' having said that my girlfriend went to art college with Ant Micallef...wish she'd got some work off him then for the price of a pint to sell now!!
Is it true he went to Exeter?

next best thing, by corblimeylimey on Jul 4, 2007 18:59:36 GMT 1, 'interesting' is good or bad? any comments / constructive critique wlecome show was an open studio as part of london 'arts unwrapped', just getting a bigger body of work together in order to get some gallery interest (he says hopefully!)
I like this one the most 'living room'
I like the 'movement' in it, and for the same reason 'streetscene', but it's just not really my style of art.

next best thing, by buffin on Jul 4, 2007 19:56:35 GMT 1, I heard of this guy called Banksy. He might be someone to watch.
Is that the guy from Bristol? No, he'll never amount to anything. Can take a few of his prints off your hands if you like tho
