Canvas Hanging, by manchestermike on Apr 5, 2007 14:20:05 GMT 1, What are people's thoughts on hanging canvases?
I've seen some framed, some just hung
I've just received a great work on canvas today and need to figure out how to show it best...

If you want to look after it, custom made perspex case / frame, a well respected member of the ebay forum knows the ins and outs of these ( has his paranoid pictures and GWB canvases in them.

i'll await the gasps of shock & horror, but i used an ikea kit that cost me ยฃ1....screwed two brackets onto the inside of the frame, then threaded the wire between
a canvas isn't very heavy - in most cases it's much lighter than a framed print.
I was tempted to have it framed - someone in the "get yr banksys out" thread posted a nick walker mooning mona that he'd had framed...but i think provided yr house isn't damp, it's not in direct sunlight, and you haven't got kids / pets to put holes in it, then it should be fine

Pets... but as long as it's high enough it should be ok... will have a think. Couldn't go for the ikea idea as I think I'm banned from there after my last visit ;D

I think custom made perspex cases do preserve original works but you should also consider the wish of the artist when they created the work. For example I was told by an artist that I should never glaze or reframe a peice of work I brought from him as he intended the work to be viewed without glass in front and chose the frame specifically. I respected his wishes even if this means more maintenence from my point of view.

Good advice Ziggy and something that has to be taken into consideration, none of the 10 canvases I have are protected, but none are worth serious money, depending on the work I think I would consider protecting anything that had cost me serious dosh ( its a personal thing, I am a walking clusterfcuk at the best of times and a high money canvas would be sure to come a cropper in my house in mins ). It also depend on the environment, I dont smoke inside, but if I did I would be alot more carefull of what and how I hung stuff.
