The Most overated Banksy Print?, by LoveRat on Jan 5, 2007 1:16:36 GMT 1, Since there is a thread for the most underated print , I thought it would be interesting to hear peoples' opinions on the most overated prints. For me its got to be Pulp Fiction and HMV, they just don't do anything for me.

The Most overated Banksy Print?, by pastiepie on Jan 5, 2007 3:48:10 GMT 1, HMV doesn't really do much for me either. I think maybe it's just a bit simple in a boring, Whereas GWB is simple in a genius way. Pulp Fiction is probably my favourite print, a twist on two iconic images, what's not to like? I dislike most of the rats but I'd hardly say they gained the attention of the likes of happy choppers, Christ with Shopping and Love is in the Air.

Funny as I think HMV is a very underrated image, I think its a nice wee bit of revenge for Nipper after years of gramaphone abuse. As for Overrated prints, Queen Vic has to be up there, its a terrible composition, badly executed, just look at her shoulders / legs / feet, the first time you see it you have to work out whats where and who it belongs to. Apart from the best colour / pigment ever, its not got alot going for it apart from maturity. IMO

The Most overated Banksy Print?, by lesroy on Jan 5, 2007 9:32:15 GMT 1, woah! awesome thread responses, this is what discussions should be all about!
Im not a big fan of HMV whereas Pulp Fiction is amazing in my eyes.... trully memorable!
Maybe the next overrated one in my book is Barcode, again whereas I adore Golf Sale, another Black & White one. Don't get me wrong, I do quite like Barcode but I'm not drawn to it like alot of Banksy's others.

The Most overated Banksy Print?, by slowmo on Jan 5, 2007 10:29:49 GMT 1, HMV is a great idea, Anarchy personified, His masters voice witha bazooka at it. Barcode, Capitalism that will eventually turn us all into animals. They are both great. Gotta say I agree with Queen Victoria, at most its a slight at monarchy, but Monkey Queen does a much better job of that

Never seen it in the flesh, so am willing to accept it may be overrated

The Most overated Banksy Print?, by RBK on Jan 5, 2007 18:44:37 GMT 1, Have you guys seen Barcode in the flesh? It is huge, and the quality is really cool (as if it has been sprayed on). I'm honestly surprised - but maybe I'm biased because I love it and own one.

I can't believe Pulp Fiction has been mentioned, if you saw the actual outdoor piece then it gives it more power, its one of the classics

CWSB and Radar Rat are nice enough but seriously overpriced. All the LA prints (with the exception of Applause) leave me cold.

The Most overated Banksy Print?, by grt on Jan 13, 2007 17:28:24 GMT 1, Right i am gonna jump in and defend my hmv print! lol
I think it really matters what the print means to you personally- for instance as a producer of underground dance music and a dj, for me hmv is perfect as it reminds me of the commercialisation of music and it represents my thoughts towards all the chart stuff that is in the charts - as the charts are no measure of popularity just a measure of the amount of units a label can buy back.
however i can understand if the print (hmv) doesnt mean as much to other people.
mine takes pride of place above my decks and always makes me smile when i am having a quick mix! and thats what is important for me.

The Most overated Banksy Print?, by Eric Pause on Aug 15, 2016 21:45:06 GMT 1, I never really cared for the Toxic Mary print. Mostly because I've never fully understood the meaning. Something about religion being poisonous, maybe? Anyone care to shed a light on this?
Besides that, Western Super Mare, and Bomb Middle England are my least favourite of Banksy's screen prints.

The Most overated Banksy Print?, by Howard Johnson on Aug 15, 2016 22:08:10 GMT 1, My vote would be the warhol homages "Soup Can" and "Kate Moss." Soup cans because I'm an american and don't quite get the Tesco imagery, and Kate Moss because I don't quite understand the hype behind her as an icon. They're both Banksy, so I imagine there is a clever meaning that I simply don't understand, but neither jump out to me as particularly interesting when compared to the rest of his work.

I personally think GWB is highly overrated based on the price they sell for. For me LIITA is the most iconic of his images, and think that its kinda weird that it sells for almost half of what GWB goes for. Also, with "Donuts," while you certainly are entitled to your option about the image, the quality of this print (and most of the later prints for that matter) is far superior to many of the earlier works. That kind of thing really matters to me when making the decision about buying expensive Banksy works, and I really tend to favor the later editions based on quality alone.

For me its got to be Pulp Fiction and HMV, they just don't do anything for me. You'd be a lot more impressed if it had of been released in this stitch format I got so excited when I saw this, I may have wet myself a just little....

The Most overated Banksy Print?, by agu on Aug 15, 2016 22:59:58 GMT 1, I love the humour in HMV (which I don't own). I do have a Golf Sale and the "young uns" just don't get it. I guess you had to be there at the time...
Overrated.. Soup Cans! Soup fucking cans and most of the rats - though they work well on the street, CND and Love is in the air all are well just a bit meh. I really struggle with morons.. I get it I just don't get why you would want one.
Interesting that print quality is a factor for some as that is the bit that Banksy didn't contribute
Good question OP !!

Jumping in to add to your post... For me there are B prints that represent wall pieces he has done, which are more like stencils and some even with overspray and then there are illustrations like S&S, Donuts, Trolleys ect which are just totally different animals. Each have their qualities and while the illustrations are much more detailed the others get a good portion of their meaning and notoriety from where and when they were done on the street. I personally love both. The over spray detail on the Nola, LIITA, Sale Ends ect ..even the small amount on the balloon on the GWB. As for detail, I love the work on the S&S, Donuts and Grin Reaper. Not really going with the "Overated" theme here but while I have always had my favorites, I found once I owned more pieces I then appreciated some more and had new favorites after seeing them up close on the wall for a bit.

The Most overated Banksy Print?, by Howard Johnson on Aug 15, 2016 23:10:36 GMT 1, I agree Black Apple Art, for me the newer ones represent more of a "fine art" execution of his artwork where the older ones have the rough charm that many people love. Don't get me wrong, I'd kill to own a Flying Copper or LIITA, but when it comes down to spending a huge amount of money I tend to prefer the more professionally executed pieces.

Have to agree. I don't think he has done many bad images. The only prints I wouldn't buy are the soup cans and the Kate moss. Other than that I love his original ideas and my favourite swings between a few every now and then.
