Banksy - slowly becoming what he is against..., by Daniel Silk on Sept 20, 2006 14:20:58 GMT 1,
Yeah, I don't think this question really has a clean cut answer Many of us have been members of this forum back when you could still pick up a print of your favorite Banksy image for £75 or less, and we saved up our pennies to buy them coz we love them ;D Now that most Banksy prints are out of our price range we are getting into other artists such as D*Face, Dolk, Eelus, Insect, Jamie Hewlett, Faile & Beneine. How many of the people buying Banksy stuff now are only following the fashion? Would they be just as proud to have a £30 D*Face print on the wall rather than a £1000 Banksy one? I think not

Banksy - slowly becoming what he is against..., by tn on Sept 20, 2006 17:02:16 GMT 1, yeah, that's what i said, wasn't it?
but my point of view is, that it isn't about the object, it's about the message and i think banksy is still kicking it. and he's doing it like noone else before. the most streetartist end up in an designerjob and talk about the good old days, when they where up on the street. then they laugh about the folly of youth and lean back in their giant pile of money. banksy invests his money back into his art and defines himself new from time to time. he attacks this rotten society bothways, in the small (paris-thingy...) and in the big (africa...). oh, and he's, even if he's selling big right now, just a name with no face. the most people would stick their stupid faces in every camera around and bask in their own glow till they get burned to the nothing they are. if banksy would do something like this he would stop being banksy... just take a look at his manifesto on his website...
and that's why i like him! ;D

Heh! My first day in an eternity I didnt view the forum for at least a good 14 hour stint....and thankfully gm confirmed "it's been quiet today"
So only just seen this post - and can honestly say what I told gm ...am fed up of this Banksy shit. He's good but there are soooo many others out there that are so much better than him, or equal, or just as good.
Oh, and I just bought my first of many £30ish D*Face pieces the other day .. it's the nuts. But none of you join his forum or buy his stuff. Or we'll all be back at square one!! Buying annsky portrait canvases off Ebay!! ;D ;D ;D I still want one...and thats just cos I'm better looking than you are Martin. ;D

Sorry but I don' think this is true. Banksy may say he loves doing street art more than prints but look at the facts- when you have an official agent selling your work, an exclusive company doing your prints, international exhibitions, and prices passing six figures for your canvases, you are a bonifide artist. Banksy has already successfully transitioned into the commercial art world, like John Michele Basquiat did in the 80s (well sort of, he didn't handle it too well), and Shepard Fairey did in the 90s. The thing is, both of those artists continued to do great work after they became successful, and I think Banksy will do the same. The biggest change is that he now has many more fans, driving the price of his work up. That is simply not going to change now and we have to get used to it.

Banksy - slowly becoming what he is against..., by abeautifulnight on Sept 21, 2006 11:15:25 GMT 1, But while the numbers are growing here so are the prices
I'm sick of seeing people tap this place for information - of buying unsigned and selling as silly prices
A large number of people who get to buy off pictures on walls or even in LA are nothing more then scalpers. Getting there before the fans and then selling at high prices through ebay.
It becoming sickening
And so many member of this site are at the same racket.

I understand exactly how you feel.
I've got a flying copper at home. He's been behind the wardrobe for a couple of months now because his frame blew off the wall, the glass shattered, and I can't afford to have him re-glazed. I feel bad that he's stuck behind the wardrobe because he should be out in the open smiling at someone and making them happy.
I want him to go to a good home, one where he will be hung on the wall and loved as much as I love him. I don't care about making a profit. If I found the right person I'd let them have him for a stupidly low price. But I'd need to be certain they were buying him for the right reason, and not wanting to bung him on ebay or wherever asap so that they could make a fast buck.
I think he will be remaining behind the wardrobe for a while yet, because 'the right person' is going to be very difficult to find.

Cheers Danny

Banksy - slowly becoming what he is against..., by mido on Sept 21, 2006 12:06:00 GMT 1, did someone mention my name? LOL
I'll give it a good home. and if there were any ones you missed and want, I'll swap you for it (the others, except I fought..., are easier/cheaper to frame as well)

Banksy - slowly becoming what he is against..., by mido on Sept 21, 2006 12:17:00 GMT 1, yeah, but no disrespect, but this isn't overnight. this has been happening for almost a year now (since CND Soldiers in Dec 2005). J&J signed sold out in 4 days in late jan 2006, and lots were immediately up on ebay. It was basically the book and crude oils that kicked all this off. I'm not defending it, I'm just putting it into a historical perspective - this hasn't happened because of the LA show. And you've been a member since April, so you must have seen this earlier as well.
I don't totally mind someone buying one and then later selling it as they have a holiday, training etc to pay for. But I've never liked people buying lots of copies, and/or copies with the express intention of selling.
I'm also a big Jimmy cauty fan and there are a couple of dealers who deliberately buy his stuff, and stick it on ebay the day it arrives (no joke! however, they usually make little profit from it, so maybe the joke is on them).
I also completely fail to understand shops who are wholesaled to, and then sell the remainder at a higher price when they get sold out at the supplier. that one still baffles me. The whole point of wholesaling (as a general business concept) is to give you different outlets around the country to spread your work and help the provinces out (I fully support this) - but I don't get how that should mean you can sell at a higher price once sold out at the supplier... strange. Not a big gripe, I just fail to see the logic.

Well don't expect to see me there any time soon. His stuff does absolutely nothing for me.

Banksy - slowly becoming what he is against..., by recycle on Apr 28, 2011 9:41:29 GMT 1, Its great that people can buy the unsigned work but it won't hold its current pricing. Anyone thinking the unsigned will keep rising is a fool. Banksy is a great painter. But anyone just arriving to the party thinking they can buy in now - buying unsigned works 0 has missed the boat. Buy what you like, not what a good investment
A 400% increase in five years from the stated ebay prices..... Yep this guy was wrong........
Shame everything else seems right
