Is Banksys signature worth it?, by ABC on Jan 17, 2007 0:03:59 GMT 1, Go for what you like. I know the prices are going up but think about what you are going to be looking at on the wall not what you have stashed under the bed for a rainy day.

Is Banksys signature worth it?, by ptron on Jan 17, 2007 7:32:56 GMT 1, Speaking of signatures, is it normal for them to be in different places on the same prints, e.g. on ebay right now there are 2 signed applauses, with sigs in different places, print numbers 61 and 79. item no. 180074208493 and 220070603479

Not uncommon on older prints, i.e. monkey queen - but on later prints I've always seen it in the same place
Not much help eh?

Is Banksys signature worth it?, by tomhills on Jan 17, 2007 16:44:42 GMT 1, my mum is kind of your "proper" art kind of person, although due to much badgering has accepted banksy, and she put a sort of philosophical point to me: with mr banks being so enigmatic, having his signature on a print defines him as being in that place at that time. for an artist in the public eye a signature would not be such a big deal but for banksy it is however. i'm not so sure and would always try and get a print i liked first and the signature second. mad looking forward to "morons" by the way.

Is Banksys signature worth it?, by ABC on Jan 18, 2007 0:19:17 GMT 1, Im not sure what a "proper" art kind of person is? I studied Art and art history in 89 for a few years, does this make me a proper kind of Art person? Going back hundreds of years artists have made their mark on the works they created, this is a deciding factor in resale values at auction. Take two Leonardo da Vinci's for instance one signed, one not, after years of countless tests they may come out with the same results for both works, deciding they were from da vinci's workshop, the signed one would be worth millions the unsigned would not as it would be by an unknown artist. As for prints, its unusual for unsigned prints to have an effect like Banksys ones do. Most artists will sign a limited print and most investers will only buy signed prints, it makes sense. The problem with Banksy prints is the fact that they are difficult to get hold of when released and when they do sell out they are listed the next day for 2k plus.

Is Banksys signature worth it?, by tomhills on Jan 18, 2007 0:29:19 GMT 1, investors is o r, but anyway, my mum funnily enough did art history too. my point being banksy attracts people like myself who are not that interested in the broader spectrum of art as a media although we do strike a chord with what bankst produces. of course investors will only go for signed but the unique nature of banksy, that which is represented in his prints, is that his art is significant due to it's nature not it's value. does that make sense? if not i'll explain more tomorrow, i'm knackered. sorry abc if i sound grouchy, need sleep. peace.

It comes down to the fact that he is "with the times" and many younger collectors love this kind of work. If you are into buying Banksy prints now, I would say you have the bug and will continue on the credit card wrecking path that we all have to take to fulfill our art dreams. You may not have a broader spectrum yet but you will in the future as you are collecting art from an artist who IMO has created a new movement.
