Banksy creating what he protests against, by Deleted on May 8, 2011 12:30:34 GMT 1, Whilst queuing thinking about the Tesco Posters. I only saw a few people I know who are into art and lots of students who were clearly there thinking they were going to make thousands of pounds. The poster is protesting against the way Tesco in particular goes about its capitalist way, destroying local business, as well as what seemed to me a nod to the rioters and the alleged Petrol Bombs that were found in the squat by the police.
So obviously apart from getting the usual publicity which follows Mr B around,he is also helping to create the next bunch of 'Capitalists' by selling posters 5 at a time to people who don't give a f**k about art. My point is where should he draw the line.
I believe if he was totally sincere, he should have taken £10k out of his back pocket and given it to the PRSC without telling anyone. He may have course done this already. Who knows ?. It just stinks of publicity to me and just didn't feel right.
Especially at the Anarchist book fair of all places.
Having said that at least I was able to hook some forum members up with a cheap poster and had a nice time chatting with some nice folk.

how should an artist identify the audience who gives a f**k about art and sell to only them? what are your suggestions?

Banksy creating what he protests against, by Deleted on May 8, 2011 12:41:05 GMT 1, if I was Banksy I would probably do the same as him. I am just trying to create debate about this fuelling what he protests against.
They clearly didn't care about them ending up on ebay as they were giving 5 out at a time.

Banksy creating what he protests against, by sal on May 8, 2011 12:53:27 GMT 1, Im no expert on these things, but the way I see it is that hes constantly mocking with people, showing that even when obviously pointing out to the issue, people are still gonna follow the trend/hype, and act the same way (auction piece is the sweetest example for that)...
also, by every release he does, Banksy raises the awareness about the issue, and if he "just" donated £10k out of his own pocket, I would probably never hear about the riots or the Stokes Croft (Im not from UK obviously)...

Banksy creating what he protests against, by Warm Gun on May 8, 2011 13:03:56 GMT 1, I think he's damned if he does and damned if he don't. Maybe he feels he needs to keep himself feeling relevant by supporting these causes, he's obviously still sees himself as a bit of an anarchist which I love!. Like Sal says, his involvement certainly raises the profile of these things. Maybe he's going about it all the wring way? then again, maybe it's not his fault that people are able to profit from his own generosity.
Personally I like the way he's helped this cause this time round. It's made headline news and advertised a bit of anarchy at the same time. I'm pretty sure plenty of real Banksy fans managed to pick up a poster for keeps....some were always going to end up on the bay, that's part of it.
I'll probably still shop in Tesco's but maybe next time I'll tread dog crap up the aisles.

Banksy creating what he protests against, by digger on May 8, 2011 13:10:40 GMT 1, How about this, he knew they'd sell for more and so offered the people round Stokes Croft an opportunity to redistribute some assets from those who (judging by ebay) have a deficiency in their assets to common sense ratio.

Jo Brooks and POW are not at all bothered about who gets what, they get their PR and get rid of the things as quick as possible. They have basically just paid £1000 based on 50p per poster print cost... for pricesless promotion in newspapers and on social networks. As well as fanboys creaming over their brand. It got the usual daily mailers excited along with stories kate middleton in a bikini.
I love our american neighbours, but this new found interest in urban art over there due to thierry and banksy is 2006 all over again, is grinding. The brigade has been in full swing lately. They are just late to the party and its creating even more people interested in more bang for their buck.

Banksy creating what he protests against, by mayhem on May 8, 2011 13:30:19 GMT 1, I sent a message to a seller yesterday and was having a pop at him about the buy now price of£250 and how he was not helping the people whom love art etc...
His reply was, " I had £1500 of damage caused to my home because of the riots, so f**k your opinion, this is banksy's way of helping me out"
He might of had a point....

Hmm, what for example?? His biggest event over the last few years has been the Bristol Museum show, which was spectacular (imo of course), hugely accessable, free for all of us, and massively popular.

Banksy creating what he protests against, by Deleted on May 8, 2011 13:49:50 GMT 1, I love brand Banksy ,don't get me wrong.
I also like protesting and people who protest against things.
I was supposed to be helping a friend set up a stall in the book fair yesterday. He smashed up a company that was responsible for building part of a weapon the Israelis were using to bomb the Palestinians. He and his associates did around £250k worth of damage to that company. His defense was he was committing a crime to stop a greater crime(it had to be done at the time the bombing was happening). He got a not guilty. The company was down Brighton way,i think they were called Radion, i may be wrong with the name. My point I am trying to make i guess is that I personally don't believe this was the right way to go around raising awareness.
If Tesco's in Stokes Croft gets Petrol bombed, could Banksy be arrested for causing incitment to riot ?
Theres been loads of media coverage anyway. So the raising awareness doesn't do it for me. Its a cheap PR stunt. However, I love brand Bansky none the less for it.

Banksy creating what he protests against, by skitchy on May 8, 2011 13:53:55 GMT 1, Its all very well saying that but ultimately who else has this kind of following. From a marketing point of view or even political this sort of PR is completely genius! Banksy has been able to do this for years.. and who's complaining?
I agree some of his recent stuff hasn't been as meaningful/original as his earlier work. I really doubt banksy gives a shit about the money, hes not gonna be sitting infront of eBay watching his work go up.
But you have to admit its all quite tactical only releasing 1 print a year when you have the likes of brainwash and shep fairey blasting them out ever other week. Which is why people are paying 150 quid for a fucking five pound poster!!?? its ludicrous!
Its a lose-lose situation - if he had sold these for £150 people would have still bought them and they'd be on the bay for 500.
and the whole staying anonymous thing is a whole essay in itself!
hats off to him, thats all I can say.
