I will give that a go - I had a good trawl through the thread and the main takeaway seems to be the rat with balloon and the lighter smoke texture but be great to try and get that thread reactivated as it sounds like it could be helpful.

If it comes down to it I will post a couple of pictures to garner opinion on this page but tbh I would rather try and work it out myself based on the information within the elusive thread.

Looking at buying a petrol bomb litho, reading through previous comments there were ways to tell fakes from genuine via the smoke...

But all images seem to of been deleted as they were old posts..

Does anyone have pictures of comparisons?

From the above photo, it is not possible to tell, with any degree of certainty, whether that Tesco Value Petrol Bomb poster is legitimate.



There is a notable difference between being able to:

(a) identify some fakes; and

(b) confirm that a particular piece is authentic.


Spotting a poor‑calibre fake can often be easy, even for a layperson and from images alone.

For reassurance if offered a potentially‑good‑quality counterfeit, you will need to examine the poster in person with a magnification tool — in an ideal world, comparing the poster side‑by‑side with another one you know to be genuine.

Alternatively or in addition, get close‑up photos in high resolution, zooming in much further so that the rosette patterns become visible, from what should be an offset lithograph.

Many of the fake posters widely in circulation a few years ago were simple to identify.

But that doesn't mean the same would apply today.



Of those previous fakes, Nick Clark / lobster of Tate Ward is the earliest known source.

On this message board, he was initially offloading what he described as "a couple" back in June 2017*:





However, it is especially in 2019 and 2020 that Clark appears to have sold dozens of counterfeit posters:

•  individually to many collectors, including members of this forum;

•  a few at a time to other dealers and galleries;

•  publicly via Tate Ward, in sales throughout 2019 and 2020; and

•  who knows where else.

A hat‑tip must of course go to jamieb.

In 2020, he had the courage to stick his head above the parapet on this forum, for the benefit of his fellow members. I consider such actions heroic.

Moreover, it is worth emphasising that this public‑spiritedness by jamieb also came at a personal cost. His decision to expose the shenanigans, calmly and factually, incurred the wrath of others who had vested interests to protect.

Some of the messages he later received, most notably from Pint of cockles, were abusive and frankly despicable.

This type of thing has sadly become the clichéd fate of the honourable whistleblower.

I see the counterfeit ones seem to look like a fat rat and the others are more skinny, if that makes sense.

Thanks for highlighting this soap opera as it occurred before I joined the forum and has been riveting plane reading (starts at around page 52 on this consolidated thread for those interested).
A couple questions for you Met:

There were a few calls for you to get involved 4 years ago and weigh in but it seems like you decided not to until now - why?
Pint of cockles was not in the thread - did he go by a different name then or just delete the posts?
Where is JamieB now?
Did anyone hear from Nick again?  Did he go to jail?
Did TateWard follow up with the results of the police investigation?
Was it ever revealed the role Nick had at TateWard as Dannys business partner for 3 years
How did TateWard survive this?  Seems like the trust that should come with paying a high auction fee should not exist for them and eBay would be a better option… did they clean up their act in your mind?
