Faile puzzle boxes, by thx1138 on Jun 3, 2011 10:17:41 GMT 1, I can't help but say that while these Faile Puzzle Boxes are beautiful creations they definitely look way too similar to the Puzzle Box that C215 showed at a New York gallery back in 2008?... I know that the 'idea' of puzzle boxes is not new and that artists do this kind of thing all the time...'borrow' concepts and make it better...(Banksy has been known to dabble) just had to point it out and give a little credit to C215
I personally think Faile's whole mixed up Cubist painting phase was maybe inspired by this one C215 piece...could be the conspiracy theorist in me....and if I recall C215 was selling his Puzzle Box for maybe $1500-2000?...I'm just sayin' people.....go ahead let me have it....btw I am a big fan of both Faile & C215

I think the concept has been around before C215, but I can understand people's questioning of the similarities. I just did a Google search for 'wood puzzle blocks' and it returned quite a bit of results.
As for the piece itself, the Faile puzzles are more intricate and immersive than the C215 pieceโFrom an aesthetic point of view as well as a functional point of view. Flipping over the Faile blocks doesn't make for identical puzzles that's been varied in color only (like the C215 piece).
I can see the dismay, but the Faile piece is a lot more exciting and rich in detail, themes and imagery.

Not trying to beat a dead horse here really, just want to make sure you have all the facts straight for the sake of fairness to the artists...
My point was not asking which 'Puzzle Box' you think is better, but merely pointing out that C215 originated this version of it in 2008 before Faile decided to have a go...obviously Failes Puzzle Box is a much better execution....it's the 2011 model!
You are incorrect in saying that C215 only varied the color of the image...C215's Puzzle Box had Six unique stencil cat images and colors for each side just like the Faile one has six different images per box...same exact thing.
The C215 box came with six cards stenciled with each cat image as a guide (2 of the 6 cats seen below)....the analog version of the iPhone app I guess?
Damn I knew I should have purchased it when I had the chance....I remember thinking it was way too overpriced at 2k in 2008....funny how that works..

LOL. What's there to talk about? I couldn't be bothered with the reply as I think you have pretty much put your finger on it here.

You are assuming that Faile ahve been inspired or have stolen the idea from C215. Well who knows. They said: โThe idea to build modularity into our practice was inspired by kids wooden block puzzle games from the turn of the last century. They were so full of potential, and a natural continuation of work we were already doing with our โapple boxesโ โ FAILE
Faile have been working with wooden boxes for a long time and as they mentioned this was just natural progression from recent wooden canvases and wooden blocks pieces.

2007
2009
2010
2011
Personally I think the C215 box looks very poor (like a project from the high school). BTW were was it exhibited? I have never seen it before. Do you have a link to the gallery?

Faile puzzle boxes, by thx1138 on Jun 4, 2011 23:37:57 GMT 1, The C215 Puzzle Box first appeared Dec. '08 at ADHOC Gallery in BROOKLYN!...isn't that where Faile is from? Maybe they bought the C215 puzzle box?
I don't think the gallery is still in the same Bogart Street Brooklyn location anymore..
It was a solo show by C215 called Junk Store...here's a link to it on C215's Flickr page:
www.flickr.com/photos/c215/sets/72157611254963788/with/3112559015/
Again I am not debating which Puzzle Box is better, merely who had the 'IDEA' first.
Perfect example is AROFISH vs. BANKSY Separation Wall piece...
clearly the Arofish piece is a Million Dollar idea with a Hundred Dollar execution.....yet it preceded the Banksy work by several years and possibly inspired an entire Trompe L'oeil phase in Banksy's work that he is still running with....
If you really want to get technical and conspiratorial (which I always do) both Arofish & Banksy were in a little known Taiwanese book back in 2005 called Graffiti Urban Wallpaper where the Arofish Separation Wall piece first appeared...a few pages after Banksy early works chapter....
Great rare book actually: www.art-el.co.uk/products/graffiti-urban-wallpaper-by-nina-liao-jim-meng
Of course these kind of 'inspirational intersections' have always happened in art and always will, not offended at all, just informed....
I am just geeking out on the connections with fellow art geeks....
