Tracey Emin "The Kiss" Print, by Heavyconsumer on May 22, 2011 1:23:23 GMT 1, if you were 13 and you did this in gcse art you would probably fail. everyone here could do better. everyone. just my opinion.
Until coming across your comment I'd thought I'd resist contributing my 2p worth, but I can't ignore the urge to agree wholeheartedly with you. I generally feel this way about all of her work when I see it. I've had more learned/cultured/intelligent people than myself explain the merits of it to me in the past, but still find no redeaming qualities in it myself. Just goes to show how wonderfully controversial the concept of art is and the idea of quality in art, whatever that means to you. If I could add my email address to a mailing list to receive one of these for free, I would give them my address out of appreciation for the offer and ask them to keep the print for someone who wanted it. It's probably my favourite Emin image by the way! I just don't enjoy her work and don't enjoy owning overpriced signatures as investments or status symbols, unless they're pleasing to me in some more meaningful way.
FWIW I think it's great that such a popular event is commemorated with such an affordable collectibe item by an otherwise very expensive artist. And I'm sure these will make great gifts for some people's grandmas too.

Tracey Emin "The Kiss" Print, by Gentle Mental on May 22, 2011 11:14:33 GMT 1, I'm sure we can all make our own spot and butterfly and add a skull an iconic image and spin some paint on a round canvas and cut a gwb stencil, crosses the eyes on spongebob and Photoshop an Obama jpeg in red and blue and make millions. Ah. But we didn't. Or can't really, till it's been done.

"...and don't enjoy owning overpriced signatures as investments or status symbols..."
unfortunatly, very often it does come down to this aspect of the artwork giving us that extra, or complete feeling of satisfaction. Art gives us that placebo affect, plain and simple, which is why an amateur's version of a great piece might not quite resonate with us in the same way as the original by the artist with the big name.

You have a very valid point there ( but we didnt till its already been done) But poor old Tracy has never been able to offer more than your basic onion peeler. it wont be long before she produces a set of wicker baskets

Absolutely Alex. I appreciate that, hence my comment. I'm not knocking those who do. We each have our own reasons for buying/owning/displaying/hording the things we do. If I'd been more honest in that post, I suppose I might have also said that I'm not well-off enough to be totally focused on investment value of all the art I buy. Were I such, then my comment/choice would be more valid perhaps. As it is, I have to settle for infrequently buying only pieces I believe I will want on the wall. However, I would just as gladly hang amateur artists' work in my home were it to resonate with me strongly enough. A rendition of a great artist's work or a famous image is less likely to do so with me, unless it has either a slightly original take on that piece or is a truly splendid copy that captured the essence of the originalwork/artist, but in either case, I would still be delighted to hang and enjoy it. In fact I saw a beautiful amateur version of Starry Night on the wall of an apartment I visited last week. Not an exact copy, but a thickly textured homage and clearly by a talented person (whose name remains unknown to me). I'd have had it in a flash were it offerd to me though. I see this as the polar opposite of owning art I consider to be lacking in any discernable quality just for the sake of the name in the corner which, as stated, I don't do, but may those who do so enjoy it.
