I agree if people didnt bid then prices would not be so high surely? But at the same time im sure theres a few people who are happy to pay over the odds for something they actually want. Of course this more than likly applies to those who money is not a real issue for. I bet you even get people on her watching to see whats talked about discussed most and think to them selves oh i must have that in my collection regardless of if they thought for them selves that they liked it. Agai those with the money and just love the hype that goes with this scene at the moment. Things certainly changed allot in the in the last few years, i think now its cool and on trend to like urban art you get people buying purely for that reason,

Stik Plaques, by eschiff on Jul 26, 2011 12:44:12 GMT 1, it is almost impossible to stop flipping.... its a sad situation.[/quote sorry ryan, i hate when galleries/producers get on their high horse about this. First off, i didn't get a plaque, and really wish i had, but don't blame anyone for making money of something they purchased. That's called life. But you are essentially the primary flipper. You can coat it will all kind of verbiose language talking about how you work with the artist to produce something of value, but in essence, yourself (and every other gallery) is making money from the artist. Flipping something is capitalism, if you don't like capitalism that's another issue. But if something has value, and is worth something more to me than it is to whoever put it on ebay, than i'm quite happy that i have the opportunity to buy it and that i'm not just shit out of luck. Flipping also helps you (as the gallery) as it ups prices (though this can create a bubble) and perhaps more so, it creates hype. Which means your next release will set out just as quick. Which means you'll have more money to reinvest in another product, whether by Stik, or another artist. The value of art is determined by those who experience it, not by those who set the initial prices.

Stik Plaques, by shower on Jul 26, 2011 12:46:27 GMT 1, Ryan, maybe for the next release you should take pictures of the back of each one Stik signs. There is likely to be slight differences between them so you could maybe tell which is on ebay even without seeing the number. Once you know you have the details of the buyer you can black list them from future releases.
Also you could do what another gallery I know did once - After working out the details of the a guy who was flipping a print on ebay, the gallery owner emailed him stating that they werent too happy as its taking the piss a bit and so they were willing to give a full refund for the piece with no future questions asked. Then they added that if he continued to flip the print he would be blacklisted and his details may find their way onto other blacklists for other galleries, including POW. Galleries do talk you know!
...And guess what, he went for the full refund!
Anyway, great work with the release, nice pieces and good prices. Keep it up!

Flipping by definition is the act of buying something with the sole intention of reselling for profit. Don't confuse flipping with production and business. Also, the artist is making money from the gallery, so it is mutual, symbiotic relationship. A flipper is making money for himself, only, so really it is parasitic....

Stik Plaques, by eschiff on Jul 26, 2011 13:03:13 GMT 1, but he's also providing value for someone else...that's a massive value.
i may have mispoke, i don't think they're flipping, but they're the same parasitic relationship between a gallery and an artist as there is to a flipper and a gallery in my humble opinion.
i don't have a solution so that probably makes my point moot, but a gallery is gaining profit from selling something at more than they bought it for. which is what a flipper does.

Stik Plaques, by saint on Jul 26, 2011 13:12:24 GMT 1, But the relationship between a gallery and its artist is beneficial to both sides. Without the gallery to provide hype, put on shows, sell prints, and in ryans case make these plaques, the artist wouldnt sell as much work. Without the artist the gallery wouldnt have any work to sell. The relationship is mutual, symbiotic and as i say beneficial to both sides.
I think the relationship between a flipper and a gallery is much more parasitic. The gallery (and artist) do not need flippers, but the flipper can't do anything without a gallery/artist......
Just my opinion of course, interesting discussion.

Stik Plaques, by eschiff on Jul 26, 2011 13:19:41 GMT 1, i agree, nice to have a conversation on here and not just virtually shout at people.
i agree with your points above, but i think the value of a flipper to an artist is valuable as well. Without people reselling the prints, or without the demand for people reselling prints, an artist work would be limited in its scope.
If ryan sells 12 plaques, and none hit the secondary market it could mean a few things:
1 - only 12 people like the print (so quite little demand) 2 - the 12 people that bought it are massive fans and want to hang on to the print (same as above)
I think if that's the case, that doesn't help either the artist nor the gallery.
With things showing up on the 2ndary market it shows there's quite a bit of interest in the pieces. Which in turn may lead ryan and stik to conclude that more pieces should be made (whether the plaque or another medium) so it really does help both of them.
I agree the gallery really helps in terms of PR, shows, etc...but without the demand for the art, those will be of little consequence.
And again, there's no way everyone who wants a piece can buy it either from the gallery or when it drops. I've sent art, like i'm sure many others have on here, to asia, europe, the states and australia. If there weren't people reselling prints, not as many people could enjoy.
And from a personal standpoint, if i wasn't able to sell prints that i've bought, i wouldn't be able to keep buying prints. It feeds the beast.
So maybe what i'm actually saying is that it's not that a gallery is as bad as a flipper, it's that a flipper is as good as a gallery.

Stik Plaques, by rottenredrooster on Jul 26, 2011 13:24:32 GMT 1, I think it's obvious that there are two types of galleries. Those that support the artist, work alongside them and stick by them and those that jump on the bandwagon when it gets really popular, don't have any contact with the artist and try to squeeze as much cash out of an artwork that they had nothing to do with.

Stik Plaques, by saint on Jul 26, 2011 13:26:16 GMT 1, Interesting points man, and actually i agree in part, the demand for work on the secondary does inflate the demand from source, and so i guess it is good for a gallery, and therefore for an artist. Actually if you look back on the first page of this thread Ryan makes two comments which now seem more interesting....
"someone mention work being flipped- has anyone seen a Stik print being resold ? would love to know if they are and what they are going for."
and
"interesting, i heard from Stik that a gallery/framers in london had resold a single mum AP for ยฃ600!"
so actually that appears to me to be utilising the secondary market to provide hype....

Stik Plaques, by eschiff on Jul 26, 2011 13:31:53 GMT 1, yeah, exactly, when i read those posts by Ryan that's kind of what i was thinking. To me, it reads that he's quite excited about it.
and rooster...that may be true. But you could say the same for people who resell. There are those who do it to make a quick buck (and i'm not saying that in a derogatory way) and those who do it to help buy the next purchase (and support another artist). Actually, there's a third catergory, those of us who are just hopelessly addicted

Stik Plaques, by eschiff on Jul 26, 2011 15:43:37 GMT 1, Good point des. I certainly would not, and am not accusing stik of driving up his prices but there have certainly been cases of artists having friends/relatives buy their work on the secondary Market. At a drewatts auction I went to last year I was introduced to a fella who said he was a cousin of an artist and then watched in bemusement as he bought his cousins canvas for over the estimate.
Unethical? Not sure. Maybe in the long run it helps the artist, or maybe not, but the idea of creating hype isn't limited to galleries and sellers on the 2ndary market.
