SWAP MY 21ST CENTURY LOVE '3/95' FOR YOUR BANKSY, by slowmo on Jun 19, 2007 18:12:34 GMT 1, All three originals at the Exeter event were sold for ยฃ7k. When the guy at the gallery discussed the price with antony, he asked how much should he sell them for, antony said ยฃ7K, guy said are you sure (thinking they should be sold for more), OK ยฃ5K said Micallef. He is really worried abut getting the price right for his work apparently.

SWAP MY 21ST CENTURY LOVE '3/95' FOR YOUR BANKSY, by bobbymeachamjr on Jun 20, 2007 1:26:40 GMT 1, of course demand is high - thats why the prices are where they're at. Its when demand is fueled by speculation is when we're entering into bubble territory. Just look at all these posts. This new modern approach to "accessible" art is shady. Print runs of nearly a thousand in multiple colourways etc etc. In times near the peak of a frenzy - the best decisions are the simplest ones. Be rational. Ask yourself Isnt it crazy that prints, yes prints are going for well over $10000usd ? Oh btw I own 5 signed banksys and I believe the going rates are absurd. To tell you the truth I am waiting for trollies to sell 2-3 of them off as I believe that will be the peak of this insanity.

Agreed. While I love Micallef's work, and own 3 prints myself, there is no way I can deny that there was a lot of hype earlier this year, especially around January when Eyestorm and Opus finally sold 21st Century Love as an individual print. Those prints went fast at GBP 3400+VAT, then Iron Tortoise sold his on Ebay for GBP 4700 I believe. BUT if you watched all of the subsequent 21st prints go on ebay, none of them sold at the asking prices- I know because I was tracking them for months. The most recent went for about the same price as sold by Eyestorm minus VAT (3400 I believe). What does that tell you?
The Laz prints came out in January, at the same peak of this hype, and were the smallest editions of a Micallef print released to date. They did not sell out at the price of GBP 4000+VAT, and you can still get one today. The price was obviously set too high, too soon.
I think Antony is going to continue to improve his art and prices will go up as new fans discover his work. He deserves the success and I look forward to his show in September (I'll be there). But I do think that his work was pushed up in price by Laz with that last set of prints and there was (and still is) too much discussion about the price and availability of his work, and too little about the work itself.

SWAP MY 21ST CENTURY LOVE '3/95' FOR YOUR BANKSY, by slowmo on Jun 20, 2007 9:06:09 GMT 1, The LA show in September is not a done thing yet. It could still not happen. I really wonder what antony thinks of LAZ selling prints for ยฃ4K plus vat. On his shop page he doesn't even list them as a place you can buy prints.
