OK, so I'm getting huge amounts of hate mail via eBay and you're all slagging me off on a forum as well. If id known this thing would have generated so much bile from everyone i would have just binned it. The thing is, i saw the piece when i moved to Peckham in December and i thought it looked like a Banksy piece, in the same style, with the same kind of message and in a suitable place for his work. The Bankable tape appeared a little while ago, i cant remember when exactly but that really clinched it, as it was in the Banksy style font. So i tried to speak to the tenant of the flat above, then got through to the letting agency that manages the property that the door leads to. They put me through to the landlord who agreed to sell the door, provided i replaced it like for like, which i then did at considerable cost. ยฃ400 for a replacement door fitting and ยฃ350 to buy the door in the first place. I was not buying it with a view to selling it, but putting it on my own doorway in my flat, but my landlady took a look at it and said no chance, so i decided to pop it on eBay and see if it was worth something. I'm not an expert, i bought it on a hunch, and i didn't make it myself either. To be honest i only recognize the style of the piece and the font of the text, but there was also a couple of tags ending in B, so i thought it could be real. I've tried to email the Banksy site, and this Lazarides one, but they're both useless and on top of it all I'm getting blazed left right and center for it. The reserve price is only for the amount I've paid for it, and the postage is high because it weighs a ton - so what do you want? He doesn't just do prints you know. The reason he got popular is because of the street work, and while i agree that pieces that are created on walls and paving stones should be left where they are for everyone to enjoy, this one was on a door - IE a non-permanent fixture with a cool piece which had apparently gone unrecognized for what it was. Say what you want but Ive done nothing other than retrieve the piece, and I'm disappointed to have to sell it, but I'm renting and i don't have much choice - i cant keep it in the flat, and i don't have anywhere else.

Bankable ?, by snorky on Mar 30, 2007 16:40:28 GMT 1, I cant see what the fuss is about.
So someone is selling something on Ebay that may/may not be a Banksy - he doesnt state its a Banksy and offers no background apart from what it states in his listing. I can go onto Ebay and take a punt on something in the "style" of Picasso or Grosz without a background history - that my gamble and many many people do this in the hope that they may actually get a real un.
If someone wants to take that punt, then go for it.
The constant sniping and sneering sarcasm is getting to be more annoying than funny. This, combined with the constant in jokes sbout carpet baggers etc grates when its a mantra that is reiterated over an over again - it also loses whaever impact the phrase ever had.
I dont want to get into the "Art/Money/Worth/Value" argument , as its a never ending vortex and there can be no no winner and no right/wrong.
Heres a thought - should this listing have appeared with a note from banksy stating it was indeed his, would that make this a fantastic piece of one off original art ,rather than a laughable ill conceived Graf. scrawl ?
For that vast majority of members, I fear that it indeed might make all the difference in how it is viewed
Addition:
He a chancer and is trying to make money - no more than many of this sites members do, despite their pleas to be into the art and not the capital appreciation - He did answer the questions without any real evasiveness ans posted the answers - many wouldnt do that
With more specific reference to the piece in Question, I would suggest that Camberwell School of art is the origin of the piece than Bristol.
I cant see what the fuss is about.

You meant apart from the title which is "Original Banksy piece c2005" and the description which states "Original Banksy piece on a door from Peckham high street"??
The seller deserves all the crap that's being hurled at them. Cunt.

Bankable ?, by smudger on Apr 1, 2007 1:40:54 GMT 1, Hey now guys, where is the love in the room let alone the elephant?! So its not Banksy but this poor blokes out of pocket. I think joiners who charge ยฃ400 for a door are earning nearly as much as Banksy! And isn't there a lovely poetic moment in the landlord, with what he sees as a vandalised door, getting a phone call out of the blue and being offered a brand new one worth ยฃ400 for free from an angel investor? Ahhh, THERE's the love!

I think its funny that someone has bid, it just shows that people will pay for anything. More than likely the bidder doesnt really have a clue who banksy is. However you have listed under the "BANKSY" title so regardless if you did or didnt state it was a banksy you knew what you were doing.
