Apols. to Rae if theres a really deep and meaningfully serious explanation. Which is fine, but why would anyone pay any more than say a tenna for that? I know i seem to bash Rae a lot (sorry Rae) but i just don't see any value in his work? To me it looks like some guy thats decided to cash in on the gullible street art market.
It's like you go through a check list:
Create/steal a style of work any 10 year old could do (its ok the street art fans will say its "naive"): check!
Throw a few street pieces up, make sure your name is on it and post on the internet for everyone to see: check!
Release a low edition, hand finished screen print, advertise it on a forum, create a bit of hype and watch it sell out: Check!
Sit back and watch while the money rolls in and fools with more money than sense buy up all the crap you put out, with them thinking you may be the next big thing and they can cash in themselves: Check!
Believe in your own hype: Check!
But hey, maybe i'm wrong and the guy's a genius artist? This is just my opinion.

RAE BK ๐บ๐ธ Brooklyn New York Street Artist, by darhart on Jun 4, 2013 13:09:17 GMT 1, Well im glad that some people are at least putting up an argument as to what they like about his work, i often feel debate on the merits of work posted on here is very much lacking. I still maintain that there is nothing on this page a 10 year old couldn't paint (ok maybe not on the scale of some of these "works") and nothing thats really creative or imaginative with anything to say?
As for witty stecils and the like, 99% of that stuff is far from what i find interesting in the street/urban art world (or whatever you want to call it).
I'm not looking to start any arguments but im interested in what are you seeing here that gives his work the merit that clearly i don't give it?
Personally I don't see any skilled/clever/intersting/new technique? I can't see any message/commentary? There's nothing new or original? Other than the one with the trees at the bottom (which is the 1st piece of his i've seen I dont totally dislike) there doesnt seem to be any interesting interaction with the environment? And i don't get any feeling for the work.
I see there are some bold bright colours and if I saw some of these when walking along the street they'd make me smile and thats about all i can get from it. I want more from an artist that sells their work at anything other than bottom end prices.

As I said earlier I could understand that some dislike his work, it depends of what you are looking at in art. Personally I don't have the same point of you as yours, I'm not looking for any message in art, if there is one I try to understand it but if there is no message I will just enjoy or not the work.
You talk about technic, I'm not sure every artist brings a new technic, every artist got there own style but definitely not there own technic. Take banksy, blek le rat, nick walker or Jef aerosol, they all use the same technics and they are great artist, and I'm not sure any of them invented this! Invader use pool ceramic and everybody will admit that all of us could do exactly the same, and he didn't even invent his carracter! But he is a great artist too!
You don't get it, you don't get it, no worries mate, I'm sure that you appreciate artist I don't like and I like artist you don't but please do not try to discredit an artist you don't understand !

RAE BK ๐บ๐ธ Brooklyn New York Street Artist, by stvro22 on Jun 4, 2013 14:17:50 GMT 1, 100% agree with Tinmar. Seems like you have some axe to grind with RAE by trying to write off his work as having no new technique. Really lame debate mate. Doubt it if you've actually looked at his whole body of work either. There are many pieces that do have "messages" (not that I always need one) but others that are more playful and use recycled objects. Hey maybe he's talking about the environment! But according to you it would still have no merit because he didn't invent a "technique".
I'm always up for a good debate when there is one to be had but you're presenting a pretty weak one at the moment.

RAE BK ๐บ๐ธ Brooklyn New York Street Artist, by Graham H on Jun 4, 2013 15:16:05 GMT 1, Hey..its horses for courses to be honest.. I generally dont get involved in anyway in these debates that seem to pop up for different artists weekly.. and, each one blows out with the simple end result... different people like different things.. pretty straight forward really.
I do value Tinmars point about why I like all the art I like.. I dont look at any depth in what art means.. I buy it because it makes me smile, catches my eye, or I feel will look good as I walk past a certain place that I have in mind for it.. that said, when I do get some art delivered to me, it doesnt meet up to those one or all of those 3 simple things.. and I do wonder what on earth I bought it for, and it then gets filed away.. only to be either traded, kept or, left there, and funnily enough got back out and put up somewhere else..
Every day and every place can give a each piece a differnet feel.. hence why I spend a lot of my time moving things around and around and hanging in different places..
Thats my view on this debate.. which will no doubt may be ridiculed by those people who look at pictures in great depth.
This is where the Rae stuff fits in with me, it makes me smile..

Please try and read and understand my posts before comenting, you say you're "up for a good debate" but to do this you need to take in what has first been said. I'll try and make it simple for you.
I've at no point said he or any artist has to invent a new technique.
What i gave was a list of things that I look for in a piece of art that i think would give it merit.
Inventing a new technique is an example. It doesn't have to have a new technique, it's just one thing that could be enough to make a painting interesting.
Following so far?
On that same line i also suggested that having a skilled technique could be enough to make a painting interesting. It could be an old technique that many artists over the years have used, nothing new at all but has been used with a degree of skill showing artistic quality to lift it above the norm. But even then it need have no new technique, or skillfull technique, read on!
On that same line i gave other examples of technique that i think would make the painting have merit. I separtated these sugggestion with a slash "\" meaning any one of them is valid.
Still with me?
But, even if the painting has none of the above, no great technique of any note at all that still doesnt mean its a meritless painting! Yes thats right, i then went on to point out a whole host of other merit worthy things ANY ONE OF WHICH would be enough to give it merit.
Phew this is hard work, i've explained those few lines and thats enough for me, but you get the idea dont you?

I'm always up for a good debate when there is one to be had but you're presenting a pretty weak one at the moment.
