RAE BK ๐บ๐ธ Brooklyn New York Street Artist, by Manty on Dec 8, 2013 20:29:12 GMT 1, When something is limited, advertised as such and sold as such you should not change it. Prints arent the only things limited... what about those phones that sold in Miami yesterday or any of the old Kaws toys - let's just double the number that were put out there. People wake up! Increasing editions just makes for no credibility. When credibility is gone - just try and get it back. One of my favorite prints of all time I absolutely hate and cant look at anymore because the artist is such a p*ick and wanted to re-release it in a new edition. No matter how he tried to explain it and backtrack all of what he said when it was purchased about it being the only release that would ever happen and never printed again - to me it was just for the money. Thats a fair comment, and not wanting to be argumentative, but why does it matter if the artist you mentioned releases another edition and makes some more money
if its popular, why not do some more in a different colour or whatever?
As a collector of these limited edition things, I don't think it would bother me.
For example i have a coloured banksy trolley, edition of 750? if he released it tomorrow in green, i'd want one to go with my blue, if i didn't get one then so be it, it will go on my wish list
or am I missing something?

RAE BK ๐บ๐ธ Brooklyn New York Street Artist, by tab1 on Dec 8, 2013 20:29:34 GMT 1, I read the email from Chris after his message in this forum about the negative opinion of the 75% of the buyers who responded, and I voted for the extension of the edition. I add I appreciate very much how Brooklynite and expecially Chris works, and after today I confirm it for sure. Finally in my opinion the only collectors really entitled to receive something like a PP of the book are those who bought something from the show.
I think the preview went out to all previous buyers of works from the gallery?so don't think it will be flipped?
I bought the book and responded yes to a bigger addition for the book think it benefits the artist more getting his work out there.

I agree, and infact I voted, even if too late, to extend the edition as you did. But considering that some of the buyers disagreed I think that at least who bought something from the show should be entitled to buy the book. But the unsigned edition, as somebody suggested, would be a very good thing too.

I am talking bout identical release - just a bit bigger. No color changes. Not all art is change a color and release it. Skies dont always look good purple.
I have a color trolleys too... so Banksy releases 750 more exactly the same, numbering 751 to 1500. You are perfectly cool with that?
Sorry I am outta this conversation.
Rational though is often lost in mob mentality.

RAE BK ๐บ๐ธ Brooklyn New York Street Artist, by johnnyh on Dec 8, 2013 21:01:50 GMT 1, think this is a slightly different situation though as it had not been released and as per Chris mail a mistake had been made. So it does actually mean that a number of people who actually bought the originals from his show do not get the book of the show. I think the actual intention of the book was to be for his customers of the show hence the concept of the pre notice mail. Obviously an error made which meant it went on general release be for these people my self included had a chance to respond. So he is not creating another edition later that's the same just increasing the number due to the error. My self I think they should just have increased the number and if you did not want they could give people their money back. do as mentioned appreciate them being honest over the error but it is a bummer for people

Then those who bought one first now gets something better (signed book) and those who was let down by Brooklynite will be happy Both 'Word of Mouth' and Snubnose Limited Editions will be signed.

RAE BK ๐บ๐ธ Brooklyn New York Street Artist, by BKBOI on Dec 8, 2013 21:12:20 GMT 1, As a book collector, there are 2nd and 3rd printings of very popular books. They could've done it that way so that they dont have to ask permission from the 50 that bought. The first ed people still feels exclusivity and the other people who want the book gets a copy.
I did reply to the email and said that I am fine with whatever the gallery decides on.

That's a great idea. A pp of the book for he people who bought from the show. Surely the 75% wouldn't argue with that?

If you were to say 50 will be increased to 300 or so then I would think twice. I think Brooklynite did the best thing keeping it at 50. Should be expecting to see these on the Bay any minute now.

They obviously are reading this and they did the right thing and left it up to the decision of the people who previously bought the book. There was an overwhelming no extra copies feedback and they made a decision. I also bought the book and said I had no problem with them running off fifty more but either the people on the forums are the only ones who feel this way and the majority don't use the forums or are keeping quiet said no or people are saying one thing and vocalized different privately. I don't imagine the gallery or Chris need to weigh in on this again as they have done plenty already and 100% did the right thing the whole way through.

A mistake was made and apologies were given publicly. Chris is too notch and I stand behind him 100%.

RAE BK ๐บ๐ธ Brooklyn New York Street Artist, by duckyhoward on Dec 9, 2013 3:34:24 GMT 1, I swooped and picked one on the books up yesterday but have just asked the gallery to refund me on my purchase as I am not a super huge RAE fan and i am hoping for some good karma (and probably more luck then anything) for an upcoming show in the new year that i am looking to make a purchase at. Looks like there are plenty of bigger fans than me out there. So there might be one floating around (if you are really, really quick)
I also never got a message asking if the edition should be extended, reprinted etc. I would have been happy for an extension or 2nd edition (Especially when it comes to books).
Apologies in advance to the gallery if their inbox get hit with people chasing this one.
All 100% above board - Chris from Gallery can confirm all of the above if necessary.

RAE BK ๐บ๐ธ Brooklyn New York Street Artist, by morgan on Dec 9, 2013 3:49:45 GMT 1, Just to play devils advocate here...can someone please explain the difference to between a LE Book vs a LE Print? Kit? Toy? VNA Issue? <insert anything limited you collect>? I personally see no difference at all between the mediums, they are all a collectors item period. Just because it is a book does not make it any different than a print, why should it? Books get second editions? Okay, and a ton of prints get second editions and so forth and collectors get pissed off. In all honesty it should have been a question of making it open or limited, they choose limited. 50 more is only going to make 50 more people happy and that would just make matters worse for people that missed out on the second offering. Also, god only knows what that would do to their inbox if by huge demand = possible extending editions.
At the end of the day I could care less about 50 more but from the bigger picture/principle it really does not make sense to me, so they made the right choice in the end IMO. /my .02
And 100% kudos for Chris publicly putting himself and brooklynite out there, very top notch as said above. If nothing was said it would have been just like any normal day "argg I missed my mail", "I got gutted" "eff me I am in a diff timezone" and the world would still turn.

That's nice of you. Looks like a few people on here have the holiday spirit.
I think a paperback edition is a perfect compromise. It's done all the time. I also think they underestimated the demand for the RAE book in the first place.
I swooped and picked one on the books up yesterday but have just asked the gallery to refund me on my purchase as I am not a super huge RAE fan and i am hoping for some good karma (and probably more luck then anything) for an upcoming show in the new year that i am looking to make a purchase at. ย Looks like there are plenty of bigger fans than me out there. ย So there might be one floating around (if you are really, really quick)ย I also never got a message asking if the edition should be extended, reprinted etc. I would have been happy for an extension or 2nd edition (Especially when it comes to books).ย Apologies in advance to the gallery if their inbox get hit with people chasing this one.ย All 100% above board - Chris from Gallery can confirm all of the above if necessary.ย That's nice of you. Looks like a few people on here have the holiday spirit. I think a paperback edition is a perfect compromise. It's done all the time. I also think they underestimated the demand for the RAE book in the first place.

RAE BK ๐บ๐ธ Brooklyn New York Street Artist, by nrgball on Dec 9, 2013 17:45:32 GMT 1, They should make more. That show was spectacular. Rae's installation was one of the best uses of space and creative art projects I've seem in years.

You're right johnnyh, they are true gents! I wanted that book and would really appreciate an unsigned edition, so the signed ones could keep their "value" and other people like me could enjoy a nice book! What you say Chris? BROOKLYNITE and how is there no regular edition?!

RAE BK ๐บ๐ธ Brooklyn New York Street Artist, by Hairbland on Dec 11, 2013 0:20:52 GMT 1, Been traveling and reading the kerfluffle on my iPhone. I often wish it wasn't so difficult to get these limited items that seem to sell out immediately...I've been thwarted on at least a half dozen items over the last 2 years. I also find myself jealous that despite living in Brooklyn amidst NYC's happening art scene so many great shows happen in London, not to mention the print fairs that seem to constantly occur. And of course Mr. Bingo! Granted October was Banksy month in NYC but it's not like he gave me a print!
But I was bummed that I didn't get the RAE print from a month or two ago largely because some people got the code/link/whatever and passed it around immediately to friends so that other's on RAE's list (like myself) never had a chance.
I was surprised Saturday night at 8:30pm NYC time to get an email regarding the book, blinked, and bought one at 8:33pm. I also did the math, and an edition of 50 books at $40 = $2,000 minus cost of manufacturing...not a very lucrative situation for the artist and gallery...in fact unless things have changed in this case the artist and gallery are one and the same, correct me if I'm wrong. Plus the Paypal charge of about 3% per transaction.
I didn't buy one of his recent originals from the show, but I did go to the show twice...the opening and later with friends I turned on to the artist. So I think I'm as entitled to the book as someone who bought a work from it.
It would be interesting to see how many would pay for a 2nd edition that wasn't signed, stamped and with a surprise insert. Have people pay first, if enough do then make it, like a Kickstarter campaign. If another 50 want, then a second edition. If nobody wants a book if not signed/stamped with insert then no book - I don't think the Brooklynite Gallery is swimming in money. For the record I told Chris I had no problem with expanding it, I suppose I was in the 25%.

He said he's selling his work at a discount to help her out. Because I'm on a shitty phone I don't know how to put the posting on here but it said email to rae@wordofmouth@gmail.com
