JOSÉ PARLÁ Character Gestures September 9 - October 22, 2011 937 N. La Cienega / Los Angeles / CA / 90069
Opening Reception: Friday, September 9, 6 – 9 PM
Character Gestures is a solo reveal of José Parlá’s latest body of work. Comprised of paintings, mono-transfers and installations, this exhibition builds on the artist’s earlier work that dealt with the concept of psychogeography and depicted distressed architectural surfaces layered with calligraphic text. While he continues to broach the idea of how we experience urban landscapes and the visual language of mark making, the shift within Character Gestures stems from a deeper engagement with process and abstraction.
The notion of “character” is as much about text, integrity, and specific traits, as it is a literal nod to Parlá’s performance, wherein he assumes the role of hypothetical pedestrians who interact with marred city walls, as he creates the work. “Gesture,” encompasses the ideas of movement, communication, and demonstration, and is mutually respectful of the artist’s accidental and calculated actions when applying medium to surface.
With Parlá’s new paintings, as seen in No Return, Here Again, 2011, marks mix with textures, bright colors, and media, yet the process is as involved and significant as the visual outcome. Additionally, a large-scale installation fills the central gallery space – the freestanding sculptural translation of classroom memories opens a conversation with the surrounding paintings. In a collection of work on paper, which Parlá refers to as “mono-transfers,” he experiments with a form of frottage, documenting his new paintings via the impressions they leave on paper.
Character Gestures exemplifies Parlá’s deftness at technical execution; the complexity of layering, combined with erasure, still manages a translucent effect. His fluency in visual communication is mindful of the fact that any emotion or memory that attempts physicality can only serve, in reality, as an abbreviation of its original essence. He mitigates this condition through his poetic and individualized form of aesthetic dialogue, while navigating the art historic doctrine of Abstraction.

More likely to be a book than a print I should say... He was never going to do a print, but then he did three with Elms, so you can never say never, but they were a part of a print show he did with Elms, and he worked long and hard on them...

Great, thanks for the update. Definitely one to look out for, although a signed one would be even better ;D

JOSÉ PARLÁ Los Angeles 9/9 -10/22, by kingofprussia on Sept 8, 2011 16:47:57 GMT 1, I contacted the gallery about pricing on the monotransfers. There are a couple of the stronger pieces (imo) that are still available. 8500 USD (framed). Kind of steep imo considering they are not paintings but rather transfers from the original paintings. They are cool don't get me wrong b/c they are involved in the process but I wasn't expecting that type of price tag. A bunch have sold so who am I to say. Its just that for a few more grand you can get an original watercolor in the aftermarket which if I had the coin would be route I would take.

JOSÉ PARLÁ Los Angeles 9/9 -10/22, by sand on Sept 10, 2011 8:21:56 GMT 1, Great video foreman, thanks for sharing that, was that Kaws is the background in the black baseball cap?!
Really like the new body of work on canvas...but don't understand why anyone would buy a mono transfer.
I think they're interesting to look at to understand the process of how the larger canvas works are made but don't work as stand alone pieces.
Would be kinda cool if you had the mono transfer for the painting you owned..but otherwise it all seems a bit pointless and I was surprised they were for sale.
Show looked great, really like the use of colour.
This is my fave piece..Miming the Mediterranean
Would love to be able to check this show out in person!

Good eye Sands!... KAWS makes a cameo twice in my video
It was a lovely show, the scale and depth of the artwork is very impressive. and the color palette felt very fresh. My favorite was the diptych piece at the :29 sec mark..

went to the show last night...amazing work both on canvas and mono tranfers
until you seen the depth and texture on some of the monos in person how could you knock it? especially when the monos were 8k and the canvases were 50k-100k
check the theater syntax 2 or character gestures 2...they might change your mind
the real joke was gucci kaws not signing the homies graff book but parla went all out
