Ai Weiwei held by Chinese Communist Party, by Chris Keegan on Apr 17, 2011 16:10:35 GMT 1, Sad story. Dont think the west can really do much about it. Just have to hope he gathers more support in China. And that the many stories like his don't get suppressed as easily as they have been in the past.

I disagree. I think outside pressure can make a difference and has in the past. Amnesty International has shown over and over again that outside pressure can have a major impact on shady governments (US government being the obvious exception).
The bigger issue here is that the rest of the world has to stop allowing human rights abuse everywhere. This sort of thing shouldn't happen in the first place.
Will real action happen? That is another question, but I don't think there is any doubt that outside pressure can help.

I hope you are right mike. Human rights abuses should be exposed and can embarrass governments. I just wonder how much of this stuff is getting through to the Chinese people. Google seemed to not do very well "working" with the government there. WeiWei is just the tip of the iceberg i guess. He is relatively high profile.

maybe the bigger issue is that the rest of the world has to stop perpetrating human rights abuse everywhere. Very few countries could give lessons on the subject...

So true. We need to fight human rights abuse at home where ever your home is.

Per capita I think the US still has it on China in terms of executions.
