Andipa Catalogues Rip Off..., by beejoir1 on May 28, 2007 19:48:58 GMT 1, I too am getting really sick of the quick buck mentality of it all, everyone solely in it for that ought to set up their own greedy capitilist money grabbing con trick forum and keep it off this one. Deep down everyone that owns a banksy is in it for the 'bucks' now to be honest and you can't say that not true, dont tell me that he is popular just for his art, because alot of it is unoriginal. If you want original graffiti before banksy look through 'the art of rebellion' book. This will show you that stuff done ten years ago is being re-hashed now and some absolute idiots are buying ripped off ideas. If he was popular just for his art, 600 prints would not sell out in 2 minutes. end of story.
Sorry but thats a crock of shit!
I walked into POW a couple of years ago and bough 5 Banksy prints, with no notion that they would ever be worth a penny more than I paid for them. The majority of people who care about the value of prints are the people who buy to sell on a few days/weeks/months later, not because they like the art!

What else is Banksy known for other than his art?

selling for alot of money is probably more than what he does now.
If he sprayed a dog turd it would sell for thousands.

Andipa Catalogues Rip Off..., by finsburyparkranger on May 28, 2007 20:14:52 GMT 1, Where did that thread go about the best none banksy street art? I can't find it? I think we should keep that thread going. Anyone got an idea on where it is? Lets get back to the point and start paying hommage to some walls. Also a handy thread for our 2007 banksy.info award ceremony. ;D

Andipa Catalogues Rip Off..., by tomhills1 on May 28, 2007 20:15:53 GMT 1, what i'm about to say is not aimed at anyone in particular: if you enjoy the art and work of the artist banksy, then please continue to contribute to this forum in a mostly positive way and feel free to enter in to any debate,no matter how heated it may get, so long as your argument is related to the art this man produces.
if your only notable contribution is to try and justify your underhand tactics and devious ability to sleight the truth to your personal gain, then for me, you can f*ck right off.
if you want to talk money, investments and profit go and log on to the FT forum or equivalent. if you purely want to come and start a row,go down the kebab house at midnight and have it like a real man. we're all rocky at the end of a phone line and a keyboard.
enough has been written now in not only the subject of andipa catalogues, which BTW are available from amy repp via art@andipa.com, as well as the general principle of making money off the back of a charitable aim. no further comments are really going to enhance the debate so i think this should be the end of it, everyone has had their say in my view and anyone logging on to read this now will pretty much get the broad picture. i'm sure pimps all over the world actually pay their girls, doesn't mean they're not living off immoral earnings.
if it were not for the fact that there are a vast number of people out there who are unaware of certain info in relation to banksy, then i don't think the vast majority of us would have bothered to comment on the subject. it makes me wonder why some people even bother coming on here?
jboy, if you'renot bothered about -respect then why do you make such a big deal of it? also try answering a question with a sensible answer rather than calling people mentally-disabled slurs. also, we all know banksy is a machine - no bubble burst there sweetheart, courtesy of jo brooks PR. maybe you and your nathan barley types can go and concentrate on the next flash in the pan.
ratboy, i know all about warchild thanks, been to gigs in aid of them and bought the two albums that came out in their benefit amongst other things.
if you're going to post, maybe try and contribute to a reasoned discussion rather than a: justifying your actions and b: trying to give a lecture while not bothering to see the other side of the coin.
forum bully, over and out

Andipa Catalogues Rip Off..., by johnerotten on May 28, 2007 20:54:11 GMT 1, "everyone" is a bold statement and almost always a crock of shit.
i wish banksy's prints were not 500 US a piece. that way i could own the five prints i want: J & J, Flag, Media, Trollies, and Happy Choppers. Instead, i bought a Sepia I couldn't afford and sank further into debt.
now i will have to deal with trading/selling to afford the prints i want. a big pain in the ass if you ask me. the only way i could even dream of owning more than one print would be to acquire a signed and sell/trade for the unsigned prints i want. on paper i am worth more than negative $40k, but i live ghetto fabulous ;D
yeah, i keep it real.
i do think alot of sales go to carpet baggers who sell other crap and don't care about the art. i also think there are alot of fans. some of them keep their prints, some sell/trade to get others. i'm new to this and just figuring it out myself.
if i can get the prints i want on my walls without defaulting to my lenders than will be a happy man and won't be bothered by daily, weekly, monthly price fluctuations on Banksy prints.
of course i'm not an idiot or a liar either. if owned anything that tripled in value i would be stoked. only a dumby wouldn't. but again, if i could have those prints without destroying my credit i wouldn't think about selling them for a long time or unless there was a serious period of desperation. there are bigger priorities you know? ailing parents, spouses, children, keeping a roof over your head, eating.
you gotta keep it real.
I too am getting really sick of the quick buck mentality of it all, everyone solely in it for that ought to set up their own greedy capitilist money grabbing con trick forum and keep it off this one.

Andipa Catalogues Rip Off..., by johnerotten on May 28, 2007 21:32:36 GMT 1, quentin tarantino rips off sergio leone, japanese yakuza films, japanese samurai films, and elmore leonard novels amongst other things.
One of the surest tests [of the superiority or inferiority of a poet] is the way in which a poet borrows. Immature poets imitate; mature poets steal; bad poets deface what they take, and good poets make it into something better, or at least something different. The good poet welds his theft into a whole of feeling which is unique, utterly different than that from which it is torn; the bad poet throws it into something which has no cohesion. A good poet will usually borrow from authors remote in time, or alien in language, or diverse in interest. Eliot, T.S., โPhilip Massinger,โ The Sacred Wood, New York: Bartleby.com, 2000.
In his essay on Philip Massinger, T.S. Eliot makes an argument that mature, strong poets use other peopleโs works in a transformative manner that contributes something new to society and culture. He does not argue that โstealingโ someone elses works is appropriate or justified as a means to the end. He seems to argue that poets and authors can use other peopleโs writings as a base for their works as long as the reuse takes the work to a new place, and introduces it to a new audience.
Like Tarantino and his films, Banksy "takes his art work, borrowed or not, to a new place and introduces it to a new audience."
What was so original about Warhol's soupcans? One could argue Warhol stole that from Campbell's Soup.
I don't see anyone doing what Banksy is doing except for those cheaply imitating him. Although Blek le Rat inspired Banksy, Banksy's work looks ALOT different then Blek's IMO.
You could argue he ripped off Warhol with the Kate Moss but according to T.S. Elliot, he would still be considered a "great artist" if he took the art to a new level and introduced it to a new audience which i think he does precisly with the Kate Moss...basically the Marilyn of our generation (if we even have one).
