Banksy in Australia?, by Fred Quimby Fan on Nov 6, 2011 12:13:17 GMT 1, Just come back from there. I met ROA as he was finishing up a giant 3 animals on the side of a building there, pretty much the first one you come up to once you leave the ferry to get there from Circular Quay. I heard some stories about Banksy and Ben Eine and their 2002/3 visit to Sydney from a couple of local artists who showed them around back in the day and helped them with their location scouting.
Didn't hear whether Banksy was in town. If he is, I hope he does a new piece at the exhibition as the his stuff on display are mainly prints and not originals.
I plan to visit again - probably on Mon/Tues to go see ROA again - what a great bloke and I filmed him for about 1 hour while he worked on finishing a bird - truly amazing - I will try and post it soon.

Banksy in Australia?, by Deleted on Nov 7, 2011 6:20:25 GMT 1, I really am struggling to get excited about an exhibition that's based on a personal collection, if an impressive collection at that.
For those wondering if banksy would be in town for a show that has nothing to do with him or pow, the answer is categorically no.

Banksy in Australia?, by Fred Quimby Fan on Nov 7, 2011 10:56:13 GMT 1, I've been keeping my ear to the ground - no one I know has mentioned Banksy being in town and I know some of Sydney's finest street artists who know him.
I have to say, I was disappointed with the 'Oi You!' collection of Banksy's as none were really one-offs and it seemed more like an archive of POW releases apart from the wooden turret tower.
Got photos, will get off me arse soon to post.
Coolest thing was ROA's works and seeing him work his magic and meeting him halfway through, chatting. Classy bloke.

The show is actually much much much bigger than the Oi!You collection. It's Australia's biggest street art festival ever, and the Oi!You collection is just a small part of it. There are literally hundreds and hundreds of art pieces from knowns (Lister, ROA, Kid Zoom) and unknowns, so it wasnt a long shot by any standards. It's set on an old industrial island and is probably the most amazing art festival / exhibition i've ever seen...

Banksy in Australia?, by Fred Quimby Fan on Nov 7, 2011 14:19:09 GMT 1, Hey guys, don't get me wrong. I like Banksy as much as the next guy and on the whole, Outpost is a great day out if you like the creativity of street art and the graf-world. BUT all I'm saying is the pieces of Banksy, we've seen before. I was hoping that there would be a couple of big unique pieces - especially now building on the rumours of him being in Sydney and hanging out with Ben Frost.
Also agreed - it is much bigger than the 'Oi You!' collection. The biggest pity and poke in the eye for me is that many of the classic old-skoolers of the graf-world out from Melbourne and Sydney were not invited to participate in this festival/show, which is a real shame - but they were invited, odly enough, to the opening party. It's a bit like the equivolent of not asking TOX or SUB or one of the UK old-boys to big do in London that's launching street art. You know what I mean...
I've also heard that Eine is out here - although I'm not sure how welcome he'll be with some of the crew he hung out here with in 2002 when he visited here with Banksy... (there's a story behind that one)

Banksy in Australia?, by Wearology on Nov 8, 2011 11:00:47 GMT 1, I am here in Australia for the show and it seems that the street art movement is alive and well in Melbourne. I went by the DFACE show earlier today and saw all red dots next to DFACE's work. The gallery also had a bunch of Hirst's available and an up and coming artist from Australia that looks like he is getting ready to pop. I wouldn't be surprised in Banksy is in town for the Sydney Art Festival - I just got a feeling a little birdie made mention -stay tuned !!!!

Banksy in Australia?, by Wearology on Nov 10, 2011 9:42:41 GMT 1, I spent several hours looking at a one lane street covered in graffiti. I felt that people were wondering what type of drugs I was on. I just couldn't get enough of that street. The Australian street art scene is alive and well. This was the only Banksy that I recognized and it is probably a few years old and someone tagged over part of it.
