SHELL BLOOD FOR OIL ON EBAY, by bobbyt23 on Jul 13, 2007 22:36:06 GMT 1, I agree with you Verbalkint. I buy pieces I like.
I just wish I could afford more of the pieces I like. But many of them are now out of my league. Them's the breaks though. You get some stuff you like others you dont.
It all comes down to what you can afford and I would always urge people buying for "investment" to seriously consider their decision. Nothing is certain in this world so if you cant afford to lose it dont risk it.

SHELL BLOOD FOR OIL ON EBAY, by verbalkint on Jul 13, 2007 22:38:38 GMT 1, And whilst i know that Chris prefers his work to go to people who wont sell it on, I personally like flippers, without them i wouldnt have half my collection. I know its s**t when you miss out on a 'must have' print and have to fork out loads more on ebay for it, but can you imagine how s**t it would be if you missed out on a 'must have' print and that was the end of it, no chance at all to ever get your hands on a copy? that would be worse You can look at it in another way... if flippers (the "I don't give a sh!t about the piece, I just want to turn it around for a quick buck even before I've received it" kind) didn't exist, then perhaps you would have been able to snag one for yourself when it went on sale, no? Personally, I think the blatant flippers (the aforementioned kind) are a huge insult to any artists' integrity. They're totally using the artists' fame/skill/talent/ideas to make money for themselves. If I were an artist, it would be like saying to my face, "I don't care about you or your 'talent', I just want to make money off of you." That's like you climbing on top of my head and taking a sh!t. But of course, I realize that's a very idealistic viewpoint, and the real world has many other variables, too many to consider in many instances. Flipping has a lot to do with the increase in value of artworks, and perhaps many artists wouldn't have gained as much recognition if flipping didn't exist. Typical double-edged sword, huh... Just my two cents, sorry if it ended up being a rant ;D
i understand what you are saying, but the world is not made up of good and evil, light and dark, black and white, fans and flippers.
For example, i bought the Ian francis print 'Devouring bunny' because i liked it and it gave me a semi!! I paid ยฃ275 from RP gallery, now lets say all of a sudden everyone goes crazy apeshit bonkers for ian francis and his prints are going on ebay for ยฃ4000 a pop, then i would sell it in a heart beat, because i could use that ยฃ4000 to buy some other stuff i really like
There will be some people who bought this print and now they have seen it going for about a grand will just not be able to resist selling it, its just not worth a grand to them. Obviously there will have been those who sat there all weekend to get one to flip, but you could say that they hung around all weekend so they could make some money and deserve to get one just like everyone else, or maybe they did buy one to sell, but only because there is another print they love which is a grand and they only have ยฃ200 in the bank, its a good way to get to the print they love.
then of course there are the guys who specialise in getting every new release just to make money, and yes that isnt a nice thing to do and obviously im no fan of these people, the problem is you cannot just tar everyone who decides to sell this print with the same brush, you cannot know their reasons.
It funny, my respect was 16 yesterday and it has gone down 7 points. that is what happens on here when you express an opinion.

SHELL BLOOD FOR OIL ON EBAY, by carlito on Jul 13, 2007 23:12:54 GMT 1, wise words verbal u hit the nail on the head with many of your points
for my money I'd choose Beejoir's work above all those 'established' artists any day of the week - because his work means more and that at the end of the day is all that matters - my personal taste
flipping / selling on has been gone over many times on this board and it's never as simple as good and evil / right and wrong, many shades of grey ... i totally understand the need to sell to buy, and deciding another piece is of more value

SHELL BLOOD FOR OIL ON EBAY, by Strange Al on Jul 13, 2007 23:49:46 GMT 1, Verbal - My basic point is one which I think you agree with: "buy what you like and spend what you can afford to lose". I have quoted this mantra many a time, including in a post earlier this evening, and absolutely live by it.
For fear of repeating myself, however much someone likes a piece of art I don't know many people who can spend a ยฃ1K without considering the residual value of that work. You just have to ask yourself what will it be worth if I'm ever forced to sell this piece? I don't consider this a question of investment (although arguably it is), but more one of financial necessity.
Unfortunately, reputation and where an artist has exhibited is a major factor in determining what the residual value of a particular piece of art is likely to be. At least in the traditional art markets. The bottom end of the street art market pays little regard for this, which is arguably a very good thing. You could call it a meritocracy - you come up with a good piece of art and people are willing to pay good prices for it. But if you're looking at the long term career of an artist and the long term value of their works, that artist is going to have to transcend the confines of the street art scene. The artist's achieving the greatest success and increase in values (Chris aside), have all made in roads into the traditional markets - Banksy, Mic, Neate, Fairey. They've all been painting and exhibiting for years and they all have something unique about their work.
I truly hope that Chris will join the list one day - he's a top bloke and deserves all his success. Though IMO at this point in his career he still has a long way to go. Even with the best agent in the world, I think you'd have some difficulty selling beejoir into the traditional art circles at this stage in his career.
Given my respect for Chris and his work, I really don't wish to start dissecting SBFO on the forum. I will say however that I listed the contemporary artists that I did not only because of their reputations, but also because I think they've all produced works which are both conceptually more innovative and more skillfully executed than SBFO. Therefore, for me it's not a choice between: 1) a great piece by an artist without a reputation; and 2) a bad piece by an artist with a reputation. I just think there are better things available in the market for the same money (both artistically and in terms of long term financial security).
Finally, in case you're wondering, I haven't given you any - respect recently. I'm all in favour of differing views and a bit of debate.

SHELL BLOOD FOR OIL ON EBAY, by verbalkint on Jul 14, 2007 0:11:29 GMT 1, I never thought you had negged me, i dont think you are so childish
I do appreciate what you are saying with buy what you can afford to lose, but everyone is thinking about this the wrong way. Everyone is sayin 'ooooohh when the banksy bubble bursts some people are going to get shafted'. I do not think that any artist within this scene will have their prices go down over any 6 month period. yes you get dips, like adam neates went to ยฃ2500, then back down to ยฃ1700, now hovering around ยฃ2100, but you just watch them piss past the ยฃ3000 mark by august, then past ยฃ4500 by christmas and ยฃ5000 next year at this time, maybe more. Images are definative, people either like them or dont like them, or maybe love them or maybe hate them. But if you like an image now, the chances are you will like it in 20 years time. Art has scenes and trends like anything, but this art scene is comperable to the brit pop scene of the mid 90's, you got your heavyweights like oasis and blur who had long careers (banksy and micallef) you had your pretender to the throne pulp (adam neate) you had the old masters coming back on the scene the stone roses (blek, shephard) then you had loads of smaller bands coming through (gene, sleeper, cast, northern uproar, menswear, shed seven) who releaesed the odd good song, but on the whole were not as good as the bigger bands (bast, mantis, blu, insect)
but then just as the scene was getting a bit samey the verve came along (beejoir) and created a huge buzz again. whenever there is a scene there are a glut of things from that scene. look at the number of new prints released, i mean seriously, how many f**king pictures can you get on your walls? I bet hundreds of people on these forums have scores of prints under their beds that will never get on the walls (i am guilty of that!)
My point is that the big boys of this scene are here to stay (banksy, micallef, adam neate) I just cannot see their prices going down, Some of the artist will fade away, in a few years time you will look at your print collection and think 'i cannot believe i bought that' and you will laugh at yourself, but i just do not see Beejoir in that catagory, I see him being a genuine top 5 artist and a genuine contender for the throne. I dont think you can deny that there is no other artist outside of the big 3 who could release a print and have it selling for almost 1000% more within a week of it going on sale? I think that is pretty unique. Beejoir has proved this week to everyone that he commands a higher price than Dface and mantis and is the one artist from the chasing pack who is going straight into the big leagues

actually, if you are selling at auction you only get one bid more than what the 2nd highest bidder was willing to pay, so you really need 2 people to be willing to spend alot to get a good result.
When beejoirs greed print came on ebay i bid ยฃ1001 at the last moment and won it for ยฃ514!! I was well pleased cos i really did want that print quite badly. The only problem is that now i feel i am ยฃ500 up on what i 'should' have spent, so i tell myself that for the next 'have to have' piece, i can go ยฃ500 over budget!! it is nice when you win for less than you bid though

LMAO.. this is just so so wrong.. but I'd have to write 4 pages of verbal to cover just how wrong it is. This is a public forum..and people should hear other points of view. Beej being a member here makes that a tad difficult no ?.. but really.. this is close to fantasy wishfullfillment. You just spanked 10k on someone who's made 3 ok prints and one produced good adbusters image... (look at stencil revolution, there's a thousand good images).. but spending 10k and then ranting on about how Beej is the next big thing, etc etc, smacks of desperation on your part.
I sincerly hope you like this work in 20 years time, cos to be honest, the posters I had 20 years ago are s**t .
1000+ quid for SBFO is laughable.. IMO
sorry Chris
* Edit.. feel free to jump in this discussion people. Needs a bit of balanced discussion maybe. Beej, we need an interview what are your thoughts on it ?
** ok, thought about it a bit more. And fuck it.. anyone who spends 10k on this type of work and imagery, then Respect + !
*** But maybe a bit less hype would help us all, including Beej.
Peace

Yeah I hope not as well, I don't expect to be able to afford an original but I'd still like the chance to not buy one ;D

SHELL BLOOD FOR OIL ON EBAY, by carlito on Jul 14, 2007 10:21:02 GMT 1, I never thought you had negged me, i dont think you are so childish I do appreciate what you are saying with buy what you can afford to lose, but everyone is thinking about this the wrong way. Art has scenes and trends like anything, but this art scene is comperable to the brit pop scene of the mid 90's, you got your heavyweights like oasis and blur who had long careers (banksy and micallef) you had your pretender to the throne pulp (adam neate) you had the old masters coming back on the scene the stone roses (blek, shephard) then you had loads of smaller bands coming through (gene, sleeper, cast, northern uproar, menswear, shed seven) who releaesed the odd good song, but on the whole were not as good as the bigger bands (bast, mantis, blu, insect) but then just as the scene was getting a bit samey the verve came along (beejoir) and created a huge buzz again. whenever there is a scene there are a glut of things from that scene. look at the number of new prints released, i mean seriously, how many f**king pictures can you get on your walls? I bet hundreds of people on these forums have scores of prints under their beds that will never get on the walls (i am guilty of that!) My point is that the big boys of this scene are here to stay (banksy, micallef, adam neate) I just cannot see their prices going down, Some of the artist will fade away, in a few years time you will look at your print collection and think 'i cannot believe i bought that' and you will laugh at yourself, but i just do not see Beejoir in that catagory, I see him being a genuine top 5 artist and a genuine contender for the throne. I dont think you can deny that there is no other artist outside of the big 3 who could release a print and have it selling for almost 1000% more within a week of it going on sale? I think that is pretty unique. Beejoir has proved this week to everyone that he commands a higher price than Dface and mantis and is the one artist from the chasing pack who is going straight into the big leagues LMAO.. this is just so so wrong.. but I'd have to write 4 pages of verbal to cover just how wrong it is. IMO sorry Chris * Edit.. feel free to jump in this discussion people. Needs a bit of balanced discussion maybe. Beej, we need an interview what are your thoughts on it ? ** ok, thought about it a bit more. And f**k it.. anyone who spends 10k on this type of work and imagery, then Respect + ! *** But maybe a bit less hype would help us all, including Beej. Peace
Nu I'm no where near as 'art savvy' as a number of u guys on here, did u all do fine art course or something? Any way I'm not getting into the bigger argument just wanted to ask u a couple of questions....
if Verbal is soooo wrong with his last post could u quickly surmise the 4 pages of why it is?
And regarding the '3 okay prints' statement in there,,,,, u really think this? As 3 prints go by one artist i can't think of one who's created 3 in the last what 9 months that come near these....I'm fascinated by the negative views on SBFO as they seem to always come from an 'ad'/design angle not sure why this?
oh well what do i know? (only what i like )
peace out
(i totally agree with the little less hype - but unfortunately boards like this, create and keep the ball rolling...)

SHELL BLOOD FOR OIL ON EBAY, by Wiseblood on Jul 14, 2007 10:29:10 GMT 1, I have spent 10 grand on Beejoirs work in the last 3 weeks and i absolutely guarantee than none of it will ever see the open market again. For my money i got 2 f**king amazing originals, an edition of 15, an editon of 3, an edition of 10 an edition of 35 and one of 75.
Just out of interest what pieces have you bought? Just you say you have bought what i can think of 2 origionals and 5 prints, i can only think of 4 prints by him, greed, lv, turin, and sbfo. Just wondering if there was another one i didnt know about

SHELL BLOOD FOR OIL ON EBAY, by carlito on Jul 14, 2007 10:36:48 GMT 1, an edition of 15 is the hand stencilled Turin Scam, an edition of 3 is a SBFO no one has seen , an edition of 75 is the original Turin Scam, the edition of 35 is the original LV Child and the edition of 10 errr Greed I think
personally I think the craziest prices have been seen around Greed - which was a freebie / gift that ppl shouldn't even be selling dammit

SHELL BLOOD FOR OIL ON EBAY, by stuey09 on Jul 14, 2007 14:38:56 GMT 1, I just read Nu's comments and as usual he has offered an honest perspective on a piece of art. I don't necessarily agree with all of his comments, but certainly appreciate a balanced argument. Rather than one way traffic praising SBFO.
I've bought TS and LV, and think that both pieces are really clever and well worked, so I respect Beejoir as a talented artist. However, I was indifferent to SBFO, so didn't go for it. Therefore I feel that the praise of this work is great on one hand, because Chris does seem a genuinely nice bloke with talent, but on the other hand the praise seems a little over the top for something that IMHO is just 'okay'
Just my opinion
