Selling an og does not mean you sell the right to image with it.

Depends on the contract... Brands often buy/keep the rights in order to keep control on the said image. He probably accepted to sell OG AND rights for an interesting sum (that would compensate the fact of not being able to ever use that work again for prints etc).

In illustration domain, I think I read Frank Frazetta was the first to impose to editors the fact that he kept OGs. I am a fan of Dungeons& Dragons illustration and painters did not keep most of the OGs nor the illustration rights to their works. TSR owning everything. But the difference is they were full time hired illustrators, not freelance at the time. They became freelance in order to keep control of their art I guess.

There was a POW postcard a couple of years back by Blu with a woman I think doing washing up with lots of little dinosaurs climbing over the work board.

Yeah! the Martin Whatson piece would make a great print release
