VAT - Answers from the horses mouth, by stickitup on Aug 23, 2011 12:57:42 GMT 1, no surprise to hear FEDEX have messed things up for you, recently they f*cked up a further import for me, by not declaring the goods correctly, having spoken to them they told me it would be an eight week delay, on top of the 4 week delay already passed with them failing to correct the problem, I ended up going to Customs myself and telling them I would sort it out, and then got a bill for the work they didn't do. Plus they put my account on hold until it was paid....Ended up paying the £35 for them basically doing the wrong thing and me sorting it out....Bunch of cnuts.

VAT - Answers from the horses mouth, by sohohoho on Aug 23, 2011 13:46:23 GMT 1, I recently found out Parcelfarce are not allowed to hold a package once it's VAT has been paid so when you receive a bill for VAT + Clearance Fee (usually £8.50 or £13.50), give them a call to make payment but tell them to take for the VAT ONLY and invoice you later for the Clearance Fee.
I've just received a bill for £17.21 £3.71 VAT + £13.50 Clearance Fee It didn't half feel good to pay just £3.71 ;D

VAT - Answers from the horses mouth, by murdock on Aug 23, 2011 14:29:10 GMT 1, Reading Fedex and Papermonster in the same sentence reminds me of last week, when I got TWO invoices from them for a Papermonster print. The first one had arrived damaged and PM sent me another one, but sure enough, Fedex stung me two times with VAT and handling fees...

Well, if they do invoice you for the Clearance Fee later (it has been known for them not to even bother), send them a cheque for a quid and enclose a note saying you want a breakdown of the fee before any further payment is made.

cannot wait to try that!
so, yesterday got stung by royal mail with a "sender did not pay full postage of £12". which turned out to be 4 quid vat and 8 quid fee, which really really annoys me. i was wondering if there was anyway to pay the VAT up front? i'm guessing not but it seems stupid that the only way you can pay the vat is to wait for PF/RM to charge you and add on a whacking great fee.

VAT - Answers from the horses mouth, by sohohoho on Aug 24, 2011 16:17:21 GMT 1, I don't think it's possible to pay VAT up front. Exchange rates fluctuate numerous times a day and HMRC are not set up to accept individual VAT payments, hence why they are dealt with by a broker (Parcelforce).

VAT - Answers from the horses mouth, by skitchy on Nov 4, 2011 15:26:22 GMT 1, I have just been hit with a £56.67 import VAT and £13.50 Clearance Fee
So total £70.17 on a print edition of 35
Does anyone know if a way of getting the 5% tax rate instead of the 20%?
Any info much appreciated!

VAT - Answers from the horses mouth, by fotbh on Nov 4, 2011 23:27:45 GMT 1, If your claiming back charges that you believe should have been charged at 5% but instead were charged at 20% I understand you should send them a copy of the receipt for the item, the letter from parcelforce advising that charges are due and the document on the package itself that says charges were applied.
Can anybody tell me if they would accept a paypal receipt as a receipt for the item? It was a sale from another member.

VAT - Answers from the horses mouth, by Hubble Bubble on Nov 5, 2011 8:21:54 GMT 1, thanks all, looks like il have to pay up front for it and apply for a refund later which sucks Skitchy The 5% rate applies to you. It is not just for originals but also for limited edition prints created by hand (ie not by copying or laser printing). if your piece came in by parcel force then follow the instructions above in the thread re: the reclaim letter. If it came through another body then contact them directly. Don't let it get out of hand though - it could end up costing you more in your time than the refund is worth. The clearance fee remains the same. HB

VAT - Answers from the horses mouth, by craigf on Feb 5, 2012 9:35:33 GMT 1, I've just been stung with £70 vat plus £13.50 handling on a print that only cost me £180!!!
I'm not too bothered re paying £36, but bloody hell 40% import tax takes the biscuit. I assume customs took the price in dollars and calculated assuming it was gbp then added a bit more on top to p me off
Re the original vs print debate, it's a Keyes scorch 1. I think these are giclee's so whats the view on whether they should be 5% or 20%. Not bothered on this, but useful for future reference if buying something more pricey

VAT - Answers from the horses mouth, by The Origin on Feb 5, 2012 11:56:55 GMT 1, Hey mate,
By the letter of the law these should be 20% but i wrote off stating the legislation on my Keyes Stampede and got it reduced to 5% after over a month of waiting. Probaby worth doing. I went down the 'hand embelished print route' claiming it was a one of kind which I guess if you wanted to press the point it is due to the signature and different print no. on it. Very difficult for them to prove otherwise too!
Good luck.

VAT - Answers from the horses mouth, by kenzler on Feb 24, 2012 12:13:30 GMT 1, TNT just billed me @ 20% which is £32.24. This should be £8.11 and if I’m right anything under £9 is wavered? They then charged me £15 for paying my charge up front plus £3 Vat on top of that charge so £18 in total.

VAT - Answers from the horses mouth, by stickitup on Mar 15, 2012 0:17:01 GMT 1, I don't think it's possible to pay VAT up front. Exchange rates fluctuate numerous times a day and HMRC are not set up to accept individual VAT payments, hence why they are dealt with by a broker (Parcelforce). Exchange rates do change throughout the day but HMRC use a monthly rate unless the currancy fluctuates hugely and then they update, for instance a couple of years ago when the £ to $ exchange rate was shifting radically every couple of days. Current rates can be checked on the HMRC web site.
