Auctions at Bloomsbury and Sotheby's, by Pattycakes on Aug 22, 2007 11:04:23 GMT 1, So with two auctions of Banksy prints coming up in the London sales what do people think will happen to the prices? I'm not sure, I have a feeling we're going to see a huge price jump - but perhaps not? What do people think?

I think you should probably read Pezlow's thread, then have a think about it

Auctions at Bloomsbury and Sotheby's, by Pattycakes on Aug 22, 2007 12:40:47 GMT 1, I presume you mean the price one, yes I agree with what he's saying, but it's still something that I know all of us do care about.
Of course I love my prints or I wouldn't have bought them, but we're on a very different playing feild now, pictures that originally cost very little are now monetarily becoming life changing objects on the wall. For me it's daunting to know that I could literally buy a quarter of my flat with what my prints are worth - will I sell them right now, probably not, but it's sorely tempting.

You're right, but the point that was made and it thankfully received some righteous acknowledgement, was that all this talk of money has become overwhelming when most people who post are more intersted on the artwork.

Fair enough. It is an important topic to alot of people.
But it's all been said! There is nothing left to say. Prints values are either going to go up or down. What's the point in speculating? It's boring!
What is interesting is the real reason prices go up or down such as quality of the art, what the artist produces etc.

Auctions at Bloomsbury and Sotheby's, by dgb133 on Aug 22, 2007 14:46:54 GMT 1,
I don't think anyone is here on these boards that isn't more interested in the artwork than the price. The fact that the cost of it has slowly crept in to be such a hot topic though is a sign of things changing and a sign of how out of whack the message has become from the art and the price of it. Banksy's prints have become as much a form of currency as a piece of art - like it or not. It reminds me of the small band that hits it big and all of a sudden the success, fame, tension and greed tears the band apart. Not a perfect analogy but similar - will the same thing happen here? Will excess cost and fame "cost" Banksy his core audience? If you already have a nice Banksy collection that's great but to the outsiders who have to consider whether it's worth sacrificing so much to join the banksy print club it's a big issue.
Yeah but that's not the only reason anymore. Now it goes up and down because of hype and speculation too. That's the real problem.
---and what the hell is going on with PINK text up top? It's freaking me out.

Auctions at Bloomsbury and Sotheby's, by Pattycakes on Aug 22, 2007 15:02:54 GMT 1, And that is the art world for you! Look at people like Charles Saatchi who basically made the YBA artist's of the early 90's, he bought virtually all of the work he could, held on to it for a few years, hyped it up and then unceremoniously sold everything at auction. Making him millions of ยฃ's in profit, but actually screwing all the artist's who he supposedly loved and wanted to nurture. Now of course Hirst is a huge name and it's not affected him, but what about all the other artist's who wern't as fortunate, who's careers have been virtually destroyed because so many of their pictures were sold off - no longer wanted by the great art collector Saatchi.
