Cheltenham 2012, by dasium on Mar 9, 2012 0:23:42 GMT 1, I remember last year there was a forum thread on Cheltenham that threw up a few winners....
Here are my fancies/thoughts this year...
Day 1
Supreme Hurdle: wide open, think Galileo's Choice a very tentative choice, Weld's course record a worry, a week favourite in Darlan, since 1996 54 horses have ran in Cheltenham hurdle races that have fallen last time out, none have won.
Arkle: Sprintre Sacre, has practically been described as the reincarnation of Pegasus's.... has been impressive, prohibitive odds for me, will have a small interest in Kid Cassidy, underrated horse at an each way price (may go for Grand Annual later in week, off a nice handicap weight)
JTL Chase: Will look at in more detail when runners confirmed.
Champion Hurdle: Hurricane Fly again a deserved short priced Favourite, Oscars Wells for a bit of each way value....
Cross Country: Top two in the betting both Willie Mullins, prefer the 2nd of those Uncle Junior myself, I'm sure the jockey will know which track to take this time, unlike earlier in the year.... a race always won by an Irish trained horse, Maljimar the best of the home teams entries.
Mares Race: Should be a quick fire treble for Mullins as the wonder mare Quevega looks unbeatable in these races... Swinecombe Flame to follow her home, decent e/w shout.
Pulteney NOV' Handicap Chase Again will look at after declarations

Cheltenham 2012, by rottenredrooster on Mar 9, 2012 1:00:05 GMT 1, Supreme Novices Hurdle = Steps to Freedom
Cross Country = Sizing Australia
Champion Bumper = Mozoltov
National Hunt Chase (Wednesday) = Mid Div And Creep
Obviously the favourites should win that's why Hurricane Fly, Sizing Europe, Long Run and Big Bucks are a nailed on accumulator. Got 18/1 with BetFred a couple of weeks ago (£500 to win 9k).

Got 18/1 with BetFred a couple of weeks ago (£500 to win 9k). Nice accum if it comes in.... have the four reigning champions ever repeated the sequence? Would have question marks over Long Run and to a lesser extinct Big Bucks... Have an e/w double on Mourad and Midnight Chase to hopefully get both placed.... The National Hunt Chase has my nap of the meeting Allez Garde, been seriously backed over this side of the Irish sea in the last few days... Alphie Spinner would have been my concern. Mid Div and Creep wouldn't have come into my reckoning at all..... know he came 2nd in the Foxhunters last year but other than that....Mozoltov is another left field pick.... Moscow Mannion probably the best of a bad lot of Irish bumper horses, beat a horse trained by Mullins last time out who is owned by close friends of my uncle, they felt their's was the best of Mullins yard, and backed it acccordingly both on the day and anti post for Cheltenham, was soundly beaten by Moscow Mannion... expect an English horse to be good enough to win this...

Cheltenham 2012, by dasium on Mar 9, 2012 1:39:50 GMT 1, irishracing.com asked a selection of Irish racing personalities for their best bets at this Year's Cheltenham Festival
Gordon Elliott - SHADOW CATCHER (Triumph Hurdle) “He travelled very well at Leopardstown, and a fast pace will suit him in the Triumph where we’ll be able to drop him in.”
Noel Meade - SPRINTER SACRE (Arkle) “He’s one of the best horses I’ve seen for a long, long time. He’s so much better since he’s gone over fences, and I think if you can back him at odds against it’s a great price.”
Robert Power - JETSON (Pertemps Final) “I think he won despite the soft ground in the qualifier at Leopardstown over Christmas. He’s in very good form and has a good each-way chance.”
Tom Malone (bloodstock agent) – PEDDLERS CROSS (Jewson Novices’Chase) I think he’s a stonewall certainty. They are not side-stepping Sprinter Sacre, they’re just doing what is right for the horse and that’s putting him into a race that he’ll win. I can’t see him beaten.
Paul Townend - BOSTON BOB (Neptune Investment Novices Hurdle) “He seems to be doing everything right, won well the last day at Leopardstown and I think he could be a Cheltenham type.”
Davy Russell - MIDNIGHT GAME (Supreme Novice Hurdle) “I'd say Midnight Game is maybe my best chance judged on the way the Mullins camp are talking about him.”
Paul Carberry - SHADOW CATCHER (Triumph Hurdle) “He's a lovely horse with loads of ability and I think the race should suit him.”
Andrew Lynch - SALSIFY (Foxhunters) “He was impressive here last time and the better ground will suit him.”
Barry Geraghty - SPRINTER SACRE (Arkle Chase) “He's the obvious one. What he has done so far is unbelievable. He broke the track record at Newbury and gave me some feel that day – the way he travelled and jumped. If things go well on the day and we get a clear round he'll be hard to beat. .”
Frank Berry - SNAP TIE (County Hurdle) “He was my nap for the meeting last year but was taken out on the morning of the County Hurdle. He has come down the weights a bit since.”
Jessica Harrington - STEPS TO FREEDOM (Supreme Novice Hurdle) “He's a nice horse to go there with and I think it's a big plus that he has won around there already.”
Tom Taaffe - ARGOCAT (Fred Winter Hurdle) “I like the horse and think he's progressive. He represents a bit of each-way value in the race.”
Joe Burke (Stan James) - SIZING AUSTRALIA (Glenfarclas Cross Country) “He’s only up 5lb for winning the race last year, and the prospect of fast ground on the cross-country course will suit him.”
Bryan Cooper - LUCKY WILLIAM (Grand Annual) “He’s only got 10st2lb, and I think he’s got a right chance off that mark. He’ll be suited by good ground.”
Darragh Fitzpatrick (Ladbrokes) - OSCAR WHISKY (World Hurdle) “I think he’s great value each-way, and he could just do Big Buck’s for toe on the run-in.”
Tony Kenny (William Hill) - SIZING EUROPE (Champion Chase) “I think it is a weaker race than last year, and he has such a good record at the track.”
Denis Kirwan (TV3) - TETLAMI (Supreme Novices’ Hurdle) “I was filming at Nicky Henderson’s yard and he’s very sweet on him.”
Ryan McElligott (Irish Field) - FIRST LIEUTENANT (RSA Chase) “He’s a course winner who will love the stiff three miles and the drying ground. His trainer has few peers when it comes to preparing one for this meeting.”
Damien McElroy (Journalist) - FIRST LIEUTENANT (RSA Chase) “He’s got a lot in his favour having won there before and will like the trip and good ground. I also think he’s better going left-handed.”
Gary O’Brien (At The Races) - SHADOW CATCHER (Triumph Hurdle) “I thought he hit the front too soon at Leopardstown last time, and he looks a bit of value.”
Noel O’Brien (NH Handicapper) - BOSTON BOB (Neptune Investment Novices Hurdle) “He gave 10lb and a beating to Lyreen Legend, who has won a Grade 2 since, at Leopardstown. That performance gives him a rating of over 150 which is high for a staying novice at this time of year.”
Brian O’Connor (Irish Times) - SHADOW CATCHER (Triumph Hurdle) “He didn’t get the run of the race the last day at Leopardstown, and will appreciate the stronger gallop in the Triumph.”
Barry Orr (Betfair) - MOUNT BENBULBEN (Albert Bartlett Novices Hurdle) “He was found to be not right when beaten by Boston Bob at Navan, and will love the trip.”
Dessie Scahill (Commentator) - DARLAN (Supreme Novices’ Hurdle) “He appeared to be going well when falling in the big handicap at Newbury, and was previously very impressive in novice hurdles.”
Leon Blanche (****) - BOSTON BOB (Albert Bartlett/Neptune Hurdle) “I'm a big fan of Boston Bob. He's in a couple of races but I've a feeling he'll go for the Albert Bartlett. I think he'll win whatever race he goes in.”
Brian Graham (Bookmaker) - AL FEROF (Arkle Chase) “I thought his run in the Victor Chandler was superb for a novice and if you go back to the Supreme last year he was in front of both Sprinter Sacre and Cue Card. Cue Card is going to make it a real test and Al Ferof will get every yard whereas I have a slight doubt about Sprinter Sacre's stamina, especially if by any miracle it turns up soft..”
Bernard Barry (leading point-to-point and Shelbourne Park bookmaker) – MOUNT BENBULBEN (Albert Bartlett Novices’Hurdle) Liked him since seeing him win his ‘point’in Tinahely and he looks a bit of value at around 6/1 for the Albert Bartlett.
Johnny Birrane (prominent on-course market analyst) – PIQUE SOUS (Weatherbys Champion Bumper) He was impressive at Leopardstown. There were plenty fancied against him including the Weld horse (Dancers Dilemma, finished 2nd) and Fenton’s (Five Point Plan) who finished fourth, but he just ran away from them. He’ll do for me in the bumper.
David Redvers (bloodstock agent) – GRANDS CRUS (Betfred Cheltenham Gold Cup) would be my fancy if he goes for the Gold Cup and I fancy Vulcanite each-way for the Supreme Novice. Obviously I think Hurricane Fly will win the Champion and Sprinter Sacre will win the Arkle but what do I know as I’m a flat boy these days.
Mike Barrett (point-to-point enthusiast/punter) – SALSIFY (Christie’s Foxhunters Chase). He’s won the last three big hunter chases in Ireland, he likes good ground and his performance at Leopardstown the last day makes him the main Irish contender. I know Chapoturgeon and Cloudy Lane are fancied for the home team but with Boxer Georg and Merchant Royal as solid back-up, I think this will be a race for the Irish.
Peter Kavanagh (former jockey and a key cog in the Noel Meade team) – SIZING EUROPE (Sportingbet.com Queen Mother Champion Chase) and SPRINTER SACRE (Racing Post Arkle Chase) Should both win, but they are short prices. . At bigger odds MONKSLAND (Neptune Investment Management Novices’Hurdle) has a big each-way shout. He would want a drop of rain. He is a good horse.
Neil O’Donnell (journalist and agent for DBS) – MONKSLAND (Neptune Investment Management Novices’Hurdle) He looked good in his point-to-point before running out and he couldn’t have been any more impressive when winning an admittedly ordinary bumper at Down Royal. He’s gone the right way since and Noel Meade thinks he’s very very smart. His sire, Beneficial is getting plenty of winners.NOT BEFORE EIGHT (Christie’s Foxhunters Chase) has an each-way shout
Franco Hughes (bookmaker) – MOSCOW MANNON (Weatherbys Champion Bumper) Up North here we’re all hoping the local horse does the business. It’s creating great banter at the ‘points’up here every Saturday. He is a good horse and I think he can do it for Brian Hamilton and young Lavery.
Paul Cashman– FIRST LIEUTENTANT (RSA Chase) He is a good horse and I think he’ll take a lot of beating.
Matt O’Connor (amateur rider) – ROYAL GUARDSMAN (Weatherbys Champion Bumper) He was very impressive at Ascot the last day and he has plenty of experience now. I know the Tizzards think a lot of him and they obviously know what’s required to win this race after Cue Card. He should be a value price too.
Jim Murphy (Redpender Stud) – QUANTITATIVEEASING (JLT Speciality Handicap Chase) He’s been put by for this and it’ll be on to the Grand National for him after this. I have a two-year-old half-brother to him here by Robin Des Champs so I’d like to see him go well. I bought First Lieutenant as a foal and sold him as a three-year-old so I’ll be watching him closely but a lot will depend on whether Grands Crus goes in the RSA or the Gold Cup.
Mikey O’Connor (amateur rider and trainer) – BURTON PORT (Betfred Cheltenham Gold Cup) Just looking in from the outside you’d have to love his run the last day. He is a good each-way bet for the Gold Cup. He lost ground going to the last on Long Run last time out but he pressed him all the way to the line after that and you’d have to think that there’ll be more to come.
Mark Molloy (trainer and seller) My hope would be an Irish one, two in the Christie’s Foxhunter Chase with SALSIFY and ON THE FRINGE. I don’t know which of the two to pick. Salsify put up a very taking performance the last day whilst Enda’s horse should come on from it and he gallops, jumps and stays. They are two young progressive horses and you’d like to think they’d have too much for the home team.
P J Colville (trainer and seller) – PEDDLERS CROSS (Jewson Novices’Chase) Two and half around there won’t be any bother as he’s obviously won a point-to-point and he stays. Over two he was second to Hurricane Fly last year so at 3/1 he looks the bet to me.

Cheltenham 2012, by rottenredrooster on Mar 9, 2012 1:47:33 GMT 1, Supreme Novices Hurdle = Steps to Freedom Cross Country = Sizing Australia Champion Bumper = Mozoltov National Hunt Chase (Wednesday) = Mid Div And Creep Obviously the favourites should win that's why Hurricane Fly, Sizing Europe, Long Run and Big Bucks are a nailed on accumulator. Got 18/1 with BetFred a couple of weeks ago (£500 to win 9k). Nice accum if it comes in.... have the four reigning champions ever repeated the sequence? Moscow Mannion probably the best of a bad lot of Irish bumper horses, beat a horse trained by Mullins last time out who is owned by close friends of my uncle, they felt their's was the best of Mullins yard, and backed it acccordingly both on the day and anti post for Cheltenham, was soundly beaten by Moscow Mannion... expect an English horse to be good enough to win this...
Not in living memory. Big Bucks will walk it. The only danger to Long Run is a fit Kauto Star. I agree with you about Mourad, a seasoned Cheltenham horse, might finish within 12 lengths of Big Bucks if it's lucky (I've had E/W on Mourad as I have a soft spot for the tough little bastard).
I always backed Mid Div and Creep as it does exactly that, it can creep up and cause a surprise (it had an unlucky fall at the first fence last week... but that's a part of the master plan.. get on 33/1).
Always go a bit leftfield, best scoop ever She's Our Mare when she won at Ballybrit.

Cheltenham 2012, by mayhem on Mar 9, 2012 11:56:37 GMT 1, I neither have great knowledge of horses in the racing world. Seem to be able to remember the horses that lost me money, and the ones that have won the Grand National but that's about it. My recently departed grandfather used to be the family's source of reliable tips so this thread will be a great help for me this year. Thanks for the input guys!

Cheltenham 2012, by supercockle on Mar 9, 2012 13:03:07 GMT 1, Is anyone going down? (or up) I am thinking of going down on the Tuesday for the day in the Best Mate enc but also have tickets for Thursday in some swankier part of the ground. My racing knowledge these days is dreadful, however, these were the tips given at a racing club Cheltenham meeting on Tuesday night, given by Timeform and some other guys. Boston Bob - Albert Bartlett hurdle Catch Me (ew) in whichever race they put it in. Vendor in Fred Winter Our Father - Whichever race Knockara Beau Gold Cup (betting without the front two) Salut Flo - whichever race. I also have a racing update from a mate who makes a living from tipping horses. PM me if you're that keen. I dont want to share it with everyone as it's actually sold to his customers but will pass on to PMs.

Cheltenham 2012, by dasium on Mar 12, 2012 2:12:02 GMT 1, Only two more sleeps!
Vendor seems to be really fancied by Alan King
“I think he’s very good. I only ran him the once at Newbury when he was impressive and when I got the mark of 129 I had to sit on it and not run again. His work has been very, very good since and so has his schooling. I think he’s a pretty exciting horse.”
I know Andrew Mac has been talking up the chances of Catch Me who seemingly has recaptured some of he's old sparkle... has frustrated me once too often to carry my money though!

Cheltenham 2012, by dasium on Mar 12, 2012 9:42:47 GMT 1, Quevega and Hurricane Fly just a little short for the type of betting I'm at these days... will do an each way double Oscars Wells and Swincombe Flame, as I expect both to place but not win, both at double figure odds so would show a nice profit for little exposure... As mentioned above will be siding with Jetson in Buena Vista's race, have a look at he's last Irish run, was well backed, 16's into 10's, nearly brought down at the first, got good experience of the hustle of a big field, did it cosily, and most importantly the english handicapper only put him up 5Ibs from he's Irish rating...

Cheltenham 2012, by elwheel on Mar 12, 2012 21:36:03 GMT 1, For idiots like me das, does a higher three figure number (the timeform) mean that this system rates that horse more favourably than the others (being very careful to not use the word 'tips')?

Cheltenham 2012, by dasium on Mar 12, 2012 22:13:27 GMT 1, That right, if the race is a championship race (Grade 1, race 1,2 & 4 tomorrow) the horses are listed in alphabetic order, if its a handicap (race 3, 5 and 7) the horses are listed by the weight they will carry....there are also races such as the Mares Race tomorrow that is graded but offers incentives to certain horses (may not have won previously, or at this grade, be younger etc) this will be list alphabetically in order of similar weight....
I find Timeform particularly good to use in handicaps, their record in Cheltenham is quite good. I remember a sales pitch they had a few years ago that if you backed the 3 highest rated horses in very race, they showed a profit in each of the previous 10years..... not sure if it still applies to the 4 day festival.
take note if they have a symbol beside the number esp +'s and P's.... there is an index on the last page....

Cheltenham 2012, by dasium on Mar 13, 2012 0:19:43 GMT 1, Not sure if the love for Mid Div & Creep shown on this thread will be vindicated....! If that lucky 15 comes in there will be some nice art winging its way to Belfast! The first 3 will give you a run for your money in it for sure.

Cheltenham 2012, by rottenredrooster on Mar 13, 2012 0:36:37 GMT 1, I like to do it race by race (after doing the big bets that is)...
Just put my first combination forecast for the 1:30 tomorrow.
Steps to Freedom 7/1 Trifolium 11/1 Montbazon 8/1
Heard Mid Div and Creep had its annual neck massage last night, this morning it went from 33/1 to 20/1.

Think that neck massage might have send him to sleep as he's a non runner!
a small each/way yankey on these, Tetlami, Alphie Sherrin, Triola D'alene, and Maljimar

Cheltenham 2012, by supercockle on Mar 13, 2012 17:38:54 GMT 1, My day has been a disaster. I picked a 18-1 (price at the time) winner and 20-1 second. It didn't take my bet on the 18-1 horse and I didn't notice til after the race because my builder called round and I spent 30 minutes outdoors with him. As for the 20-1 second, I looked at my bet after and saw I'd accidently backed the horse above. All this without drinking a drop. Lord knows what Thursday's going to be like when I'm likely to be leathered by the time the first race sets off. Hope everyone else did better.
On the plus side my building quote was almost £5k less than a previous quote so I guess I am still a winner really.

Bollocks to Mid Div and Creep at Cheltenham. It's all the Midlands National now. Mid Div, had a bit a tight neck after the massage so decided to pull out and go for the long haul.
Got fed up with Cheltenham by 3, started feeding the roulette machines, ended up recouping the loses. Vowed to stop using those, but though what the fuck who cares when you have a canny think about the TOON.
Whacked the winnings on an each way on Sizing Australia at 5/1 which means it covered my losses.
