What do you REGRET Selling, Buying or Not Buying, by killerkellah on Apr 14, 2008 15:22:05 GMT 1, Had a chat about this with a mate in the pub yesterday and would be interested to hear members tales.
Whats your biggest art regret? Have you passed up on a Banksy canvas because you didnt think the flat was big enough. Sold something on the cheap, only to see it soar in value? Walked straight passed an Adam Neate and thought, thats nice....only to find out he wants people to take them?
Any stories?

What do you REGRET Selling, Buying or Not Buying, by killerkellah on Apr 14, 2008 15:32:15 GMT 1, ouch. I saw what Im sure was a Los Gemeos canvas in my local charity shop, I didnt have the patience to wait in what was a busy shop to ask if I could have a look at it.
when I went back the next morning, of course it was gone... all five pounds of it.

Well I wish that was the case, hindsight is a wonderful thing, always act on your instinct. In theory I would have a been worth a couple of million by now.

What do you REGRET Selling, Buying or Not Buying, by robinbanks on Apr 14, 2008 15:42:06 GMT 1, This thread kind of infers that people like stuff a lot more once they realise how much it's worth.
If you liked it that much back in the day you would have bought it then.
When I bought BME, my first ever Banksy I had the choice of buying HAND and a couple of others if I wanted. I didn't because I didn't like the image as much as BME.
BME is still on my wall and I don't regret that I didn't buy the others - even though they'd be worth X thousand pounds now.

What do you REGRET Selling, Buying or Not Buying, by thinkbank on Apr 14, 2008 15:43:53 GMT 1, i saw Steve Laz about three weeks before the Turf War show. He had quite a few flying copper pieces lying around which Banksy was going to use for show as well as to attack the bridge in Shoreditch. He said I could have one for around 200squids.
I was a bit skint at the time so said Id pick one up in a few weeks when Id been payed. After all the interest in the show Steve didnt have any left and the ones he did had shot up in price to a grand plus...
Looking back, I still should have grabbed one for a grand!!!

i do kind of regret buying a jeff koons flower puppy last year - only around ยฃ50 -but i was underwhelmed when it showed up.

i can see what your saying mate, but that wasnt the point of this thread, though naturally money plays a part because alot of the art we had the opportunity to buy is now out of our reach,
I suppose non of us, not even banksy could have predicted how popular his work would have become. some things I passed up thinking maybe sometime soon...now those same things are totally out of my reach...
thats the regret.

Yeah - I wasn't singling you out mate or having a dig at you. Not at all...
Just most people's idea of regret when talking about art is missing out on the opportunity to make some serious dollar - hence nearly every single post about having the chance to buy a Banksy or whatever for ยฃx and it's now worth ยฃxyz.
I'd be every surprised if you get anyone talking about this amazing little original they saw at a student show that was snapped up by someone else if the artist in question didn't go on to make it big.

well said Killer. I loved the piece i mentioned previously in this thread but like i said i was skint at the time. As to the price it's worth, well it depends on everyones financial situation. I only mentioned the price it went for coz as much as i loved it, at the moment i would love ยฃ164,000 a bit more than the painting.

no offence taken, i know exactly what you mean. i worked around Old Street when Banksy work was just starting to take off there. i liked it,. but wasnt at the age / atitude to ever really consider buying art.
it was my wife who made me realise how special art can be, i wish id acted on my instincts and love of the art then, because now its way out of my reach!!

So I reckon going for a ยฃ450 rather than ยฃ500 bid for a Faile Butterfly Girl (the purple/green one) on ebay last year that ended about ยฃ455. Admittedly it would be worth a few grand now I imagine, which would be a pleasant thought, but more importantly there's only 12 of them and I've never seen one for sale since at any price.

classic, my mate turned down a free ticket to see Pink Floyd because he wanted to spend time with the love of his life - who dumped his six weeks later.
i wanted to add that banksy and the like have proved that you dont have to be some arty farty luvvie to appreicate / buy or create art.
its a shame that the same people who Banksy was sticking two fingers up at have adopted him as one of their own.

What do you REGRET Selling, Buying or Not Buying, by jonpud on Apr 14, 2008 16:55:34 GMT 1, No regrets really, I could have bought a Banksy canvas 10 times over back in the day, I didn't because I didn't like any of the images available really. If I had said that I now regret it then it would be for financial reasons only, which in turn would mean that I was in this for all the wrong reasons!
I have 2 genuine regrets, 1. Not buying a Grin Reaper when I looked at it every day for months on POW but wasn't willing to pay ยฃ400.00, still love the image! and 2. selling my CWSB to fund new purchases (sort of regret as I did pick up some nice pieces with the money which I still have!!)

What do you REGRET Selling, Buying or Not Buying, by newmang on Apr 14, 2008 16:59:16 GMT 1, I'm beginning to regret deciding to take the day off Thursday to go to Nick Walkers show, given the level of negativity in the 'V For Vandalism' thread. All the talk of queues, queue jumpers, flippers, over priced prints, bubbles bursting etc. is taking the edge off what will hopefully be a great exhibition.
Also regret when I bought my Girl with Balloon from POW for ยฃ85 I thought the price was extortionate, so I didn't bother with the BME or Weston Super Mare that were also available at the time.

What do you REGRET Selling, Buying or Not Buying, by woodsman on Apr 14, 2008 17:02:52 GMT 1, Again this is kind of down to money as well. Was in Beat13 with the girlfriend chatting to the shop owner debating whether i should get the Pete Fowler tooth brush wielding monster thing print or spend the extra money and get a signed laugh now. This is before i was really into the scene and to be honest i was swayed by the missus and shop owner.....you can guess which one I went for, however I did get my Peepers from her (i regret not get it personalized now). She had s**t loads of Banksyโs just sitting in the filing cabinet thingโฆโฆoh well never mind.
Again this is kind of down to money as well. What do you REGRET Selling, Buying or Not Buying, by Heavyconsumer on Apr 14, 2008 17:11:55 GMT 1, Not becoming interested in the scene until after so many pieces were near impossible to grab at source. My new-found interest had nothing to do with finances, but I am a peasant so I find my collecting is very limited to what I can afford (not much) and my nature is to grab whatever I like. I'm a big-spender for a peasant! If I'd become interested a couple of years earlier I'd no doubt have quite a wonderful and substantial collection by now, which when you're a peasant, is a bonus! Bye bye hovel, hello mansion!!! Just kidding, but yeah, my regret is not being interested in any art collecting earlier on.
