What do you REGRET Selling, Buying or Not Buying, by kuni on Apr 17, 2019 14:53:49 GMT 1, Girl With Balloon signed for ยฃ150 or whatever it was from art republic in Brighton. Decided couldnโt stretch to that. Changed mind later - only had unsigned. Decided I really wanted it signed so ended up with neither. Doh ! It's incredible to think that you could have just strolled into AR and picked up a signed GWB for 150. So much has changed - you've got relatively no name artists selling out $500-1000 prints in minutes. Everyone looking for the next Banksy.

Remember trying for it and after 15 to 20 minutes decided i had to get to work. Then passed on it later in the after market after I (more accurately my wife) deemed it too exepnsive at the time (think it was 5k maybe less). Now i will never own it. She has since allowed me to trust my taste

She sells them $ 200,000 a year later.

Even more recently just over a year ago those Ai Weiwei hands (editions of 1000) sat there for a reasonable amount of time for ยฃ600 at source.
They fetch anything between ยฃ4K-ยฃ6k depending which auction house you use

We were about to meet in the middle when a work I had just bought from them (ยฃ10k) arrived damaged. Long story short they refused to accept it was damaged prior to crating and I had to fork out on my own art insurance cover. Needless to say we did not conclude the other deal. No names but one of the top houses worldwide. Canvas is probably worth $400/500k+ in todays market but worse still I will probably never add a Condo to my collection as that ship has sailed.....

What might seem like poor value now because the artwork doesn't flip for more on secondary, could be the next best thing. It's about going out there and looking at as much art as possible. This always ends up being a list of what everyone owns.

What do you REGRET Selling, Buying or Not Buying, by kapusta on Apr 17, 2019 18:30:35 GMT 1, Mine are a bit less exciting, but 3 that come to mind are:
- Stik "Liberty" in yellow that I nearly bought for $1k but felt it was too much/not worth the price.
- Parra "Cannonball" just keeps evading me. The last couple on ebay got snatched before I could react. The only other collector that's currently selling one has doubled his asking price in the past couple years. I should have bought it before that. Still kicking myself... - An OG by Michael Reeder from 2017. I reached out to the gallery and they offered me the piece and said "Let us know ASAP as we have a lot of interest." I emailed back within 15min with asking a question about shipping before committing and they sold to another collector instead. Huge bummer

Holy crap, it doesn't get much more regrettable than that! Unreal. Did you just pass on it? Too much to spend at the time? The instinct to keep things from getting damaged stopped me from taking it on a 2 hour train ride home! It was big, i have taken bigger and more expensive things further by train since too!
It should have been mine, it was screaming at me to buy it. They just wouldnt deliver to where i lived at the time :-(

What do you REGRET Selling, Buying or Not Buying, by dirtypete on Apr 17, 2019 19:22:31 GMT 1, Mine was Girl with Red Balloon and a Barcode. At the time I remember stumbling out of The End night club and seeing a Banksy Laugh Now and was amazed when I found the poster (print) online. At the time ยฃ20 seemed like quite a lot of monkey and I couldnโt work out why anyone would pay ยฃ100 extra for a pencil signature.
The reason I missed gwrb and Barcode was my then girl, now my wife, was complaining why I was wasting money on stupid posters. By the time Iโd decided to buy them anyway they were sold out.
while she has grown to accept my collecting habits, there are still about two full portfolios she doesnโt even know exist. I have a few frames that let me rotate my prints and it sometimes takes her months to notice.

My then partner said Iโd spent too much on art, so I didnโt buy. Same canvas later sold at auction for, if memory serves, a low six figure $ sum. Doh.
Wifeโs aye!! There was a black and white unsigned trolleys on eBay for 500 pound odd, told my wife itโs one of my favourite images and she said โ but itโs not signedโ.. good point I thought (at the time). Then I found a signed black and white for 2100 pounds, a lot of money at that stage of our lives. I should have just bought the f**ker on the credit card (like I did with a parla print behind her back ๐) We kept discussing and more discussion.. anyway they both sold and prices went up on the signed very quickly..
Then we made $100k profit on an apartment we sold late 2010 I contacted a US gallery to buy their Signed Girl With Balloon as an investment for the kids uni fund..I have the email somewhere but it was from memory either $14k or $16k. Wife talked me out of it again as we needed the cash to invest in a bigger house.. although not sure I would have gone through with it as a lot of money at the time.
