you are better than you think.
milking Damien's dried titties is getting kinda awkward...

I agree with gentlemental the photography stuff is really good. I really like the 'Millenium Mills' Photographic print on the Magic Tree site.

Cartrain π¬π§ Tate Gallery β’ Damien Hirst β’ Gilbert & George, by Cedric Mnich on Sept 13, 2010 10:27:04 GMT 1, So what ? I respect other artists work. Respect does not prevent criticism. I join gentlemental on this. Cartrain has better talent than just pasting a deformed hirst skull on a Holbein painting.

Cartrain π¬π§ Tate Gallery β’ Damien Hirst β’ Gilbert & George, by Cedric Mnich on Sept 13, 2010 10:37:32 GMT 1, OK. My mistake. Forgive me on this. Just got the idea behind (I was not familiar with the painter's work). I understand Cartrain's artwork is mainly based on Hirst's. That's a point. (still bored but I admit I spoke too fast because I didn't understand what was behind that work).

Cartrain π¬π§ Tate Gallery β’ Damien Hirst β’ Gilbert & George, by Cedric Mnich on Sept 13, 2010 10:46:02 GMT 1, Yes Wizbong, I made the mistake of judgeing the work without knowing the original painting. Well, I still think the hirst skull does not bring much to the original (shall we expect a Hirst skull replacing on all Memento Mori paintings ?) but well there is a bigger idea than I thought at first view (I thought it was just a skull collaged to the work, but it needs a knowledge of the original to be understood : thanks Wikipedia :-). Cartrain seems to be wanting to associate his name to Hirst. Why not. Actually that's a good idea.
And we shall expect new surprises by Cartrain. He's ambitious. His art school might bring him more new inspiration !
(PS : I am not criticizing for criticizing pleasure, I have bought a Ransom print and a Millenium Mills photoprint from Cartrain, I am curious to see where he will go).

Cartrain π¬π§ Tate Gallery β’ Damien Hirst β’ Gilbert & George, by Cedric Mnich on Sept 13, 2010 11:21:26 GMT 1, Cartrain, some constructive criticism : Your work would be far more interesting if you had created a new "ambassadors" piece (through modern collages as you previously did in the past : using Cameron and Brown ?) with the Anamorphed Hirst skull in it. That would make an original work and beyond the creative visual aspect, would be a not-so-obvious reference to Holbein that only connoisseurs would understand. That would look great and be very Cartrainish !
My 2 cents.

Cartrain π¬π§ Tate Gallery β’ Damien Hirst β’ Gilbert & George, by Gentle Mental on Sept 13, 2010 11:57:34 GMT 1, it would've been cool if you oil painted hirst's diamond skull in, as holbein did with his skull long time ago.
but you didn't. or couldn't.
hence the uncomfortable cough.

Cartrain π¬π§ Tate Gallery β’ Damien Hirst β’ Gilbert & George, by Cedric Mnich on Sept 13, 2010 13:03:52 GMT 1, Photoshop ? Maybe just to help him find the correct angle... then paint it. I think that was a real pain in the a** to paint it... I saw the painting in a book today during my lunch pause and even with a book it was difficult to find the correct angle to view the skull as it would be. Much respect for Holbein... Unless he used some way to project the skull on the canvas (or camera osbscura process ?) it certainly was a head-scratching process... Anyway thanks Cartrain for using that painting : I didn't know Holbein, nor that painting (though the Henry VIII painting is famous) and I had my 15 mn of culture today.
Subject for a debate : "is Photoshop softly killing painting ?" :-)

Hi, I can't comment on Cartrain's work as I'm not familiar with it. Picking up on the comment above reminded me of a school project that my 10 year old daughter had to complete - here it is!
