Cartrain π¬π§ Tate Gallery β’ Damien Hirst β’ Gilbert & George, by Karl Read on May 16, 2011 10:35:43 GMT 1, Just wondering Cartrain, how is this piece done? Hand painted over a giclee, or all produced on the computer then printed giclee? Good work btw.

I was going to hand paint it but all computer wizardry here - to a more effective end I reckon.

My piece with both of our execution. Not sure whether it's still up, but three tate security were quite convinced it was their own painting when they made trips to examine it.

Cartrain π¬π§ Tate Gallery β’ Damien Hirst β’ Gilbert & George, by saint on May 16, 2011 11:40:01 GMT 1, Fair play to you (both of you/all of you). Its been done before but doesn't stop me from admiring the balls it must take to pull it off. Not interested in anything for the walls so wont register my interest thanks, but kudos to you guys for doing something outside the norm, and for not just producing tat to sell to idiots.

Cheers, it was surprisingly easy though. A good dozen or so people watched me stick up the painting and then went on with their merry way. Later we rolled a joint in the seating area and blazed it outside. No one batted an eyelid.

2. Modern Art is Garbage
"Cartrain is a young urban artist from London. At the precocious age of 16, he managed to start a public spat with established joker artist Damien Hirst; he also hung up a shield in the British Museum showing Greek soldiers wearing Nike trainers. In this clip, Cartrain manages to stick a piece of garbage on a wall in the Tate Modern.
The great thing about this clip is the reaction of some of the visitors. One of them looks quizzical but also moved by the piece, as if he has had an epiphany after studying it: "Hmm, clearly the artist is juxtaposing the glamorous lavishness associated with the story of The Three Musketeers with a base artifact commonly linked to logistics and homelessness. Bravo."
No. It's a dirty old cardboard box stuck on the wall by a teenager.

It is my piece people are reacting to, and my editing, so I'd be drawn to agree with you.

Now i'm not questionning the effort/balls/trickery/timing (delete as applicable) it takes to wander in to a museum and stick up an artwork.
Nor would I question the amusement in watching visitors fall for it (although museums do have an element of authority about them so it is understandable why people do go along with it).
But...
Isn't it a little old hat now?
We've seen banksy stick up the soup can, the beetle with weapons, the graffiti rat, and the shopping caveman cave painting.
Then even cartrain has done it before and been rewarded with a banksy tenner.
It just seems that this is a cheap/free/easy way of getting publicity for a piece of art. If any piece of art is strong enough it shouldn't need this kind of "reveal".
That said, good luck to all those who have entered the competition. (although it says a lot that people haven't actually seen the pieces being offered and still want in on the action)
