Cartrain ๐ฌ๐ง Tate Gallery โข Damien Hirst โข Gilbert & George, by hopelessquest on May 25, 2008 7:54:23 GMT 1, Its funny when i said best offer every one thought i was talking about money ? Well what would you like us to think, the title of the topic is "New work for sale" and the definition of the word sale is:
"an agreement (or contract) in which property is transferred from the seller (vendor) to the buyer (vendee) for a fixed price in money (paid or agreed to be paid by the buyer)"
Surely someone as informed on the works of Pablo Picasso as you are would have come across the word barter by now.
also ive now given away guernica free of charge to a forum member Which member was that then?
Careful... you are not too far away from getting everything you have ever done wiped off the streets...

Not necessarily - a contract needs "consideration" which could be money or something else ie swaps, free advertising, exchange of services etc.......
Sorry to be pedantic but he could have entered into a contact for anything...
sexual favours, promotion, the promise of publicity, maketing you name it.
Pedants of the world unite!

I fully agree with you. From what I can see tho there are some positive comments thrown in amongst the thread, of which I agree with most....subject if off, brown glob unnecessary, honing of the craft for a while longer def a must. We are seeing more and more mediocre art, quality is an interesting concept and is required in most human endeavours. In art it is essential for the success of the piece, even a simple stencil possessing quality looks amazing. Quality unfortunately can not be replaced with enthusiasm, altho this helps reach quality. .....and Cartrain I believe when you asked for a price or offered new work for sale as the thread suggests you were indeed fishing for $. Rumbled mate, take it on the chin. You need to add to your skills palette, then come back with a wow rather than a thread inciting 'unfavourable' comments. Full respect to you at having a go, good on you for donating the piece to a kind soul and persist with producing quality in your work.

Cartrain ๐ฌ๐ง Tate Gallery โข Damien Hirst โข Gilbert & George, by nacional on May 25, 2008 23:30:24 GMT 1, You don't like it fair enough...but this kind of negativity is really not necessary.
It is, by turns, ignorant, not needed, will discourage others from posting on here for fear of this kind of witch-hunt and stinks of the kind of elitism that this whole scene emerged to deconstruct.
Yours parents obviously didn't teach you that if you don't have anything nice to say clam up.
I have criticised many a thing on this forum, but have always tried to do so with either constructive advice or an attempt at wit.
Or I have just kept it shut.
Move along there please, nothing more to see here.....

Cartrain ๐ฌ๐ง Tate Gallery โข Damien Hirst โข Gilbert & George, by Coach on May 25, 2008 23:49:17 GMT 1, I have to say that I agree with Scavos and Nacional. A little less negativity would be a good thing imo. Constructive criticism is one thing. But the bitterness on this and other threads at the moment is unecessary. This used to be a supportive and friendly place to be. I hope it can get back to being that. Peace c

Cartrain ๐ฌ๐ง Tate Gallery โข Damien Hirst โข Gilbert & George, by Heavyconsumer on May 26, 2008 1:50:09 GMT 1, This thread does contain plenty of constructive criticisms as well as some honest opinions. While I hate the forum witch hunts, I do not believe this is one of them. Whilst some posters could have been more constructive or have elaborated, I think it's important to note the context of the thread and certain recent other threads. This was an artist's threead, selling a piece on the main board. This artist has his own forum and could have used the sales board here, but chose the main board. This ilicits a reaction to the work in question. The fact that the work is so different from others he's previously shown is also relevant and incites commentary. If he had posted in the "Your artwork - New Artists" board, there is no way he would have been subject to similar negative comments, so the point about others fearing similar treatment is totally invalid. However, as this is a forum full of people with opinions on art, he was bound to get some critical responses. In fact, out of respect to Cartrain, and I do respect him for persuing his dream and posting his work, he is OWED an honest response! If you feel comments are unfair or unfounded then OK, why? But because people criticize the work or give a negative opinion, is not reason to attack anyone who feels it's their right, or maybe even obligation to react negatively to the work at hand. In fact why have you jumped to his defense at all? This is not a personal attack, but a commentary on his art, why don't you just comment?
Besides, I would think that someone with Cartrains confidence, will probably only benefit from some honest reactions and not give up what he's been so dedicated to until now. He's also very young and makes some comments which clearly lack thought, such as iliciting a monetary value and then implying he wasn't looking for one. There's a lot he could learn from some of the reactions here, if he wants to, which presumably is one reason why he's here. I know that I've learned a great deal from many of you one way or another over the last year and I'd bet that art is more important to him than it is to me.

Could be a bit more balanced, colorful, or tighter.
But it's ALOT better that he spend time creating this stuff, rather than just typing into your laptop Hating on Work.
I'm sure there's somebody somewhere that has to have it.
Cheers ~!!!!!!!

sadly i was hopring to use real money and no milk caps to pay for it! looks like i missed the boat on this one j, gonna have to console myself at copyright/hush this week
gutted ;D ;D
on the more constructive side, i reckon if cartrain had taken this peice, stuck it on his wall, as a sarting point. then made a promise to himself that he would sit and paint 50 versions of it over the next 12 months, and only selling the 50th piece. if he then put the 1st and the 50th piece next to each other the proof of the thread would be right there for him to see....
