Cartrain π¬π§ Tate Gallery β’ Damien Hirst β’ Gilbert & George, by 2301 on Oct 19, 2008 19:17:17 GMT 1, Christ this is getting tedious! Trying to have a debate with people who have such a profound lack of artistic understanding or sensibility and are to put it politely...still in a challenging phase of their intellectual development, yet have somehow convinced themselves that they know everything is one of the most soul-deadening experiences imaginable. I feel this has descended to the level of trying to communicate with a bunch of flat-earthers who suffer from a severe case of empty vessel syndrome. It's just not going to happen really is it. We might as well be talking completely different languages, and I've heard more enlightened views about art coming from the average London cab driver than I have from some forum members.
So for those reasons, plus the fact that I seem to have attracted my own personal fanboy on here who has started to exhibit some rather worrying Barry George type symptoms, means that I've decided to leave you all to it. No doubt many of you will continue your childish bullying of Cartrain, but I'd just like to leave you with this thought...seeing as how Banksy and Cartrain get along quite well as far as I'm aware, I'd suggest that it's more than a little ironic that the very artist so many of you idolise and whose name this forum bears probably thinks that most of you are a bunch of sad pricks for the way you treat Cartrain.

i don't think anyone you have been disputing with has ever claimed to 'idolise' banksy- in fact i think that this is something you have decided to be FACT and therefore it is so. Just as you have solidified your views on cartrains art and leave no room to accept any criticism of his work.
Please come back when you have shown a classic cartrain collage to a cabbie i'd love to hear what he says... Though he may not say much, being as he would likely be laughing in your face at the time.
You continually harp on about "artistic understanding" yet neither you or the supposed artist can offer any form of explanation for this dross beyond apparent "exasperation" at an apparent failure of people to 'get it'
as i have said before, students working at GCSE level could produce this work. Is that what makes it bad? No. Is it art worth discussing in public? No. Nothing against someone thinking and creating their own stuff, shove it on the streets if you want to, but to take the piss and try to sell it? No way. If the work really has any strength to it then it would be discovered and discussed naturally, not pushed by '100artworks'
I'd like to say your sunny presence will be missed, but it won't, so goodbye whoever the fuck you were...

Cartrain π¬π§ Tate Gallery β’ Damien Hirst β’ Gilbert & George, by dmandpenfold on Oct 20, 2008 11:31:27 GMT 1, "I would suggest that if you can't find your own meaning in the work then it's probably better to just accept that fact and not get stressed about it. Art isn't about delivering literal explanations anyway, if that's what you want then you would be better off with a book about physics. And have you ever thought that maybe Cartrain isn't trying to tell you things, but wants you to find them out for yourselves instead? "
this is starting to sound a bit like the plot to the great rock and roll swindle....
Picture it.... Mr 100artwork McLaren wants to establish an artist and manipulate their way to artistic fame using them as pawns and to claim the financial rewards from the various sales of over priced work. The image doesnt matter because it's all about the viewers perception, and this is the beautiful bit - the art doesn't need to be explained by the artist because if you don't get it then you clearly aren't blessed with the appropriate amount of insight or vision and you don't deserve an explanation any anyway..
As Mr Lydon said "Ever get the feeling you've all been cheated"

Cartrain π¬π§ Tate Gallery β’ Damien Hirst β’ Gilbert & George, by alsbabar on Oct 20, 2008 11:44:34 GMT 1, you know i wont bergudge any artist who attempts to be controversial by plagiarizing other artists works and doing something fucked up with it, but i Cartrain your work is at best amateur, and at worse, you make up your own words - i dont get why any artist needs to come on to this forum to big themselves up, rather than letting their art do the talking for them.

very well said silky, with the exception that most artists do care, especially if they are making a living from it.

I guess some do, but I would think thats a very slippery slope If you just pander to the Sheep of the art world, then you never know when you suddenly might not be flavor of the month

Cartrain π¬π§ Tate Gallery β’ Damien Hirst β’ Gilbert & George, by stender on Oct 20, 2008 12:45:26 GMT 1, Does a piece of work have to have a meaning? I couldn't give a toss about some of the bollocks some artists spout about "oh it's capturing the metamorphosis of the inner child to adult in orwellian society"
I think mmmm that would go with my wallpaper.
I personally am not a fan of cartrains work but I think he should be able to advertise his wares at whatever price he likes! If you don't like it don't buy it. If he posts asking what do you think? then hey! it's open season!

Cartrain π¬π§ Tate Gallery β’ Damien Hirst β’ Gilbert & George, by dmandpenfold on Oct 20, 2008 12:56:53 GMT 1, i think there's plenty of opinion of what others think about it, good and bad, but none about the meaning of the work . It would be interesting to know what people think it expresses or even Cartrain (better from the horses mouth), i'm hoping it's more than "that would go with my wallpaper"

I agree, fair question. Not all art has to have a deep meaning but if it has and people don't get it then it's bad communication.
Apparently Cartrain told Silky a lot about his work the other week. But it's a secret.

its no secret its just that some people ask for the right reasons in the right way and are not looking to spew back abuse or get in to a bun fight for no better reason than the bun fighrt itself and that can get a little tiresome
