Cartrain π¬π§ Tate Gallery β’ Damien Hirst β’ Gilbert & George, by linkd95 on Dec 4, 2008 16:51:04 GMT 1, If what you say is true Scottd007 then what Hirst is doing is out of order. Hirst is a big hard-back man who earns over a Β£100,000,000 a YEAR. Hes sued Cartrain a 16 year old for using his skull picture in a painting/collage and demands Β£200. OMG that is soo out of order, a million pound earning man cant even let a teenager off 200 quid.

Crikey, I might knock up a poo collage of Hirsts bejeweled skull! Any pic he gives me can pay my mortgage off

Cartrain π¬π§ Tate Gallery β’ Damien Hirst β’ Gilbert & George, by gozgoz on Dec 4, 2008 19:58:01 GMT 1, I thought the best part of this whole thing is that in 2008, of all the amateur artists on this board, Cartrain gets the most crrap thrown at him but yet has the most media coverage.
which other amateur artist on this board can lay claim to being mentioned in so many sources of media!
Its brilliant i think...! And the best part is.... Cartrain is STILL getting crraap slung at him!

Cartrain π¬π§ Tate Gallery β’ Damien Hirst β’ Gilbert & George, by timba82 on Dec 4, 2008 21:42:50 GMT 1, are we choosing to forget how cartrain was basically pulling the wool over peoples eyes, implying damien hirst was going to buy one of his pieces etc etc.
in my eyes he was trying to dupe unsuspecting people in to thinking his work was 'highly investable'. basically a really crafty and shnidee way of trying to make a quick buck. i was never at any point fooled by him, i just feel pretty sorry for those that were.
i for one would never buy one of cartrains pieces. i simply dont like the guy. i'm not questioning his appeal to ther people. i'm sure he does appeal to other people. however he doesnt for me.
i definitley wouldnt want to put my hard earned money in this schemers pockets.
rant over

Cartrain π¬π§ Tate Gallery β’ Damien Hirst β’ Gilbert & George, by Tiki on Dec 4, 2008 23:13:22 GMT 1, No one's defending Cartrain and if they are then there a tit. Im questioning Hirst, regardless of cartrains actions. Hirst is fully aware of what is and has happened and like G said i wouldn't be suprised if Hirst tryed to make it a minor mistake. Funny how it always happens after the press get involved. Im not a violent person but i would be quite happy to chin him!

Cartrain π¬π§ Tate Gallery β’ Damien Hirst β’ Gilbert & George, by nacional on Dec 4, 2008 23:25:33 GMT 1, No guarantee that Hirst knew what was happening (although he would most certainly have got to hear about it by now). He is a multi-national who would have "people" acting on his behalf and I am sure he does not get consulted over every decision made regarding his works. There simply isn't enough hours in the day for that. Cartrain needs no defending. He's shown quite a few times he's adept at doing that himself. He is also a quite canny chap when it comes to marketing. Good on him. I find his work amusing at times and always fun to look at. I guess that makes me a tit..sorry Tiki...but as a friend of mine always said...if he had a pair of tits he would never have to go out at night and would just stay at home fondling them...so being a tit aint too bad after all....

Cartrain π¬π§ Tate Gallery β’ Damien Hirst β’ Gilbert & George, by Guy Denning on Dec 4, 2008 23:42:50 GMT 1, I hope that it is Hirst's machine that have done this and not Hirst himself. If it was down to Hirst personally then he's being a right c0ck. There's a lengthy and well established tradition of people borrowing, stealing, copying or referencing other's work in the art world and Hirst is well aware of this as he's done it himself. John Le Kay, Marco Pierre White, Robert Dixon, Norman Emms and no doubt others have accused Hirst of plagiarism or uncredited appropriation in the past. For someone who's worth near $400 million to chase around over Β£200 on the issue of an image that is not even claiming to be independent of the 'original' is petty, pathetic and inevitably pointless. As an asides somebody once told me that Hirst had bought one of my paintings - frankly I don't give a toss (assuming it's not a rumour - bearing in mind there have also been rumours that I was signing to Laz, selling paintings for Β£40K and joining the circus when I was 16). If somebody buys your work then I'm just content with that. It's a bit daft to try to engineer good publicity that isn't 100% proof - it's bound to go pear-shaped. There's a lot of buggers on these message boards with tentacles of truth in all sorts of pies and puddings.

Cartrain π¬π§ Tate Gallery β’ Damien Hirst β’ Gilbert & George, by Guy Denning on Dec 5, 2008 0:02:10 GMT 1, I just hope Hirst has done this knowing that Cartrain will get a good amount of PR out of it, so in a way is helping him out But may well be wishful thinking
I think it's clear Silky that Cartrain has already got a good deal of publicity out of it but in my opinion it was a bit daft sticking his bonce up and announcing that Hirst had acquired one of his pieces when that was clearly a bit of an application of Brasso to the turd of truth! I wouldn't buy anyone's work on the basis that someone famous already had - as if that adds a weight of critical authority. The bigger issue is though that an image of an artwork can be subjected to this kind litigious behaviour. Personally I like to think that I would have stood up to this sort of bullying (because that's basically what it is) and taken it further. I've got all kinds of artist, musician and writer 'heroes' but I don't give a flying fart what they buy and I wouldn't buy the same on the basis of what they bought either. Perhaps some do - more bloody fool them for not having their own minds.

You're clearly a poet as well sir ;D That bit made me laugh.
Cartrain making out he had done well by Hirst wanting his work was pushing the boundries a bit though. I cant decide if he was trying to do clever marketing or that he was just foolishly pleased to be linked to Hirst positively or negatively :S

Cartrain π¬π§ Tate Gallery β’ Damien Hirst β’ Gilbert & George, by Heavyconsumer on Dec 5, 2008 4:23:44 GMT 1, "Recently talks have been going on with me, 100artworks, and Damien hirsts team. Damien has Requested interested in the artworks ( For the love of God ) personally and he has now obtained them though a deal made with me. The artworks as of today are now in his possession and not much more can be said. Well done to everyone that purchased one before Hirst got involved ;D ;D ;D"
I know at this stage that the above quote (Cartrain's original post on this matter) can't be taken seriously. I think in light of what's emerged since, it is worth considering that [erhaps Cartrain was ammused and wanted to share a bit of irony and a laugh with us. I hope that's what this was about at the start and not an attempt to dupe people into buying his work. This certainly brought a bit of entertainment though.
While I've not liked much of Cartrain's work in the past, I hope that he gets a good deal more than Β£200 in mileage out of the publicity this scenario has generated for him, as it would be no more than poetic justice when one looks at Hirst's (or his team's) role in all this. Petty is an understatement.

>> Hard-headed Hirst << Cartrain owes artist all his money
If there's anyone out there who doesn't already think Damien Hirst is a cock, try this story. He sued a 16 year-old graffiti artist, Cartrain, who featured images of Hirst's diamond skull in his collages. In September Hirst made 95.7m pounds from auctioning his wares. The money Cartrain made that Hirst is demanding? 200 quid.

Cartrain π¬π§ Tate Gallery β’ Damien Hirst β’ Gilbert & George, by Winter on Dec 5, 2008 11:25:20 GMT 1, I still can't work out how Hirst new about Cartrain's pieces. The exposure Cartrain is getting is worth a fortune so I wouldn't be too worried about paying a couple of hundred quid. I think the Cartrain pieces were weak in the first place and were only produced for a reaction. Hirst will continue to be the leading contemporary artist in the world today. Cartrain will probably dissapear into nothing following his '15 minutes'. Bored now.

If you read Cartrain's original post, in the light of more recent news, then he has not lied as far as I can tell. If you mis-interpreted that then that is your problem. Ambiguous posts are very common around here after all.
