Cartrain π¬π§ Tate Gallery β’ Damien Hirst β’ Gilbert & George, by low3 on Jul 13, 2009 23:10:10 GMT 1, A greater crime might be to draw something with them.... ;D ;D Sorry Cartrain not personal just could not resist. When you lead with your chin. I actually think this is quite good fun. Publicity stunt or not is actually rather clever. Allready have And Hirst now has 18 days
In all fairness, that's funny! Are we gonna get an hour by hour photo feed of the pencils getting chewed up? Maybe you should make a picture out of the shavings? You'd think that with the ammount of cash he's got though, he'd have something better than those pencils. virgin's blood in a cartridge pen or something.

Cartrain π¬π§ Tate Gallery β’ Damien Hirst β’ Gilbert & George, by stillborncrisps on Jul 14, 2009 14:14:02 GMT 1, Isn't the Pharmacy installation (and thus the pencils) actually owned by the Tate? They bought it from Hirst.
If so this is like stealing a Banksy canvas from Laz's gallery, or a private collector's home, and expecting Banksy to give a shit.

Your most probably correct there The Tate probably do own it . but it would be rather hypercritical of them to complain as they are far from the Whiteness of their sugar cubes Their wealth was established off the back of the slave trade which during the industrial Revelation 1750 - 1850 saw unimaginable profits due to Sugar imports

Cartrain π¬π§ Tate Gallery β’ Damien Hirst β’ Gilbert & George, by cashman on Jul 15, 2009 3:37:38 GMT 1, Its a shame he has nothing better to do than continue to milk the whole Damien Hirst thing, but to be honest we have all seen the stencils he was putting around the place so can see why he has no choice than rip off another artist to attempt to think he's one his self Total disagree with you there Cashman Whilst I thought that some of his early stencils were weak in concept and looked rushed, Beyond the transparent simplicity of these stencils lay artful complexities that i assume was missed on many including yourself as i suspect that the act of going to close to the Street pieces of Banksy resulted in what i can only assume was a violation to the sensitivities of people who held the Banksy pieces up as street Icons and not there for others such as Cartrain to de-flower in such a barbaric manner (Know what i mean GEEZ) ;D
EDIT: ive deleted my post as im trying to avoid being negative

Pencilled in for another row
Cartrain, the 16-year-old Graffiti artist who was last in the news when he got on the wrong side of Damien Hirst for incorporating photographic images of Hirst's skull artwork, For the Love of God, into his graffiti prints. Now he is in danger of getting on the wrong side of Hirst again. Cartrain has, according to his gallerist, "liberated" a packet of rare pencils from Hirst's Pharmacy exhibit at Tate Britain. He pilfered the pencils, intending to replace them with Tesco's pencils but could not find a security-free moment to do so. An act of vandalism, guerrilla art or shameless publicity stunt?

Read it again:
Loans Policy
Tate's extensive programme of loans of works from its Collection to other institutions supports that mission. Through lending, Tate aims to increase public access to the national Collection and to reach new audiences, to contribute to distinctive exhibitions and public programmes in Britain and internationally, to promote British art abroad, to support artists and to foster a spirit of collaboration and exchange between museums and galleries.
Exhibitions Tate lends several hundred works each year to temporary exhibitions in Britain and abroad. All loans are administered centrally at Tate, including any works currently on display at Tate Britain, Tate Modern, Tate Liverpool, Tate St Ives and the Barbara Hepworth Museum, St Ives. To enable Tate to operate a consistent loans policy, The Board of Trustees has decided that loans from Tate should normally be limited to three categories:
1.exhibitions that demonstrate innovative ways of increasing knowledge, understanding and appreciation of art in a wide public; 2.exhibitions that demonstrate original research and that will make a contribution to art-historical or other knowledge; 3.significant one-person exhibitions that enhance knowledge of the work of the artist. Organisers should make a full case for the importance and relevance of the exhibition and why the requested works are sought. Works in fragile, poor, or unstable condition making them unsuitable for display or transport will not be lent. Requests will be considered alongside the requirements of Tate's exhibition and display programme; taking into account the capacity of Tate to deliver its programme as a whole, including its loan commitments.
Touring Exhibitions Only in exceptional circumstances will works be loaned for touring exhibitions consisting of more than four venues.
Long Loans Requests for long loans from the Collection (normally 2-5 years) will be considered from the following categories of borrower:
1.Galleries and museums in Britain where there is a clear purpose or context for the loan of a particular work, especially to complement the borrower's collection; 2.Public buildings in Britain with a strongly justified case for a particular work.
Don't think that covers theft, does it?..
Unless of course you put a request in to the board of trustees, then stood in front of them telling them what you were planning on 'borrowing'. I suppose if you told them it was because you hadn't had any publicity in a while and were thinking of flogging a shit print off the back of this 'crazy stunt' to pay for another month's comics and bags of sweets they might have looked more favourably on it.

Cartrain π¬π§ Tate Gallery β’ Damien Hirst β’ Gilbert & George, by Deleted on Jul 17, 2009 9:48:41 GMT 1, 5 pages on this - right well I haven't read so apologies if i haven't got a clue, those saying he should get arrested etc etc - you are on a goddamn street art forum, half of what is done here is illegal (or possibly once upon a time prior to galleries realising street pieces sold work, but i digress)
secondly did Cartrain actually do anything? If he did, what was the point? Because that part is lost on me....
oh well, have fun creating another 5 pages

though just thinking about that, surely mr plod in charge of graf and shit sees said cartrain (or any "artist") on the wall.. naughty naughty., googles the name, sees he has prints for sale, goes to said gallery, finds the name and address, goes to cartrains house and arrests him for vandalism?
is that me being silly?

Cartrain π¬π§ Tate Gallery β’ Damien Hirst β’ Gilbert & George, by wizzy on Jul 17, 2009 9:54:33 GMT 1, There are worse crimes happening, i wouldnt think the Crown would consider that prosecution would be a worthwhile expenditure or a sure thing, and i suppose Tate dont want any tainted publicity, if it did go to court in some far off dreamland though where nothing more serious happens just remember that the British public always side with the underdog (mostly).
