..not sure that's entirely fair to be honest, pretty sure he's been quoted as saying that the head studies have always been part of his working process. There was a pic from the press release for the last show where he'd broken off from doing a large canvas he was working on to do a charcoal piece on the floor.
Did you go to the last Laz show? I can understand how some mightn't like that direction (I loved it), but I don't think you could criticise him of a lack of inventiveness or creativity at all.
Love the heads, nobody does them like him, no two similar and I never get bored looking at them... Just hope there's something in this show that's affordable

Micallef - A Piece Of Me - NEW SHOW - 9th March, by My Name is Frank on Mar 3, 2012 0:57:14 GMT 1, Same old same old!! from our Anthony, as it says from the ongoing head series, I wonder just how "ongoing " this is going to be, whatever happened to the guy with Imagination, who could transfer that talent and imagination onto paper, oh I know "Lazarides inc, one of the most influential art galleries in the world" got hold of him!!
Talented and utterly wasted at Lazarides, that much we can agree on, but Lazarides are not holding him back. He's one of the real deal amongst this lot, he has a style (albeit Auerbach is put in quite deliberately as a big influence) and deserves the time to develop it, he has come miles in a decade since the Japanese traveller paintings.
The head series are clearly enjoyable for him (it let's him exorcise the fan boy) and they look great, I'm sure for many others too, the imagination has never been in question, he constantly pushes forward within his style and is now reaching a point where you can say 'that's a micallef'. If you are different enough that your work can do that, then you're doing something right

Micallef - A Piece Of Me - NEW SHOW - 9th March, by jusdeep on Mar 3, 2012 10:25:46 GMT 1, I can't believe some of the comments above, but of course everyone has their opinion. I'm not a fan of all Micallef's head studies, but who is? Some work, some not. This is a great opportuntity to get an affordable micallef og. I'm sure after his main show at Rathbone Place this is something he has no need to do and is aimed at his fans who have been priced out of his main body of work. Like with Connor's present show the studies are refreshing and offer insight and rawness which the pollished pieces lack. I for one enjoy looking at them more and find them in some ways more interesting. As for his work with Laz being boring and lacking imagination I totally disagree. There are plenty or artists on their books who fall into this category far more so than Antony. Each of his shows over the years have followed a similar path but have all had different elements and fresh ideas. An artist developes his style over many years, it's very early on in his career and for people to expect a big change in direction or a move out of his comfort zone is laughable. For me his work never ceases to amaze.

Micallef - A Piece Of Me - NEW SHOW - 9th March, by loucastel on Mar 3, 2012 11:46:36 GMT 1, I first came across Micallef's work in 2003, at a small exhibition at Totnes in Devon, a series of original head studies, from then on I seemed to see them constantly, then with the release in 2005 of the edition of 95, and henceforth up to the present time, it just seems that every time he is stuck for an idea, up pop a few more, and no I don't expect a big change in his style or direction, just something which is not, yet another series of head studies. These head studies are like his comfort blanket, as another poster said perhaps he does them to appease his fanboys. There is so much more to the guy than these!!!
I do realise that I am upsetting a lot of the hardcore Mic fans, so to those who neg me instead of having an opinion QQQQ!!
And @ Bram well thought out argument there mate!!!!

Micallef - A Piece Of Me - NEW SHOW - 9th March, by afroken on Mar 3, 2012 12:47:59 GMT 1, Just to add my 2p worth, you've gotta feel for Micallef (although I'm sure his bank manager won't agree); he shifted ยฃ2.5m worth of art in about an hour at Impure Idols and his best work was still to come but then the bottom fell out of his market and everyone was running scared. I think the paintings he did is 2008 / 09, specifically 'f**k Face' and 'The Dreamer' (neither of which are even represented on his website for some reason), were his masterpieces and showed his talent and confidence really exploding. But they didn't sell and they hung around for ages. I can't help feeling that for the Becoming Animal show he retreated to safer territory and produced work with one eye firmly on commercial appeal. He definitely took big strides forward in his show last year but I think that Micallef probably needs to worry less about sales and just let loose if he's to really realize his enormous potential.
Money aside, I do think that being an artist in that situation, and working with a gallery that's so commercially focused (and hangs your unsold work out to dry on their website), can't be easy at all.
This is of course entirely my perception of his progression. At the end of the day, what do I know?
EDIT: Found them...

Absolutely agree mate. Micallef's a figurative painter, self portraits are often how painters work things out and through and on. There's so much personality in the head series, I have no doubt he'll still be painting them when he's 70 +, as all great figurative painters throughout history have. It doesn't show a lack of ideas, quite the opposite, it shows an absolute dedication to them. Whether they're for sale or not is pretty irrelevant. I know I'll regret not picking one up when I could have afforded it. Particularly in 30 years when he's being feted as a great British painter in the tradition of Freud etc. He'll be around long long after this scene as eaten itself.

Micallef - A Piece Of Me - NEW SHOW - 9th March, by jamiet on Mar 3, 2012 18:23:13 GMT 1, I think because we're right at the start of his career it's difficult to clearly see a progression. The new head used to advertise his exhibition looks wholly different to previous ones to me though. i mean we've only been watching him for ten years. The recent documentary on Lucien Freud showed how little work can change in a decade through a painter's career. It may seem a little futile to predict what may happen in 50 years but if i had to take a punt on who would still be around then Micallef would be my pick. i would kill for those brushstrokes. His work never ceases to amaze me.

Micallef - A Piece Of Me - NEW SHOW - 9th March, by adewilliams on Mar 8, 2012 18:13:43 GMT 1, I don't think the world needs any more paintings of Micallefs head. Now spring is here perhaps he might pop outside and paint a tree or something more exciting.
Having said that I will definitely go because he's a bloody good painter. Maybe he needs a muse.
