Sickboy 'Wonder Club' solo show @ White Walls SF , by mouser on Mar 19, 2012 9:09:38 GMT 1, Having spent a few years not being too bothered by sickboys work, this new batch has really come into its own, very very impressibely insane work, looks like modern day Bosch.
The detailed work really suits his style and shows his abilities to the full, consider me converted.

Sickboy 'Wonder Club' solo show @ White Walls SF , by Urban Cowboy on Mar 19, 2012 9:59:06 GMT 1, I have never been a Sickboy fan in the past, I've liked a few of his works but not massively.
These look absolutely incredible though, it's good to see someone produce work of this quality, will be interesting to see where he goes next.
Very talented and great works. Wish I could see the show.

He's defo been pushing the boat out with each show. Goody bags look well worth having!

Sickboy 'Wonder Club' solo show @ White Walls SF , by sand on Mar 19, 2012 14:22:58 GMT 1, It's great to see such positive feedback on the show..i've been closely following Sickboy's work for the last few years and it is amazing how much he has progressed over the last few years.
Sickboy actually cites Bosch as one of the inspirations for his last show. For those who might have missed it - check out the thread on his London show from only 4 months ago:

I'm looking forward to the Sickboy x Eine murals that should start popping up in the coming weeks!

Thanks for posting all the pics/links Sand! I'll definitely pop up to San Fran to check out the work in person. His work is really growing on me.

Sickboy 'Wonder Club' solo show @ White Walls SF , by sand on Mar 20, 2012 14:09:37 GMT 1, Sickboy: Wonder Club
The British street artist on his new San Francisco expo and how London's science museums inspired him
Wonder Club' is an exploration of an artist's dreams. It's a show which allows Sickboy to fuse and explore his wide variety of interests and inspirations, ranging from anatomical studies to comic books and fairytales. The British street artist has been let loose like Charlie in the Chocolate Factory, and at this San Francisco expo you're given a taste of the unique and diverse detailes in his colourful mixed media paintings and installations. 'Wonder Club' is a surreal place where anything is possible, and a club that will make you want to join-up to enjoy the element of intrigue and surprise.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dazed Digital: Tell me about 'Wonder Club'. What is the concept behind this body of work?
Sickboy: It's a show about dreams, about me relaxing my artistic sensibilities and revisiting my childhood to get in touch with a more impulsive creativity. When I was 18, 19 friends and I would paint all night until eight in the morning, then draw in the morning, just make the freshest shit, all drawing on top of each other and being experimental. As you get older and involved with galleries you refine yourself. For this show I wanted to leave that behind a bit. I wanted a more relaxed output.
DD: You explore a lot of ideas in this show, is it fair to say that you are not scared to push the boundaries when it comes to experimenting with topics?
Sickboy: I live in London and there is a whole wealth of nature and science museums. Every week I'd make sure to go to one. Walking through the Hunterian Museum you can see albatross heads, tiny foetuses, some quite dark stuff... all these models made to study anatomy during the renaissance before we properly understood it. It gave me a new idea about how to go about portraits, not just capturing the face but the inner workings of mankind, the complexities of the brain and physical body.
DD: Can you tell me about the intricate anatomical studies?
Sickboy: My artwork has become so much a part of my life that the evolution of my life and what I paint is intertwined to the point that I don't focus on one specific topic or how it will be perceived. I try to keep it all natural. It's all interconnected. Looking at the human body, looking at how we interact, essentially art is created by trying to learn about myself and the world... life is always the focus.
DD: Can you tell me about the 'Artists Refuge'?
Sickboy: I suppose I'm trying to create a resting place. I wanted to have a representation of a personal space with the exhibit. There's a video with Viktor Vauthier that is an essential part of this. I was followed by a photographer for twenty four hours and all of those moments are divulged within the space.
DD: How important is it for you to create an interactive show?
Sickboy: I like to bring my paintings to life, so when you come into the exhibit you can see the painting as a 2D piece, but also see the idea extended into a 3D environment, so I'm not just leaving my vocabulary in the work but making small talk with the viewers.
DD: The press release states the show is 'uncurated' by Eine, what does this mean?
Sickboy: Eine is a close friend from way back and we've always wanted to work together. His affiliation with White Walls allowed that to come together and bring us into a loose collaboration.

Sickboy 'Wonder Club' solo show @ White Walls SF , by firstwords on Mar 22, 2012 14:18:52 GMT 1, Does anyone know if much sold or was this show is a repeat of the previous 3? I don't know if an artist can do much more! The work is consistently first rate IMO. I see Sickboy as a bit of an Isherwood in the 70/80's. His paintings will be hot potatoes in 2040!

Just look on the White Walls website.
www.whitewallssf.com/
Almost everything is still available, which is pretty sad and not great for Sickboy (IMO). Maybe prices are just too high for an unrepresented artist in this economy. Better luck to him next time I guess.

Sickboy 'Wonder Club' solo show @ White Walls SF , by sand on Mar 22, 2012 21:12:14 GMT 1, Why hasn´t the show sold better? It´s a good question!
Sickboy has been tagging walls, decorating wheelie bins and sprucing up walls across the UK and Europe for the last 10+ years. Yet he is relatively unknown in the US. Just take a look on the mainly American forums and he hardly gets a mention let alone his own thread.
So i´m not necessarily surprised about the initial lack of sales as this show was targeted at a new American audience who are hearing about Sickboy for the first time. Even those who have seen Sickboy´s older works are surprised about the quality of the new work. He has progressed massively in the last 5 years. I do wonder how many people simply associate his work with the temple and thus neglect looking at his new work?! Who knows.
He has all the right ingredients to be successful; a long history as a graffiti artist (he´s been painting since he was a teenager and still regularly hits up the streets), long term affiliation with the recognised brand that is POW, respect from peers in the UK street art ´community´, interesting shows with unique installations, the ability to take risks and use new mediums, and a unique + progressive style.
I have a feeling that if he was represented by a gallery like Laz that his shows would get the recognition they deserve. His desire to ´stay free´ from gallery representation has slowed down his rise, but cream always rises to the top.
I truly believe he has the talent to be big, we will just have to wait and see what happens. But I am pretty sure Sickboy won´t be worrying too much about it; from the interviews it seems that he loves to paint and is thinking long term.
About 75% of his last show sold, so his work does sell, just not at a rapid rate.
So whilst the sales for the ´Wonder Club´ show maybe disappointing at the moment, it maybe fairer to see what happens in the next few weeks or months, especially after news and coverage of the show spreads and he starts painting some pieces on the streets in the US.
It still surprises me how much garbage is lapped up on this forum, whilst quality work is overlooked. But I guess it´s good for true fans that can take their time contemplating a purchase.
Who knows, perhaps one day people will be kicking themselves for not picking up a Sickboy canvas or two when they were relatively affordable.
Perhaps the fact that his work is easily available hinders him, after all everybody wants what they can´t have! And there always seems to be this romanticism about American artists in particular, that makes people ignore the talent on their doorstep.
For me Sickboy is one of the most exciting artists from the UK street art ´scene´ and good luck to him. I need another canvas or two!

Sickboy 'Wonder Club' solo show @ White Walls SF , by Coach on Mar 22, 2012 21:55:13 GMT 1, Sand - spot on imo. Sickboy produces some of the best work out there. Your analysis regarding sales is right. No gallery representation, no quick money for the flippers/ebayers, and this means his work isnt hyped like other artists. Cream will rise to the top - and Sickboy is one of the artists around that is fresh and exciting. Whilst I wish him every success, I hope his prices do stay affordable, as I would like to add a canvass to my collection one day. The small piece I do have by him is one of the best things in my collection. On a seperate note, +1 Sand for all the info you have tirelessly provided on this thread - great stuff thanks.

Unfortunately, in the world of art, this is too often not true.
BTW, did you buy a piece and support Sickboy sand? Someone bought Inside my Head 1. Just wondering if it was you.
