Damien Hirst Show at the Tate, by Coach on Apr 8, 2012 0:49:26 GMT 1, There are threads about the new prints, and about the TV shows about it, but I dont think there is a thead about the show itself. Went today, with my kids. I have to say, I think it was spectacular. I had my doubts after the first room - the early works. Not so great. But the rest was great. If you dont like DH's work, you wont like it. But if you do, you will not be disapointed. The scale of the show is impressive. Leave a good 30 mins to queue to see the diamond skull. It is worth seeing for its pompous extravagance. In the flesh, it is a thing of beauty, setting aside revulsion at its cost of production and purported value. I have seen comment that its not worth seeing the rest of the show, if you have seen the TV documentary. Not true. There is so much more to see than what was on the TV show. And what was shown, is much better in real life. The scale of some of the pieces is fantastic. There is a spot painting that is huge - as are many of the other pieces. Unless you hate DH's work, its is definatley worth a visit. But book ahead - the queue for those that hadnt was huge. Nice show catalogue for 20 quid too - lovely! Sure this will be an unpopular view on here - but I thoroughly enjoyed it, as did the kids. First class show! c

Damien Hirst Show at the Tate, by Sundowner on Apr 8, 2012 2:04:35 GMT 1, I also went yesterday and have to agree with coach. As a body of work it really works and whilst not to everyone's taste, shows how Hirst's ideas and his central theme of death has developed over the last 25 years.
"A Thousand Years" still shocks, especially when its original warehouse setting in East London is replaced by the serenity and established surroundings of the Tate (be warned it also hummed a bit yesterday in the heat) and "Black Sun" at first glance looks like a large soft circular cushion on the wall until you get up close. "In & Out of Love" was the highlight for me - still fresh and innovative and made the wife smile. "Sympathy in White Major" and the other butterfly paintings represented as stained glass windows are stunning and are probably the most impressive hangable works of art there.
Lots of branded Hirst goodies in the shop, although not sure how many coloured skulls they are going to sell at £36,000? There are also a range of the Other Criteria signed spot and butterfly prints available for those with deep pockets.
All in all, a really good show but be warned if you are not a Tate member (fortunately I am and got straight in) you will have to queue and yesterday the wait for the paying public was about three hours, plus 25 mins to see For the Love of God.

Damien Hirst Show at the Tate, by rsj on Apr 8, 2012 2:33:13 GMT 1, It is a very well-curated show. It showcases pretty much all his signature works. Highlights for me include the large golden carbinet with diamonds, as well as the "butterflies as stainglass" works. The "The Incomplete Truth" set in front of a white-on-white spot painting was quite special too. The rest of the spot paintings, however, are just as they are, they do absolutely nothing to me.
I went there (twice already) as a Tate member, but I'm not sure how I would feel if I had to pay £15 for it.
The closing date of the exhibition is 9 September 2012 by the way. 24 June refers only to the For the Love of God ("Diamond Skull") exhibition.

Damien Hirst Show at the Tate, by Briggs 74 on Apr 8, 2012 8:06:40 GMT 1, Went early (advisable) on Friday morning with my 3yr old and have to agree with the comments above. It's a great exhibition for kids and pretty entertaining for everyone in general.
I didn't get any of the prints in the shop though!

Damien Hirst Show at the Tate, by pidge on Apr 8, 2012 8:56:58 GMT 1, I went yesterday and really enjoyed it, started to queue for tickets at 4 for the 7.30 showing and were told they were sold out, went online whilst in the queue bought tickets, collected instantly, left and went to turner at the national came back and went straight in at 7.30, no queue no wait.My advice is book online for the time you want, no queue at collection point and you are straight in.
I thought the body of work was amazing and even appreciated his early stuff, liked the coloured boxes....the rest of the show was good too, lots to see well worth a visit.

Damien Hirst Show at the Tate, by Winter on Apr 8, 2012 9:47:00 GMT 1, Also took my kids yesterday. I thought it was hideous in parts and beautiful in other parts, overall I thought it was well worth seeing and my kids really enjoyed it. I didn't queue for the skull as I saw it a few years ago at white cube.

Damien Hirst Show at the Tate, by letiss on Apr 8, 2012 10:30:59 GMT 1, Also went on Friday. The queue was about forty five minutes when we went at 10 am. But then you get a timed ticket, for a a couple of hours later. So we had a very nice brunch in Del Aziz, behenid the Tate while waiting.
The show was great, really top stuff. The highlight for me was seeing the shark which was an amazing centrepiece. Also the last room before the gift shop with the sculture of the angel type figure was very impressive. The only slight negative for me was that there were so many spot paintings. IMO one or two would have been ample. But nevertheless a very enjoyable show.

Damien Hirst Show at the Tate, by Coach on Apr 8, 2012 10:52:17 GMT 1, Stand out piece for me was the dove at the end. I was quite moved by it. I had pre booked tickets over the phone, which meant only a very short queue. I would recommend this. I picked up a few of the small free guide books. If anyone who can't make the show would like one, pm me. I will throw in free postage. Only have a few though.

Damien Hirst Show at the Tate, by Happy Shopper on Apr 8, 2012 14:30:52 GMT 1, Went yesterday too. Was really great to see some of his classic works that weren't part of the Sotherby's auction/show. The shark, Mother and child divided, etc. I really think that until you see some of Hirsts work up close you can't judge it. It really impacts on you. It's pop art, but also quite shocking. The scale, the spectacle... And the smell!

Damien Hirst Show at the Tate, by pezlow on Apr 8, 2012 20:20:05 GMT 1, Planning to go next weekend. Agree with you Happy Shopper that Hirst's work needs to be experienced in the flesh so that more of the senses are working. Leaving aside all the prints and the razzamattazz he definitely has something about him.

Went on Saturday (1.30) but had booked ahead so no need to wait....nasty looking queue to buy on the door though! Queue for " the love of god" was about 20 minutes though

Damien Hirst Show at the Tate, by Finsbury on Apr 9, 2012 19:14:50 GMT 1, Been to the show today and im left both impressed but slightly baffled....i need guidance.... Firstly although i grew up with my best mate who did graff and i once tried to do a dub i have no experience when it comes to a show like this. I have always been a type of fan who looks at something i.e graff, a painting or a sculpture etc and appreiciate the skill in the work, however i have never been to a show where you see a painted cupboard or a desk with an ashtray and can see the art, i really wish i could and this is not a cynical post btw. Surely if you take away the story the artist backs it up with or gives as the explanation it is what it is, a desk and ashtray, a painted cupboard, some painted pans etc. Is the art the explanation, the idea, the piece or both? Please help people show me the light?!!
