Damien Hirst Spot Prints, by mace on Jan 13, 2012 17:56:16 GMT 1, Btw. fuzzyduck "Great way to impress your friends who know sh*t all about art though and have seen a spot painting in a museum once" is not a helpful contribution to the discussion but a clear offence. Ridiculous print. Who wants Sponge Bob on the wall ? Seriously... Mace perhaps review your previous comments on other threads before going out of your way to let me know that my comments arent helpful. At least my comment was made in the context of a larger post rather than your comment on the Kaws print above 2 weeks ago. Now lets be men about this, hush down and allow people to continue to discuss Hirst and Kaws without being petty Move along peeps.
LOL, you got me there. Okay, let's stop this kindergarten and get back to a fair discussion.
PS. but those Sponge Bob prints really suck, don't they ?

Damien Hirst Spot Prints, by jones27 on Jan 13, 2012 18:38:21 GMT 1, Think Im missing something but I went to Other Criteria at lunch time and felt really underwhelmed. A small gallery with about 8 prints on the wall, very snooty staff (a disapproving glance, no hello) and some stuck up old bint in her 70s clutching a rat which barked.

Damien Hirst Spot Prints, by dodomank01 on Jan 13, 2012 18:43:05 GMT 1, i think there is alot of hype/talk surrounding these prints/...why?? because they are cheap?? they are screenprints (most of them) after all, not the high quality and high effort etchings or woodcuts previously released, yet these were/are never mentioned on release?? Why is this, these are much much better and much better value as well IMO... thoughts??

Damien Hirst Spot Prints, by dkla on Jan 13, 2012 19:16:10 GMT 1, You're right, those etchings are fantastic, but they are pretty darn expensive. Not that the screenprints, aren't expensive also, but they are certainly much less than the etchings. The woodcuts are very nice, too. You'll notice a difference in color between those and the screenprinted spots. I guess for me, I just like the look/colors of the screenprinted ones. I have another screenprinted spots print already up on the wall and it looks great.

Damien Hirst Spot Prints, by mmmike on Jan 13, 2012 19:36:59 GMT 1, Great way to impress your friends who know sh*t all about art though and have seen a spot painting in a museum once There is some very real truth to this statement though. I am (although I shouldn't be) a bit shocked at the continued mania here over more spot prints. I like them all right. But they've lost a lot of appeal for me after he's put the spots on everything he could possibly sell. Anyway, I'm surprised their isn't more talk about the Spot Challenge? No one here is going to take the challenge? Basically a way to travel the world for free, as lone as the print is worth a good 2500-3000 Pounds.
What about the time and the hotel costs? I thought about it for about 30 seconds and figured it wasn't near worth it. Maybe if it was a large canvas for free

"Spot" on, though in all honesty it's really beyond me why people are excited about spots after 25 years of production. I guess it's reached the "design classic" phase, much like an Eames chair or Panton lamp, something you always wanted when younger but couldn't afford. Which is fine I guess, just a bit boring IMO

Damien Hirst Spot Prints, by misterx on Jan 13, 2012 20:47:09 GMT 1, Do you get train passes that cover the whole of Europe inc. all Gagosian cities?
I am seriously considering this... The print to be given away to challengers is to be specially made and edition size determinable by the number that finish the challenge... I'm gonna create a thread to pick some brains about the logistics...

It is tempting... And worth it. I wonder if anyone has set off already... I take it only one person can do it?

Damien Hirst Spot Prints, by misterx on Jan 13, 2012 20:57:54 GMT 1, No... Complete the challenge and receive a special edition print. Obviously the less folk complete the challenge so more valuable the print. A few people have three galleries completed but, if the Updates are " live" it seems no one has travelled internationally. If say 20 complete it, what's an edition of 20 worth?

Damien Hirst Spot Prints, by redfred on Jan 13, 2012 21:18:14 GMT 1, I was under the impression it was the first one that completed it that got the print - obviousely not! Not seen any mention regarding the print size, if it is one of the 5" square jobbies is it really worth it?

If it is one per person the i will consider it. Wouldn't want to do it then get nothing.

Damien Hirst Spot Prints, by misterx on Jan 13, 2012 21:23:44 GMT 1, I thought it was "winner takes all" but apparently not, says Gagosian... The print will be made exclusively to challengers, specifically for the competition.

Damien Hirst Spot Prints, by dodomank01 on Jan 13, 2012 22:13:21 GMT 1, i believe this print will be something very special from what i gather from speaking with gagosian, but dont do it for the money do it for the art...remember it will be dedicated to you so as for resale, it maybe limited as not everyone wants a 'thanks to John' printed across their print...

Damien Hirst Spot Prints, by dodomank01 on Jan 13, 2012 22:19:27 GMT 1, Further to this, a signed and dedicated spot print sold for just over £2k recently at auction, think it was Phillips...so i wouldnt go planning a new car with the proceeds just yet...
Why are most links surrounding new prints about the potential resale value and about how much money someone can make by flipping....this challenge is specifically set out for lovers of Damien Hirsts works not about weighing up the costs of doing it against how much you will make at the end by selling the print..does anyone (and i am guilty of this also) actually love art on this Forum or is it all about the money!!!

i would truly love to do this challenge but my wife is 5 months pregnant and i have other issues at present, so its a big NO from her indoors.

Damien Hirst Spot Prints, by misterx on Jan 13, 2012 22:48:06 GMT 1, I didn't read your post before iphoning mine through, so none taken! I am not well off but have always dreamt of a spot, psalm or cathedral print. When this came up I immediately knew what a great storyline to the piece this ewwould be, for approximately the same cost as buying one.. But can I justify the cost when as a family man it seems selfish of me to even consider it! I'm even thinking of this at night as I lie in bed...

Damien Hirst Spot Prints, by misterx on Jan 13, 2012 22:59:58 GMT 1, Not the slightest thought of selling it...but with shallow pockets I have to have peace of mind that it would be worth it financially *sigh* definitely going to start a thread to pick the brains on here,as well as keeping an eye on the Challengers and the no. Of spots they have next to there name for the next few weeks...

Damien Hirst Spot Prints, by manty on Jan 14, 2012 11:11:40 GMT 1, could this be the print? if so its lovely
I don't mean this in a negative way. More a questioning way, and its a question open to everyone that likes these, and not just Volvic who I have quoted
Whats lovely about it?
Is it the layout of the dots? the colours? the shape the layout of the dots make?
When you look at it, what does it say to you?
All I see is a few coloured circular images on a clean white sheet of paper with a massive gap of white around the outside, framed
The only attraction I can see to owning this is the fact that it has a Hirst sig on it, and pretty much everyone that sees it will recognise it as a Hirst, and if thats the reason then I do understand the want for it.
Oh and first one to say its an iconic image gets a LOL from me
Please explain the love for this
Thanks

Damien Hirst Spot Prints, by misterx on Jan 14, 2012 11:30:44 GMT 1, You know, its funny you should say that because I have the exact same thought processes regarding a lot of the work on here that so many people seem to like...to a tee!
You will always have different folk liking different things...I am attracted to brunettes whilst others prefer blondes(the gentlemen)..I dont know why...just am.
Too simplistic?Perhaps.
And for what its worth, not a single friend that I have would recognise one of these as a Hirst, let alone its cost...they would probably be thinking the same as you....coloured spots. Do they have to justify how they feel about them? Of course not. Should I have to justify why I like it? Of course not.
If you don't think its art thats cool...I'm sure if I came round to your place I may also find pieces that you like that have me shaking my head thinking "that aint art...", as i suspect you may be doing right now!!

Damien Hirst Spot Prints, by Happy Shopper on Jan 14, 2012 11:44:34 GMT 1, Beauty is, as they say, in the eye of the beholder. I found new respect for Hirst after seeing his "show" at Sotherby's the other year. Like much art, you have to see these works up close, and as a collection, to "get them".
Can't wait to get down to the Gogosian's in London to take a look at the paintings. And even more looking forward to the show at Tate Modern.

Damien Hirst Spot Prints, by Deleted on Jan 14, 2012 11:56:44 GMT 1, Amazing and yet no attempt at why you like them...
The wonder of Hirsts work for me and these spot pieces at the very centre of that is their illusory nature. They sum up the times we live in, empty, vacuous, beautiful with no meaning attached to them whatsoever. And yet, in that they are quite brilliant Hirst has cultivated this modus over his whole career and these sum it up perfectly.
They are of this time.
Would I buy one? Probably not.
