Please let us know what the Jenny Saville show was like today Coach?

Did you buy a print?

Well, inevitably I'm going to gush a little, as I have already said that Jenny Saville is my favorite living artist.
But the show is just wonderful.
I knew the pieces were big, but some are just imense.
The largest piece in the show is Fulcrum at a staggering 192 by 103 inchhes - that's 16 feet accross!
The work, at that size, works best from a distance. But it is also a privilage to be able to see the paintings up close, to see her methood of painting.
The first room contains large sketches, some with colour. The next two (huge) rooms contain the paintings, and for me they were breathtaking.

The paintings are just what you would expect - disturbing, but you cant stop looking - an artistic rubber necking!
Her use of colour takes what Lucian Freud did with skin tones and flesh to the next level.
I was amazed that this is her first UK solo show - but I think it marks her as a painter of real substance, who will be considered one day as a great painter by art historians.
There you go - I said it would be gushy, but then I am a huge fan.

The print was displayed in the shop (an unumbered but signed version) in a white box frame and did look very good.

I didnt take pics - as I didnt think it was allowed. My lad did though - I will see if I can download them from his iphone (with his help).

I would certainly recommend this show.

Plan your parking ahead though - I did not realise how difficult it is to park in Oxford!

I will qualify:

The reason why artist's produce prints to be sold at the Modern of Art Oxford (as with many similar institutions) is to raise funds for the said museum. Saville isn't a printmaker, but she has very kindly produced and edition in order to financially help the museum who are showing her work.

It's irrelevant how it's printed, the edition is there help the museum and ultimately to please collectors, the vast majority of whom will never be able to own an original work by her. That simple button push has raised over £50,000 for a small and desperately under funded museum. That makes it a pretty good thing in my opinion!

No sign of the print yet, I guess they are doing a full batch as it sold out. I recieved the catalogue last week which I guess doesnt do the scale of the show justice. Really need to visit, would love to see your pics Coach ?

There was an interview evening event last week MA Oxford will put up the recording at some point.

Edit disapointing there wasnt much 'Jewellery Jewellery' in the Jimmy Saville sale .. quality gold trackies mind you.

That's annoying. How large is the label? Depending on the paper, and how it's stored, you might get away with it. Or......you might need to sell it on (framed) in about 6 years.

Is it worth an email to them about it?

I Believe that she is already rated as a significant artist (for want of a better phrase).
Her work is now beyond the means of all but the very rich.
Her show has been reviewed in the broadsheet press, front row on radio 4 etc.
And in my opinion, quite rightly so. She is astonishingly good.

Re: above the print is really great. To be honest I wouldn't have thought twice about the sticker unless Pguru mentioned it. I don't think its incredibly serious but agree not optimal.
Jenny chose not to number the prints on the front by her own aesthetic choice.

They have been for sale since June - so they didnt fly out the window that quickly

There have been 2 print releases. I missed the first one and in speaking to the Oxford Museum they said there maybe a second release to help raise funds as Jenny rarely releases prints.

This lovely new one came up for sale on weds and being a small edition was expected to sell out quickly. I thought they had all gone by Thursday? Are they still available?

Oh bum, I really would have liked one of these. That'll teach me for going on holiday!
