Steve Powers ๐บ๐ธ ESPO โข New York Street Art โข New Release, by Deleted on Jun 14, 2013 21:52:29 GMT 1, Going to have to post this over a couple of posts but it looks like Steve Espo will have two new prints out next Monday will be interested to see what they are, the following is an email from Steve.
Yo Fam,
Since the last time I showed up in your inbox, every hour has been rush hour at ICY Signs. Our shops at 72 Fourth Avenue in Brooklyn and 2819 Girard Avenue in Philly have both been busy making hand painted excellence for classy clientele. And when we're not in the shop, we were traveling and creating art in Marseilles, London, Brussels and Manchester, Tennessee. Every locale offered a unique problem to solve, and so we've been on a sharp learning curve for months.
First, I had the honor and privilege to paint the cover of Philadelphia's constant hit maker Kurt Vile. We painted a wall in the Kensington section of Philadelphia, an area that is close to both of our hearts and a muse for our respective work. Another local titan, Don Argott, directed two great videos capturing the creation of the wall and I think, in the first link, the suicide of a pigeon (at 0:13). In the second video, I extol the virtues of being creative and not smoking crack.
In Brussels, I had a solo show at the Alice Gallery, which gave me a great opportunity to combine latex and spray paint in a new way, and show 60+ Daily Metaltation paintings, plus some new larger works. While I was there, I was interviewed for the Brussels International TV show, and appeared on the cover of Agenda Magazine, which allowed me to return to my earliest art-making roots: doodling on magazine covers.

Steve Powers ๐บ๐ธ ESPO โข New York Street Art โข New Release, by Deleted on Jun 14, 2013 22:00:34 GMT 1, I noticed in the back of Agenda magazine that Kurt Vile was to be featured in the following week's issue, and then learned that Brussels International TV and Agenda are part of the same media corporation. Voila, synergy! Kurt came by the gallery and performed 3 songs and true Philadelphian that he is, showed a lot of brotherly love:
After 3 full weeks of finally being home, we went down to Manchester, Tennessee to paint the plywood perimeter fence for the Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival. Bonnaroo is an art project of incredibly complex proportions, at the heart of it is making sure 85,000 people have a good time. One problem that had bedeviled the organizers for the past 12 years was this fence that stretches across 800 acres. The attendees are encouraged to paint on it, so the results are uneven at best, and at worst an eyesore covered with psychotic teenage graffiti (and this is coming from a big fan of teenage graffiti). We spent a week learning how to letter with an airless power sprayer, which was like trying to write a check with a can of spray paint. Soon though, we were getting some pretty nice results, and we managed to unify this fence into a cohesive message board that contains everything from the Bonnaroovian code (RADIATE POSITIVITY) and my trademark wordplay (LOOK SEE and HEAR SAY) to song lyrics of performers that will appear at the festival (OH YEAH ALL RIGHT TAKE IT EASY BABY etc). The real art will happen during the festival, when the wall gets destroyed with teenage madness and greatness. We'll record the greatness, and after power spraying over the madness, we'll repaint the greatness in elegant 8 foot tall letters. I hope somebody gets to see something they wrote that was an inch tall amplified 100x larger.
