a 1 year old is probably a little too young (maybe bust out the finger paints, and prepare for the biggest mess of your life), but I'd encourage them to make their own art......frame it up and let them be proud of it....kids make some of the most amazing art I've ever seen......their minds haven't accepted the physical limits of their world, and their imaginations have no limits.

I dont think it has to be a childlike image for a child, When i grew up we had one of those fake constables on the dining room wall (good old 80's) with man with hats over their faces sleeping againsed a big pile of straw on (i think) a cart being pulled by horses. I used to look at it for ages.
Kids will stare at a picture for ages trying to work the image out no matter what it is

I'm looking for some ideas on what to buy my new niece for her first christmas present!
Thought some art would be a great idea, as I don't want to buy something that she grows out of or gets bored off. Hopefully something that will inspire her in years to come.
Myself and the wife went into our local gallery in today in Cambridge and came across John Wilson 'Me and my shadow' which in the flesh was brilliant for kids/grown up rooms. I also like Luke chueu's work (not the scary ones)
If you have another ideas that would be great as I know many of you have kids.
