REVOLUTION PER MINUTE - NUART X SAATCHI GALLERY , by Nuart Gallery on Oct 11, 2017 16:02:30 GMT 1,
Nuart presents: Revolutions Per Minute Celebrating 12 years of art on the streets
Exhibition Dates: 28 November 2017 to 7 January 2018 Saatchi Gallery - Prints & Originals Gallery EVENT PAGE
Nuart Gallery and Nuart Festival head to London’s famous Saatchi Gallery this November for an exhibition of prints and originals celebrating 12 years of facilitating art in the streets.
As one form becomes popularised, Nuart facilitate platforms for the next, ensuring they keep well ahead of the curve. From the first wave of stencil art to the current á la mode of figurative muralism; from human scale paste ups to urban interventions; ad busting to out and out art activism, Nuart has strived to build an organisation that reflects the true diversity and strengths of both sanctioned and unsanctioned street art practice. Generally free from both the need and desire to commercialise the culture, Nuart have been fortunate enough to be able to support those more transient and ephemeral ideas and actions that expand Street Art beyond “the wall”, whilst also recognising that not everyone engaged in this culture has the luxury to do so.
Revolutions Per Minute includes an international roster of artists who have participated in Nuart Festival over the last 12 years including the likes of Futura, Martha Cooper and Jamie Reid as well as some of the leading names in new Norwegian art. Showcasing Nuart’s history and standing within the international Street Art community as well as an exciting selection of emerging local talent. Revolutions Per Minute is a celebration of street arts debt to those movements that came before, in particular cultures built around the 12” single, hence the nod to RPM’s and a standardised size of 12” x 12” (30 x 30 cm) for each work.

The Cage "Collection Of The Broken" by Sandra Chevrier, by Nuart Gallery on Sept 12, 2017 11:47:58 GMT 1, After the madness that is Nuart, we collapsed for a nap, and look what we found down the back of the sofa. For a limited time only we’ll be selling the remainder of this unique stock from Sandra Chevrier’s Debut solo show, Le Cage, Collections of the Broken back in Nov 2013.
A high quality offset reproduction print signed and numbered by that super heroine of New Contemporary Art, Sandra Chevrier. And yes, we know it’s “only” a poster, but with signed Warhol and Basquiat posters selling for ten’s of thousands of dollars, it doesn’t pay to be a snob about these things. So there.
We’re taking pre-orders for in-store purchase from now until Friday. Any remaining will be listed for sale online on Friday 15th Sept at 13.00pm.
-> sales@nuartgallery.no for interest

HAND LUGGAGE ONLY! - Group show at Nuart Gallery , by Nuart Gallery on Aug 22, 2017 11:59:32 GMT 1,
12 artists from 10 countries across 4 continents will shortly be descending upon Stavanger to leave their mark for the 17th edition of NUART FESTIVAL. This years festival and academic program will revolve around questions of power in the public sphere. Who has it, how do they wield it, what are the conduits to it and the mechanisms that control it. Is it distributed fairly and what happens when you challenge it ?
As artists will be flying in from around the world, we thought it would be apt to challenge them to start their journey into the theme of power in perhaps the one place we feel the least enabled, the least agency, the least sense of having control. The Airport.
Each artist has been challenged to produce work that will travel in their hand luggage. Work that could be questioned, scanned, justified, quarantined, stripped, bullied, fingerprinted, and ultimately..we hope, released for the show, where it will join work from local artists operating outside of the traditional art-world.
Featuring artworks and objects from Add Fuel (PT), Ampparito (ES), Bahia Shehab (EG), Carrie Reichardt (UK), Ian Strange (AU), John Fekner (US), Know Hope (IL), ±maismenos± (PT), Igor Ponosov (RU), Nina Ghafari (IR/NO), Ricky Lee Gordon (ZA), Slava Ptrk (RU), Vermibus (DE), Wan Ho (CH/NO) and more.
If nothing else, it's a good excuse for a drink to kick off the weekend.

Chevrier x Whatson “Junction” at Nuart Gallery, by Nuart Gallery on Jun 16, 2017 12:56:43 GMT 1,
It gives us great pleasure to announce the return at the Gallery of two art-stars who will team up for an extraordinary collaboration show later this month.
CHEVRIER X WHATSON 'JUNCTION'
Opening night: June the 28th at 19:00 Exhibition dates: June 28th - July 29th
One of the fastest rising stars on the contemporary pop art scene, Sandra’s stellar rise to fame has been as surprising to her as it has obvious to more seasoned art lovers. Since her debut with Reed Projects in 2013 Sandra has gone on to worldwide fame with sell out shows at home and abroad and media coverage to rival that of some of the worlds leading names in contemporary art.
A Nuart favourite and one of Norway’s leading stencil artists, Martin Whatson, cleverly combines the aesthetics of abstract graffiti and stencil art. His work brings together three often disparate aspects of visual culture, that of Classical Fine art, Graffiti and Street Art. Martin merges them together in a manner that is reminiscent of contemporary “mash ups”, but with a finesse and lightness of touch often missing from more activist based stencil work and its musical “mash up” counterpart. His distinctive urban scenes have brought him worldwide acclaim and an international band of fans and followers.
Chevrier x Whatson 'Junction' will feature 8 XL collaborative originals and two runs of 20 XL collaborative prints will be released as part of it.
Both artists will be in attendance, join us for a night of art, drinks and music!
For sales enquiries please contact us at sales@nuartgallery.no

A.K.A.: IT ISN'T JUST A MAN'S GAME!, by Nuart Gallery on May 20, 2017 10:58:45 GMT 1,
A strong young woman and one of the country’s leading female voices in new expressionism, Stavanger based Iranian artist Nina Ghafari leads today's line up for Aka : It Isn't Just a Man's Game!
Nina Ghafari is an Iranian – Norwegian visual artist and street poet, known for rejecting a historical fine art narrative in her paintings, sculptures, assemblages and texts.
She has been instrumental in helping to develop a growing dynamic independent art scene in Stavanger that exists outside of more recognised mainstream culture. Her art practice and productions transcend genres and have previously included curation, music production, fashion, visual art and performance based work. In 2014 her production company NMNP (No money, No problem) staged the much praised multi disciplinary art exhibition and “event” ” Right Time, Wrong City”, an event which brought a growing underground movement of dynamic young artists, thinkers and producers to the City’s attention. Right Time, Wrong City has since become regarded as a ground breaking Exhibition.
Nina Ghafari’s work is a raw and often painful testament to her unfiltered exploration of memory and self through text and image. A self taught artist whose short lived spell at art school showed her that the teaching of “art” for some social classes, was nothing more than an attempt to condition and mute the often brutal realities and associated creativity of those operating outside mainstream culture. In her case, this concerns second generation immigrant outsiders with a passionate need to express themselves. With no anchor into the prevailing culture, Nina Ghafari rejected the teaching of a historical fine art narrative and set out on a journey of her own.
This journey, riotously and violently laid down in a series of paintings, sculptures, assemblages and text, is an expedition that explores and shines a light on the stark realities of operating on the margins of society. It’s at once both passionately introverted and personal whilst at the same time fiercely engaged with highlighting the entrenched inequalities found within our current political and social institutions.
"Her unorthodox approach (and being unorthodox in a sphere of art is not that easy) set in motion a new category of artists – active, away from white cubes, art fairs and Biennales – because pure art is just not enough, it was time for a Raw art!Their work is very often strongly engaged in highlighting the inequalities inside the political and social life. Nina experienced it first hand in her life, communicating that experience in her creations." - Widewalls www.widewalls.ch/artist/nina-ghafari/Nina was a part of the NUART FESTIVAL for several years, as a representative of this new voice on the stage of urban contemporary scene and participated in several exhibitions in Norway and abroad.
In 2015 and 2017, Nina held two important solo exhibition at Nuart Gallery.
AIKO leading today's line up for Aka : It Isn't Just a Man's Game!
One of the most important female street artists from this millennium, AIKO is a Japanese street artist based in NY known for her ability to combine western art-movements and eastern technical artistic skills. A female in a world dominated by omnipresent male figures like Banksy or Shepard Faire, AIKO is an influential figure in contemporary street art, highly respected for her large scale murals that have been installed worldwide.
Already creating art since a young age, her art career in NYC began when she started working for Takashi Murakami. She apprenticed in Murakami’s studio in Brooklyn and worked for him until the late 90′s going on to a direct a digital biography on the artist (“Superflat” 1998).After leaving his studio, she continued to practice her own art and in 2006, when she left the group FAILE, she began a solo career, establishing herself on the street art scene as Lady AIKO.
Acclaimed in the contemporary art world and well-respected within the international graffiti and street art scene, AIKO rarely collaborates, but when she does, it is with a well-known artist, including the famous Lady Pink and Martha Cooper, but also with Banksy for his award-winning documentary "Exit Through the Gift Shop" in 2010. AIKO has also been commissioned to create works in collaboration with Louis Vuitton, Coach, The Standard, W Hotel, Hello Kitty, Isetan and Warner Bros among others.
"Often placed among some other great names of the street art scene, such as Faith47 and MadC, Lady Aiko is not just one of the most famous female artists today, she is undoubtedly one of the most popular artists in the contemporary street art scene." - Widewalls www.widewalls.ch/artist/lady-aiko/A very warm welcome back to Nuart for this street art legend!

Next up is Norwegian leading female street artist HAMA WOODS who is also joining the roster for Aka : It Isn't Just a Man's Game! In search for methods to communicate the importance and revival of nature, and predominantly known for her intricate stencil artworks, Hama Woods is currently based in Oslo and shares a studio with Martin Whatson with whom she collaborates from time to time. Breaking was a big part of her life before she developed an interest in street art. She cut her first stencils in 2009 and is the latest in a new generation of Norwegian artists who have chosen the stencil as their main medium. Hama takes inspiration from popular culture, particularly in offering alternative views on mainstream opinion. Her focus is on the relations between people, and as she says, in generally “an attempt to understand what the fuck we are doing in the world”. Her work intuitively reflects and focuses on a sociological approach to greed and human consumption and demonstrates a reverence for nature and its immediate connection to humanity. Her hope is to empower and challenge viewers to come to their own conclusions and to rethink the choices they make which effect today and tomorrow. On behalf of Nuart Hama Woods has participated in sever projects

Lastly for today, our girl Line Osmundsen!
Line is a Norwegian artist, ex clubber turned painter, best known for her use of sharp geometric forms and female characters. She had her artistic debut in 2014, at Nuart Gallery when she presented herself and her art with an exhibition titled "Beautiful Crazy". The show raised huge amount of interest in her work which has now become very popular.
Line’s characters draw on a large and complex accumulation of influences from both urban club culture and the more sedate country lifestyle they embraced when the music ended and motherhood began. We feel echoes of wild weekends in the sharply rendered, vibrantly coloured shapes that jag at the backdrop of coloured washes. Like sharp memories dissipating and washing at the shore of their past.
A work full of love, life and lust. A Seductive, independent trip with Mother Gaia and her sisters that channels everyone from Egon Schiele to David Choe, Modernism to Graffiti and beyond!

ELLA / Ella & Pitr duo (FR)
Internationally acclaimed French couple Ella & Pitr specialise in creating large-scale murals of fairytale-like characters. Their gigantic characters can be found sprawled across rooftops, runways, houses, shipping containers and even entire fields; each defined by an innate playfulness and a unique style appropriated from influences as diverse as comics and children’s books to graffiti. As well as producing their trademark gigantic murals the world over, Ella & Pitr have exhibited at international art galleries at home and abroad. In 2015, as part of Nuart Festival’s 15th Anniversary celebrations, they created the world's largest outdoor mural in Klepp, Rogaland. Visible from planes flying into and out of Stavanger's Sola airport, it has quickly become a new international landmark.
"When this duo met, Pitr, serious and of dour demeanor, unrepentant tagger and graffiti artist, had been clandestinely hitting the city walls for close to a decade, and wondering where to take things next. One dark and stormy autumnal night, this solitary individual would pack his rucksack with cans and markers, alone, one last time. On that very same night, Ella, a bright and energetic young artist looking for ways to engage a larger audience with her character-driven works, had taken to the streets with bucket and paste and an armful of rolled-up paste-ups. Ella & Pitr were, of course, aware of each other’s work, Saint-Étienne being a relatively small town, but they had yet to meet. That evening, as Pitr was just finishing a mid-sized throw-up with a cheeky ultra-wide tag down an unlit alley, a dog started to bark wildly. Quickly packing his rucksack, pulling his hood over his baseball cap, he quickly moved down the street with a well practiced head-down march. Approaching the corner, he broke into a jog. Several yards down an adjacent street, Ella, dressed in a red and white Polka dot raincoat (with matching hat), had also heard barking, from what she imagined to be a very large and menacing dog. She quickly finished pasting up her work, a hand - coloured illustration of a birthday cake she was going to post for a friend as a surprise. She plonked the brush into the bucket, scooped up the remaining paste-ups, pulled her collar up and her hat down, and sprinted home. Nearing the corner, she instinctively looked over her shoulder, as Pitr, on the other side of the wall, did likewise. Bam! The two crashed into each other at almighty speed, polka dots and paste meeting hoodie and cans in a tangle of arms and legs as they came crashing to the floor together amongst a pile of ruined paste-ups. At that moment, the Prussian-blue clouds parted to reveal a beautiful full moon, beams reflecting incandescently off the glistening street. Laying on their backs, wet and dazed, they looked at each other, then in unison at the moon. “Hey,” said Pitr. “Hi,” said Ella. The rest is history." — Martyn Reed

A.K.A.: IT ISN'T JUST A MAN'S GAME!, by Nuart Gallery on May 18, 2017 12:41:26 GMT 1,
Often aliases, like art, indicate no gender. Gender after all has never been a big issue when it comes to art. But what happens when art gets selected for display? Or when it comes to street art?
Often illegal and interlaced with high-risk activities to produce it, street art still conveys a strong stereotypical male image. And even the most popular street artist, whose identity is still mysterious, has driven home the narrative that street art requires an all-boys club education.
Some artists will agree, some others will not. In some countries certainly being a street artist is a tough game, we all know this. However, when it comes to Western countries, what really matters is recognition.
It is 2017, certainly it took some time, but that time has now come: street art, like every form of art, is no longer a man’s game!
With A.K.A: IT ISN’T JUST A MAN’S GAME! We want to scratch the surface, rebalance the ‘inequalities’ and celebrate the work of some of the great women artists we had the pleasure to work with over the years. We hope you will see them as Artist and not just as ‘women artist’, and love their work as much as we do.

OPENING NIGHT: Wednesday, May the 24th at 19:00 EXHIBITION DATES: May 24th - June 24th Nuart Gallery, Salvågergata 10, 4006 Stavanger (NO)
