Mr Brainwash Prints to Increase in value?, by adam on Aug 11, 2010 23:58:45 GMT 1, My Legend (pink) was purchased in the secondary market a year ago for $175. last week someone offered me $1300 for it. It's one of my favorite prints. I can't let it go.
I have a green one I would sell for that if he is interested still. I was lucky enough to get 2 but the brown one is framed and won't be sold.
cheers

Eine - what is the appeal?, by adam on Mar 24, 2010 17:59:45 GMT 1,
See I appreciate the impact of the big pieces on walls, very striking and effective although I get a but with artists who say their work says nothing but just attempts to raise questions
anyhow took a look at that nelly duff site and decided the prints still do nothing for me, the warhols just look spooky, home sweet home would be embarrassing to have on my wall and the eltons look quite pretty at least, although I find little merit in them (other than hanging them in my daughters room to help her learn the alphabet)
Ho hum, well thanks for the interesting views and links - just one to put in the "not for me" bucket

Eine - what is the appeal?, by adam on Mar 23, 2010 23:06:34 GMT 1, agreed sir
- nope, where is that location? he just says on a bridge
- agree, nothing else necessarily required on a large scale like that, I don't yet find that appeal translating into a much smaller print I guess
- do you own any of his works?
thanks again for the input

Eine - what is the appeal?, by adam on Mar 23, 2010 22:28:02 GMT 1, Interesting thoughts spirit and that makes a lot of sense, although doesn't make me warm to the art as I find tags to be nothing more than vandalism that gives a bad name to talented graffiti artists. Videos are also illuminating (thanks Silky although my German is a bit rusty) - so Eine in his own words has no message and nothing to say. And SCARY was ironic because people find graffiti scary? Does not really resonate with me as I don't find it in the least bit scary - 90% annoying / 10% creative IMHO. I thought the collage on the building looked very good though - colourful and striking, but again with no depth or consequence. I shall research more of his stuff though as I am still curious whether it has any merits other than simplicity and colour. I think it is effective on a large wall but still fail to see the apeal of paying ยฃ350 for the word Hell on black paper on my wall
thanks to both again for the unjudgemental responses and further education

Eine - what is the appeal?, by adam on Mar 23, 2010 16:16:42 GMT 1, This is a genuine question not a troll so appreciate it if you take it in the spirit intended...
I know Eine is well-respected and collectable, and that defining the pleasure of art is personal and sometime impossible but I am genuinely baffled by the appeal of his art. I consider myself to be fairly broad-minded and open to new concepts and I am an appreciator of many of the street artists on here but I found myself wondering why someone would frame eg a large letter E on their wall. Maybe they look better in sets or combinations?
While his art is certainly not offensive to my eye (hey he creates some nice fonts that make sense for publishing etc) but can you Eine fans describe what you like about it and the message, if any, you derive from it? Just wondering what I am missing.
Thanks, and once again this is not a criticism of the artist, more of my own critical faculties. I am genuinely interested in understandnig the appeal to those who buy and collect his art.

Mr. Brainwash โข Liberty Print, by adam on Mar 11, 2010 16:47:24 GMT 1, Well said silky and raiden - do people sit waiting for a new MBW thread so they can spew some more playground vitriol? Some art I buy because I admire it, some purely for the way it looks - I own some Banksys and some MBW. Not many would argue MBW has Banksy's talent or imagination - I certainly would not. However I recent sold a Trolleys and its wall sapce will go to a Legend that I have been meaning to frame ever since I bought it. I just never grew to like the trolleys image, despite it's witty message on consumerism/commercialism.
I recall an early MBW thread where critics were saying if he stuff was really sought after, the prints would sell out and loads of flippers would appear on eBay - well that has happened and values of his older work seem to be rising too. Yet still people come here to slag off.
Why not just accept you don't like MBW's work and stick to other forums? Life is too short to be so negative.

Mr Brainwash Mondrian Charity Print, by adam on Jan 19, 2010 12:05:08 GMT 1, www.mrbrainwash.com/buy/piet.html
Part of sale proceeds go to Haiti but this is really lazy, take a famous Mondrian artwork and splash some paint in the corner.
I don't have time for much of the snobbishness on here towards MBW, although understandable given the Banksy roots of the site. Other than a few Banksy prints I have pitched in for, I buy art based on visual appreciation or liking something a bit different rather than whether its completely original or the artist is a nice bloke.
A lot of MBW is unoriginal but a lot of art is; I think banksy is certainly more creative and skillful (and expensive!) but I am not blinded by him - did not think all that much of trolleys and Nola for example. MBW is often criticized for simply taking an existing image and splashing some paint over it but to me prints like Applause or Morons are no different - take photo, add slogan. I think both of those are great prints though because of their visual attraction and impact.
So I have some MBW prints, some of the earlier stuff eg cans/33rd street/biggie but also Legends, Max spray and the (excellent IMHO) Chaplin one.
Anyway I am rambling - the new MBW is quite appealing visually (esp. the gold/silver which are over-priced) but is too obvious a rip-off and too lazy for my taste.
So not for me this time round - so curious what other MBW fans (or at least neutral observers) think of this one? Replies saying MBW is sh*t are inevitable but of less interest!

Andipa Gallery - Banksy Show - 23rd April 2009, by adam on May 21, 2009 16:48:44 GMT 1, I went to this and was impressed by the selection, I picked up a catalogue and had a chat with the owner. He said the canvases were starting at ยฃ40k and most of them were owned by him! The Hopper Nighthawks pastiche was huge - about 10ft long, I asked how much - ยฃ1m !?!?!? Had not been sold yet (last day of show) and he said this one was being sold on behalf of a client.
Question for you experts - does banksy do one-off commissions? I thought not and my suspicion was that banksy was the "client" and he was trying to cash in and make a tidy sum a la Damien Hirst (and fair play to him of he is)

Weapons of Mass Distraction - stamps, by adam on May 9, 2007 16:59:48 GMT 1, Hi
What does everyone think these are worth and how rare are they?
Its a postcard-sized piece of 16 identical perforated stamps. Each stamp is the Queen with a gasmask on with red background.
Title at the bottom is "Weapons of Mass Distraction - banksy.co.uk"
Thanks

Banksy ยฃ10 โข Di-Faced Tenner, by adam on May 9, 2007 17:03:43 GMT 1, Re. the single card Di-faced tenners sold for ยฃ10 back in 2004.
They currently seem to be going for ยฃ225 - ยฃ300 on ebay. I have just bought one and it came with a letter of authenticity from TomTom. I wondered whether there are fakes about and how to tell the real from the fake.
Thanks
