apparently the father passed two years back.. and now the sisters are in charge of much of the estate. Surely the new print and other licensing is driven by the sisters at this point. not saying that is good or bad.. but... well.. i'll not comment more at this time

I was approaching this as thinking the show its self was overall very successful. The reviewer could argue you can have an overall successful show with what he perceives to be art that is not all that interesting. Monsoonking has a point - i dont go see FAILE work to see deeply into anything really......... i just think its F'ing cool. maybe i am overly simplistic in my art critiques
brainwash seems to have the same impact on this board... people talk down the art but he keeps having successful shows. i guess overall that makes brainwash quite successful.

but anyway , for discussion: a few key points for me:
1. "In recent decades, artists like Mike Kelley and Jim Shaw have fruitfully excavated the weird, dark side of adolescent consciousness"
he starts the article by basically talking up two other artists. seems odd.
2. "the more thought-provoking possibilities inherent in the topic of modern youth evade them"
really? i saw a whole lot of youth there in an otherwise mostly empty museum of art. in fact i saw youth literally speed walking through other galleries to get to the FAILE exhibit. and the writer apparently has vast knowledge of the "thought-provoking possibilities inherent in the topic of modern youth" .. but doesnt share them or explain exactly how his possibilities don't correspond with the possibilities that FAILE shows in their art.
3. The word Faile is a rearrangement of letters spelling โa life,โ but thereโs not a lot of real life in the duoโs work.
This is just an unnecessary and petty type of take down that isnt appropriate and clouds everything else he has to say. what possible objectivity can happen at this point ?

So, at this point i dont think it is a real critique. he doesnt think there is any life in the work. etc, etc.
I dont see it as very much of an art review .. this is just an opinion piece and this guy doesnt like the art.
he could have say balanced this by pointing out that the museum show was very well attended, had a special Q&A session with the artists that was well attended and streamed online. maybe pointed out some #'s about attendance.. or a quote from the gallery about whether the show had been well received, etc, etc.
4. regarding the times square effort - "it has a certain quaint, old-fashioned appeal, which is about the nicest thing you can say for it."
really. that is the nicest thing you can say about it? again, i just dont understand
overall, i dont see anything in the review that really expresses any pleasure derived from the show. even the kids playing games are mindless and unaware. and yet. they are there. in a museum. which is a win for everyone possibly?
i think its great if people think this was a great review. i suppose like art - we all take away something very different.
i had just been to the show and was pretty pumped about it .. and then read this review.. and it was a total let down.
maybe he could have at least ended with " But if you like this type of thing .. please go support the museum and take a look around" ?? it seems to me that someone on the fence of going would read this and intentionally stay away . and that is unfortunate.

In that I went to the Brooklyn Museum show and have followed FAILE for many years I admit i was a little interested to see what a NYT reviewer might say. I suppose I shouldn't be surprised at the high minded take down the reviewer does on the FAILE installation - and for good measure he had to pan the prayer wheel effort in Times Square.
I was really a bit sad about the review at first... and then I remembered that one reason i started buying street/urban art years ago was to get away from pencil pushing people that critiqued and put down everything they didnt quite think was up to their lofty standards.

I saw literally hundreds of kid through teenage through adult people in the exhibit while i was there.. If the number of photographs being taken was any indication ..... the work is connecting to people in ways this reviewer doesnt quite get. Sadly .. this reviewer has the mouth piece of the NYT at his disposal.

NOTE: they were charging $20 for catalogs at the show.. which i though a littl odd myself.. but .. it is what it is..

First time seeing many pieces in person. Sure the prices were high .. It's a gallery in NYC I don't think you go there looking for bargains! From what I heard they were getting plenty of buyers so who knows what the right prices are anymore ..

Mermaid Challenger 2007 Get Acquainted with a Faile Girl - this is a one off on paper - loads of bright colours and stuff. 2007 Ganesha on wood - this piece was commissioned in 2007 If I could figure out how to post pictures I would. The print market for FAILE is really hit and miss in my opinion. Depends on the image and a bit of luck to get high prices. range: $900 - $2000 seems to be the market for most of the older prints. big range i know. Only the bigger low run pieces get in the $2,000 - $5,000 range. Happens Every Day, butterfly girl, and a few others hit that range periodically I think. That Mermaid Challenger may get you into that range.. ? Check the forum help section for posting pictures. basically you need to open an account in a photo sharing site like photobucket - upload the photos there- and then you put the link tot he photo in your post.
i personally would be interested in the original on wood if you get some pictures, size, etc..

And the rat is carrying a radio .. tying in the music side ? am I thinking too much on this. it actually makes me like it more to consider this interpretation..

Now even though i dont want to sell i have sent in a few requests .. and nothing.. for many months.. and being in USA and having had some issues with international shipping.. unframing, packaging, and shipping to london, waiting months, packaging and shipping back to USA.. not really worth the risk?! I feel pretty stuck by the whole process... and periodically you see other people say they got COA's in a matter of days.. what is the secret!!?!?

1. it sells at auction in 10 years for $25,000 .. spending an extra $1500 today will not be the thing you remember most. 2. it sells at auction in 10 years for $1,500 because the interest in this generations art is waning.. you also really wont care if you spent $5000 or $6500 .. it will hurt equally either way to take it off the wall , box it up, and sell it on knowing that basically it didnt pan out.
The future, is very , very hard to predict.. and i guess my point is.. if you like it .. in either scenerio it doesnt matter all that much what you pay for it. (assuming you have enough money to eat and cover all the other things in life).

1. it sells at auction in 10 years for $25,000 .. spending an extra $1500 today will not be the thing you remember most. 2. it sells at auction in 10 years for $1,500 because the interest in this generations art is waning.. you also really wont care if you spent $5000 or $6500 .. it will hurt equally either way to take it off the wall , box it up, and sell it on knowing that basically it didnt pan out.
The future, is very , very hard to predict.. and i guess my point is.. if you like it .. in either scenerio it doesnt matter all that much what you pay for it. (assuming you have enough money to eat and cover all the other things in life).

Better investment Kaws, Koons or Banksy?, by daveart on Aug 17, 2015 15:22:20 GMT 1, some posts about Murakami - i started buying DOB pieces really early on.. and then .. Murakami just keeps cranking those babies out. If he had stopped at a few .. 3 or 4 versions maybe. Those might be 10K editions now. but when you are pretty sure he is going to keep releasing basically the same thing with different color variations - at roughly the same starting price - then why would you bid up the previous versions ? you have to really be a fan to value something higher just because it is older. same DOB... same flowers, same same. there are plenty of fans to scoop them up .. but not near the demand needed to make the price rise.
Hirst = same thing. If he came out tomorrow and said "we will NEVER make another spot edition or another butterfly or put another xyz in a tank" KA BOOM. the market would go crazy. too much supply that is basically indistinguishable from the other supply.
anyway, i hate to go all supply and demand on an art forum but the #1 reason in my opinion Banksy prints hit the prices they are now is supply being low. and there is no guarantee there will not be future supply (as stated above).

1. would you/could you personally build your Banksy collection again at TODAY's prices. <NO, AND NO and Hell NO> 2. if you hit it big and have the mega house /office/ whatever. would you really hang a Banksy as your center piece? um. no and no again. you are going to move on to something that 1. doesnt look street in your beautiful non street house/office. 2. something your wife/girlfriend actually likes. 3. As others have said Banksy is such an unknown wild card. say he runs out of cash - decides he needs a few more ferrari's ..whatever. and starts dropping a print run of 300 every few months like Fairey ..and look out below.
i am not selling the ones i have .. but would i 'invest' at this price point ? NO
That said. if you love it .. and you buy an unsigned print for 5K .. and five years on its selling at 2.5K .. who cares. as long as you love it. i have certainly bought stocks that lost half their value in five years and it hurts but you move on.
